Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I am pleased to invite you to attend the 9th edition of the Mediterranean Cardiology Meeting (MCM), April 13 - 15, 2019 in Catania (Italy).

Over 1500 participants took part in the last edition with strong international attendance, which confirmed the high interest aroused by this biannual event.

An outstanding Faculty, selected from the leading experts on these fields, will provide the highest quality training, through innovative interactive programs and happenings; joint sessions will be organized with the contribution of: American College of Cardiology, Chapters of the American College of Cardiology, Scientific Societies of Cardiology and General Medicine.

Thanks to multidisciplinary Courses, Symposia, Debates on Controversial Topics, Clinical Tutorials, Luncheon Panels, Focus on, Meet-the-Expert Sessions, Interactive Case Reviews, Interactive Sessions, Intercultural Exchanges, Abstract and Poster Sessions, the meeting will investigate the current state and the prospective developments for the treatment of: Atrial Fibrillation, Sudden Cardiac Death, Heart Failure, Acute Coronary Syndromes, Global Cardiovascular Prevention, Arterial Hypertension, Pharmacological Therapy, Syncope, Congenital Heart Disease, Cardiac Monitoring Technologies and Genetics.

A major innovation is represented by the CARDIOCONTEST sessions, where the use of Virtual Clinical simulators will allow attendees to practise and improve their clinical skills, in order to deal with a wide range of cardiac problems.

Cardiologists, internists, ER physicians, general practitioners, nurses and healthcare technicians with a keen interest in the whole management process of heart diseases will be able to find a knowledge-intensive program, as MCM has been providing for years a valuable opportunity for an update on Clinical and Interventional Cardiology.

Catania, as one of the most famous historical and cultural locations in the whole Mediterranean area, is the ideal setting for this meeting. It is a particularly lively and fascinating town, rich in marvellous examples of typically Sicilian baroque style, as well as one of the main economic and educational centres in the island, and a key hub of the technological industry. This beautiful city, full of colours, fragrances and flavours, is suspended between the deep blue of the Ionian Sea and the majestic shape of Etna volcano, which dominates the town from afar.

Looking forward to meeting you in Catania, sincerely

Michele M. Gulizia, MD, FACC, FESCMediterranean Cardiology Meeting President

GREAT NEWS CARDIOCONTEST

Deal a clinical case with your team!

“CARDIOCONTEST” is innovative and engaging activity, where health cardiologists can demonstrate competence and decision-making ability, solving various interactive clinical cases in real time. For this activity will be used the interactive table Body Interact and the innovative high-fidelity simulation system “CLINICA”, also adopted by the AHA and ACC for their training activities. In total 6 training sessions are planned spread over three days of activities. Each session will take place in Etna room set up properly and will involve a group of 5 participants who will have to solve one or more clinical cases using the interactive table Body Interact, placed in the hall stage; a considerable LEDWALL at the front of the room allows the audience to view the Body Interact activities; a remote voting system based on I-pad permit to the audience to help and to interact with the 5 participants. The groups will be trained before the event, on a voluntary basis; each group will have to solve a different clinical case, for a total of 6 clinical cases for each days. During the resolution of the case, the group may ask for support to the audience, by making up to 3 questions whose answer must be YES or NO; audience can express their choice using the dedicated remote voting system. The time limit to solve the case is 20 minutes. The team that successfully solves the clinical case will receive a certificate of competence for that session.

Vi.P (Virtual Patient) ECHO SessionDuring which will be used a latest generation echographic simulator. To explain, the echographic simulator, both for TTE (trans-thoracic) and TEE (trans-esophageal), allows to simulate Echo-oriented operations procedure. The learning method will be extremely educational oriented and through advance and realistic simulator, will gives essential theoretical basics and an appropriate practical and clinical knowledge. Individual skilling exercise for jugular, subclavian and femoral ECHO-oriented vein puncture and more exercises on Tissue Model mankin, anterograde and retrograde tunnelling of central venous catheter, will take place and performed during all the session.

