SUMMER EDITION Issue #1 1 TANGLES: A CUT ABOVE THE REST! JUNE 21, 2014 No season is more appreciated than summer once it finally arrives. This year, that seems especially true! While we love the summer weather and activities that come with it, sometimes our hair can suffer in the humidity and sun. In the summer months, we tend to forget about our hair or simply aren’t aware of the issues that can become quickly problematic. This article can help you tackle some of the problems our hair falls victim to such as colour fading, damage, build up, and frizz. Colour Fading 1. Be sure you’re using a UV protective shampoo. Many department store shampoos and conditioners don’t protect your hair against UV rays. Your hair, like your skin, can become damaged by the sun’s rays. It’s important to defend against such damage. As the sun penetrates the hair it also causes fading of your rich colour! One line to consider for the summer months is Redken’s Colour Extend line. The range of products will help your colour stay rich and vibrant between visits to the salon! 2. Deep conditioning can be a colour saver. Using a deep conditioning treatment on a weekly basis in the summer takes only 15-30 minutes out of your day. It will leave your hair feeling silky, add shine, but most importantly, it will ensure that the cuticle (outermost layer of your hair) is closed and sealed so that your colour can’t escape! 3. Consider lightening up. Ask your stylist about adding a few lighter highlights. Lighter shades can help hide fading colour and even extend the time between colours by hiding the appearance of regrowth. Even a shade or two lighter can make maintenance in the summer months simpler for both you and your stylist!

TANGLES: A CUT ABOVE THE REST! JUNE 21, 2014

No season is more appreciated than summer once it finally arrives.

Colour Fading

1. Be sure you’re using a UV protective shampoo.

Many department store shampoos and

conditioners don’t protect your hair against UV

rays. Your hair, like your skin, can become

damaged by the sun’s rays. It’s important to

defend against such damage. As the sun

penetrates the hair it also causes fading of your

rich colour! One line to consider for the summer

months is Redken’s Colour Extend line. The

range of products

will help your

colour stay rich and

vibrant between

visits to the salon!

2. Deep conditioning

can be a colour

saver. Using a deep

conditioning treatment on a weekly basis in the

summer takes only 15-30 minutes out of your

day. It will leave your hair feeling silky, add

shine, but most importantly, it will ensure that

the cuticle (outermost layer of your hair) is

closed and sealed so that your colour can’t

escape!

3. Consider lightening up. Ask your stylist about

adding a few lighter highlights. Lighter shades

can help hide fading colour and even extend the

time between colours by hiding the appearance

of regrowth. Even a shade or two lighter can

make maintenance in the summer months

simpler for both you and your stylist!

Chlorine Build-up

1. A weekly

clarifying

shampoo is

key! We all

love the pool

on those hot

summer days!

Unfortunately, the chlorine and other chemicals

can cause damage. Redken’s Hair Cleansing

Cream helps to remove all sorts of build-up from

mineral and hard water to chlorine. Using a

clarifier can protect your hair from harsh build-

up and help prevent breakage through the

summer!

2. Condition your hair before you swim. Putting

conditioner in your hair before getting in the

pool or lake helps to protect the hair from

damaging debris or chemicals. While the

conditioner will rinse out in the water after a

little while, it will give you a window of defence.

If you’re an avid swimmer who wears a swim

cap, coating your hair with a liberal amount of

conditioner can make removing the cap much

easier and pain-free when you’re done your laps!

3. Rinse right after swimming. A heavily

chlorinated pool means you should rinse your

hair immediately after you get out. This helps

close the cuticle of the hair again to protect

against environmental damage. Once the smell

of chlorine is gone from your hair while you’re

rinsing, you can get back to your favorite

summer activities!

4. Comb gently! Chlorine opens the cuticle of the

hair and settles inside which is why it’s so

stubborn to remove! It also makes the hair very

brittle and can dry it out. Be sure to be extra

careful when detangling after you’ve been in the

pool. Begin combing from the ends of your hair

with a wide-tooth comb and work your way up

to your scalp to prevent tearing and ripping the

hair. This will prevent large knots and pulling

pains as well!

Dry Hair and Split Ends

1. Here, moisture is key! The Redken Extreme line

is sure to be

your best

friend in the

hot season.

