I was born in Romania and studied in Lyon, France. In 2007, I completed a Masters in Architecture, and received my Masters in Civil Engineering two years later. This dual education in top French universities gave me both the technical and artistic backgrounds necessary to succeed in my field.

My proficiency in different softwares allows me to perform visual rende-rings such as 2D drawings. However, hand drawing is my best illustration and thinking tool. For me, it is one of the most powerful skills an architect can possess, with scalling and proportion.

Optimized simple spaces revealed by natural lighting, elegance and har-mony are my golden rules. But I always keep in mind that a building is also technical: structure, fluids and functionality allow it to work properly. The complexity of a building is growing, but we must never forget the essen-tial: space cannot exist without light.

I find my inspiration in design, arts, music, and great architects such as Ri-chard Neutra, Le Corbusier, or Mies Van der Rohe. I enjoy exploring many other interests including sketching, photography, modelling, and because of my French side... cooking, bien sûr.

Enjoy the visit!

JUMP AROUND39 apartmentsVilleurbanne (2012)

Page 7: Claudiu Lucaschi Portfolio / Book

This residential building of 39 apartments is a competition win-ner for an urban planning project in Villeurbanne, a suburb of the city of Lyon. Its particular loca-tion in a landscape garden off the road, led us to draw a ryth-mic facade with wooden balco-nies of varying heights. In order to make up for the mis-sing surfaces created by the intentional breached skyline, we added a volume inside the land ownership. This contributes to the structure of the landscape garden.

BRICK BOX64 apartmentsLyon (2011)

Page 9: Claudiu Lucaschi Portfolio / Book

The dynamic facade of this brick building is part of an urban de-velopment zone in the south of Lyon. The project is comprised of two buildings: In the back, on a corner of the secondary streets there are three floors. On the main street there are five floors with metallic clear gray balconies which contrast with the dark brown bricks of the main facade. Two penthouse floors with creamy white coating add balance to the building. The varied materials contribute to the overall rhythm & scaling.

The program of this project is mixed: it consists of a super-market on the ground floor, and residential housing on the upper floors.Over the supermarket, in the center of the land ownership, a generous green garden allows the inhabitants to enjoy a plea-sant view. Each facade has a different cha-racter, whether it is facing a main street or the square. The majority of the apartments have opposite light exposures.

GOLD130 Student apartmentsSaint-Priest (2011)

Page 13: Claudiu Lucaschi Portfolio / Book

Saint-Priest is a small, eastern suburb of Lyon. The universities in this city have turned it into another important urban planning project. City planners want to change the image of its early 60’s architecture and city planning development built especially and rapidly for immigrant workers. This project is the competition winner to build student apartments. It is a simple volumetrical building with generous windows coated with a gol-den perforated metal skin, and will mark the entrance of the city.

8+311 apartmentsLyon (2011)

Page 15: Claudiu Lucaschi Portfolio / Book

These two buildings will be realized simultaneously in a hou-sing estate in Lyon. The smaller one (3 apartments) marks the entrance of this housing suburb, while the bigger one (8 apart-ments) is part of an urban plan-ning project with other already completed buildings (most of them by the ‘atelier Régis Ga-chon architectes associés’ archi-tecture firm). The architectural style is mini-malistic. The materials include coating and glued limestone, which protects the underfloor and raises the building.

White coating, gray U steel pro-files, terracotta panels: mix it all together and you get the winner of a major urban planning com-petition in the suburbs of Lyon. This development project is meant to erase the area’s nega-tive image. The first part of the building is tower-shaped with 7 floors, marking the street corner. The second part is lower and sets back to reveal garden spaces for the ground-level apartments.

Page 19: Claudiu Lucaschi Portfolio / Book

The building is located in the chic part of the city of Lyon and the project is a renovation from old offices into apartments with new offices on the ground floor. We have reconsidered the street alignment by adding large bal-conies as an extension, while preserving the building’s mid 70’s design with smooth angles. A glass skin with a soft vegetal printed pattern has a double purpose: intimacy and sobriety, as this building faces the Brot-teaux Chapel.

Cafe des ArtsStudent BarVaulx-en-Velin (2009)

Page 23: Claudiu Lucaschi Portfolio / Book

After winning a student competi-tion to re-design the Architecture School bar in Lyon, our team pro-posed to redraw this space. The new bar is located in the center of the room, under an exisiting mezzanine. The metallic furni-ture was especially made for the school, and a geometric sticker pattern gives the glass facade a makeover. It also reveals the bar from the outside and adds a smooth shadow effect.

Passive housesMasters project(2007)

A new way of considering the country-side through an envi-ronmental-friendly approach for housing was the subject of my architecture Master’s degree.First, an urban global design which follows the contours of this specific land and organizes different types of housing. Then, it focuses on passive house de-sign. I chose to work with woo-den-frame houses which provide good insulation, and control summer heat, complete with so-lar and photovoltaic roof panels.

The contemporary design of this house extension reveals a double personality, combining the old and the new and resul-ting in a dynamic volume. Natu-ral light and landscape views were essential for the project. They give a straightforward res-ponse to the needs of this family of six.

The purpose of this project was a 400 ft2 extension for a young couple.Besides its indisputable visual warmth, wood was an inex-pensive choice for the clients that also conformed to limited construction space. The precast process allowed us to build it quickly. In a few words, the result of the project is a minimalistic yet ele-gant and efficient design.