2019Catania & Congress Venue

Catania is undoubtely one of the most important cities in the whole Mediterranean area, both in terms of cultural and historical point of view. It is one of the few cities in Italy that offers a variety of landscapes.condensed in one site. Located on the east coast of Sicily (which represents the metropolitan area with the highest population density), Catania has ancient origins since its foundation dates back to 729 BC. During its history Catania has been a constant point of reference for the entire Mediterranean area, especially from an artistic and cultural point of view: it is here that in 1434 the oldest university of Sicily was founded. The remains of several ruins still enrich the heritage of the town and surrounding areas, despite Catania was repeatedly destroyed by violent volcanic eruptions caused by the Etna volcano (the most impressive occurred in 1669) and by devastating earthquakes (the more catastrophic one occurred in 1693). It is from this tragic event that the city and its people were able to get up in a truly unique and admirable way. A work of reconstruction with few equals in the world led to the blossoming of the famous “Sicilian Baroque” style of architecture that identifies more than any other the fantasy, the imaginative power and the passion for beauty of Catania and its inhabitants. Therefore in 2006 the splendid baroque center of Catania became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with seven towns of the Val di Noto, Sicily. Today, Catania is a city full of colors, scents and flavors - a lively and surprising, suspended between the magic of the blue Ionian Sea and the imposing outline of Etna volcano and often snowy, which dominates the city from above.

Four Points by Sheraton Catania Hotel & Conference CenterJust few minutes from the historic center of Catania, the Sheraton Hotel offers high level of hospitality with a wide range of business and spare time facilities. The Sheraton Catania is one of the largest conference centers in eastern Sicily, with an area of 724 square meters in 6 modular meeting rooms of different sizes and acoustically isolated. All the 162 rooms and 7 suites - walking through a panoramic elevator - are characterized by colors that come into perfect harmony with the landscape of the Mediterranean area. Each room is equipped with all facilities and comforts offering the highest standards of quality and safety. The conference area, personalized for the Mediterranean Cardiology Meeting 2019, provides a great learning experience in an extremely pleasant and comfortable site.

PRACTICALINFORMATION

BY SHIPWant to reach Catania by sea? From Northern Europe and Italy, comfortable Tirrenia ships leave the Genoa port and

reach Palermo in about 17/18 hours. But there are also frequent ferries from Naples to Milazzo (about two-hours drive to Catania), and even a daily one from Ravenna (on the Northern Adriatic coast) directly to Catania. Speedboats and catamarans from Malta to Catania are also available on a daily basis.Catania Port Authority Via Dusmet - Tel. 095 535888 / 536031Harbour Office Via Dusmet - Tel. 095 531667 Fax 095 533962AMT Alibus service from the port to the airport every 20 minutes.

BY CARBoth Sicily and Catania can be reached by car form the main Italian cities through an exhaustive highways’ network

(green road signs). From Northern Italy, you can drive along the highway A1 through Naples to Salerno; from Salerno (Amalfi Riviera and Capri area) take the A3 highway (free of charge) towards Reggio Calabria. Exit at VILLA S.GIOVANNI-SICILIA to get to the harbour where very frequent ferries connect the mainland to Sicily (namely to the city of Messina), 24 hours a day. From Messina, take the A18 highway to Catania: an hour drive and you’ll arrive there. If you come from Palermo, take the A20 highway to Messina, then the A18 highway to Catania exit.

HOW TO REACH CATANIACatania is easily reachable by any means of transport - fitting any traveller’s budget from all over the world.

BY PLANECatania Fontanarossa International Airport is perfectly located in the outskirts of the city: a bus service (AMT ALIBUS

- toll free number: 800 018696) provides the best connection - every 20 minutes, from 5.00 am to midnight - between the airport and the City Centre and/or the railway station and vice versa, at metropolitan bus fares.Taxis for and from the airport are always available on site, or at the following numbers:Radiotaxi 24h Ph. +39 095 330966 Moreover, there are several suburban bus lines offering connections between small towns and villages of the Catania area and the airport.Siciliy’s other main airport, Palermo Punta Raisi, isn’t actually the best choice to reach Catania by plane: it takes about 3 hours (and a 210-km drive) to get from Palermo to Catania, first on the A20 highway and then on the A18 one.

BY TRAINCatania is perfectly connected with the rest of Sicily and with the biggest Italian cities by train, too, thanks to the

deluxe Eurostar trains to the more common - but very efficient - Espresso, normally departing from Milan, Turin and Rome and passing through Naples and the Amalfi Riviera.Catania Railway Station - www.trenitalia.it Piazza Giovanni XXIII - Catania - Tel. +39 095 532226Call Center Tel. 892021Switchboard Tel. 095 532710Ticket Office Tel. 095 532227