Extreme Anti-

snap leave-in

treatment can

be left on

throughout the

day to guarantee that your hair doesn’t get too

dried out.

2. You can try oils such as Orofluido on the ends to

help lock in moisture and prevent future split

ends. Your stylist will know which oil is best for

you and whether or not it will weigh your type of

hair down.

3. Be sure you’re getting a regular trim.

Sometimes it’s hard to find the time in the

summer to make an appointment with your

stylist, but it’s important! Getting a trim every 4-

6 or 6-8 weeks (depending on how your hair

grows) is the only remedy for split ends once

they’ve started. Products that claim to ‘heal’ split

ends aren’t reversing the damage; unfortunately,

nothing helps the end once it is split, the only

solution is to cut it off. Popping in for a regular

trim means that your stylist won’t have to take

off more length than is needed.

4. Try using cold air when you blowdry. Chances

are, your blowdryer has a ‘cool air’ setting that

you never use! Always using the hot air from

your blowdryer can dry out your hair and cause

it to become brittle and damaged. The cool air

setting may take a few moments longer than the

hot, but it can save your hair from drying out.

And in the summer, a shot of cool air can be

refreshing!

Humidity Woes

1. Smoothing or hydrating shampoos and

conditioners will keep

your hair manageable

and help to fight

against frizz.

2. Anti-humectant

products such as

Redken’s Two Smooth

or Align help to repel

humidity

from opening the cuticle of the hair which causes

excess frizziness. These product types keep

unmanageable frizz to a minimum!

3. Make sure your hair is dry. Having your hair

100% dry means humidity has a harder time

getting into the hair. When hair is damp, the

cuticle of your hair is still slightly open and

stepping into humid conditions means your hair

will continue to absorb the moisture that’s in the

air causing that puffed-up look. If your hair is dry,

the cuticle of the hair is closed, sitting flat, and

protecting against unwanted moisture collection.

4. Cool down! If you flatiron your hair, be sure it

has cooled completely otherwise, your hair will

react to the humidity and your hard work will be

for nothing. Hair is still malleable from heat for

several minutes after you’re finished with the

section; so, confirming that it is completely cool

will assure your straight hair stays throughout

the day!

Follow some of these tips and tricks and your hair will remain gorgeous all throughout the summer! Remember, everyone’s hair is different: you and your stylist are the ones who know it best so consult your stylist if you’re having issues. They will help sort out any problems you’re having and keep your hair perfect throughout the summer and every other season!

Earlier this month, the team at Tangles Hair Designs participated in the Hike for Hospice run by Wellington

Hospice. Wellington Hospice has been providing for the community since 1980. They are a charity network that is heavily volunteer supported and Tangles Hair Designs wanted to help in their great cause and effort. We set up a small donation jar in the salon and we want to thank each and every one of you who generously donated.

Altogether we raised over $300.00 for the Hike for Hospice!

The team made it out to the Ignatius Jesuit Center around 10:00am on Sunday, June 1st. We were clad in our Hospice Wellington t-shirts and ready to hike! There were three main hikes that participants could take part in. The 5K; for the seasoned veteran, the 3K; for the enthusiastic novice, and the historical walk; for the casual stroller. The event was a great get together for all ages and the warm feel of the occasion was highlighted by the fact that we all enjoyed getting involved in our community!

The hike had a number of different events ongoing for the 10th anniversary of Hospice Wellington. Cake was served, faces were painted, caricatures were drawn and raffles were chosen from! The lively music kept us all in a great mood and the Hospice Team had a number of other events planned for the day.

Kevin Kelly of Guelph’s radio station, Magic 106.1, was the master of ceremonies for the event and what a terrific job he did. A community weave was held in honour of loved

ones passed and this truly let the community spirit of Guelph shine. As well, hikers saw a burning ceremony of last year’s community weave to signify new beginnings.

Hospice “passports” were stamped and upon collecting 10 of the 15 possible stamp locations people were entered to win a draw. Play with Clay, Guelph’s interactive pottery studio, showed up to make the day fun for those of all ages!

From 1pm – 3pm there was ballroom dancing, a drumming circle, belly dancing, and the adorable puppy parade! Who could resist that?

Alongside all of the wonderful donators, Tangles would also like to thank the Hospice Team for being so informative throughout the whole process. We couldn’t have done it without the Guelph community and the Hospice team!
