Class Capture

Class CaptureBeth Pfeiffer, Ph.D., OTR/L, BCPClass CaptureWhat is class capture and what does it allow you to do?

Class capture allows you to record a class or presentation/event including the presentation, demonstrations and discussion that occur. This information is then provided to you in a link that can be posted on blackboard or shared with the students in other formats. It allows faculty and students to have access to the material. Some class capture systems allow for live streaming of the information where the student can view this as the presentation/demonstration or discussion is occurring from their computers or another place.2Class CaptureHow can it be used to promote good teaching practices and promote student learning?

Class capture has many different uses. I will cover some main ones today but as innovative teachers you may have additional methods and ideas to use this technology for teaching strategies and to promote learning.3Class Capture1) Addresses needs of students with different learning styles

Students have different learning styles and class capture allows you to reinforce both auditory and visual learning which are two primary ways of learning.4Class Capture2) Addresses needs of students with learning differences

Class capture can serve as a resource for students with learning differences as they can review and access materials that they may have missed in the classroom environment that day due to their learning differences. Give examples of attentional issues and auditory processing or dysgraphia.5Class Capture3) Provides access to material for review

Research has identified that students only absorb/pick up and integrate a fairly small percentage of information that is presented in the classroom environment. Class capture allows them to review, study and integrate course information that they would not otherwise have access to again. It can also allow access to class for students who were excused or absent from class so that you do not have to make up individual teaching time with them or can be very helpful in situations such as snow days.6Class Capture4) Provides access to special presentation and topics

There may be a guest lecture that you do not have access to frequently such as someone who is only coming in one time. This information can be recorded so that it can be used in the future. It CAPTURES those special presenters. Provide an example of the President of our professional association coming into to talk with the students and how this is a very special occasion that could be captured.7Class Capture5) Archives valuable information to use in current or future classes

Obviously we want to present the most updated and relevant information in our courses, but class capture does allow you to save information that might be relevant over time to use again in the future as needed.8Class CaptureConclusion

Todays presentation was recorded using ECHO class capture technology. I hope that you find this information helpful and that you can use class capture technology to expand learning opportunities for your students and further expand on how you can use class capture through innovative teaching strategies. 9
