U.S. Army | TRANSITIONAL COMPENSATION PROGRAM | Self-Guided Tutorial for Commanders

Be especially aware of how you react

during times of crisis. Leader behavior at that time is remembered and sends a strong message about what you truly believe and value. Collect your thoughts before making off-the-cuff remarks. Ask yourself what you want less experienced leaders to learn from your reaction to a crisis. What do you want them to be like when they face a similar situation?” — Commanders’ Handbook for Unit Leaders: Development, p. 13. Retrieved from Combined Arms Center—Center for Army Leadership

“Being married to a Soldier, it is so easy to feel alone. For me, being 1700 miles from anyone who knew or loved me made leaving an abusive marriage more frightening than staying. When the day came that my husband crossed a line we could never come back from, the victim advocates at Fort Stewart became the only lifeline I could hold on to. Going to court with me, calling to make sure I was OK, and valiantly fighting for my rights made all the difference in me getting through it. When we got our letter approving us for Transitional Compensation, it saved our lives. The damage we have had to our lives was so palpable that I wasn't sure I could keep going, we have been homeless, destitute, and desperate with no end in sight. The Transitional Compensation changed that. My children and I now have an actual chance at regaining our lives. I had been certain everyone had completely forgotten we existed, thank you so much for proving me wrong. Thank you so much for giving me my life back and my children a chance at happiness again."
