CJS 210 Week 1 Day 5: Law Enforcement Agencies Checkpo int Local and State law enforcement agencies There are many duties, f unctions, and responsibilities of local law enforcement agencies. Local law enforcement agencies perform routine patrol duties, perform criminal investigations, arrest law violators, enforce traffic laws, provide crowd and traffic control, issue special licenses and permits, and provide emergency services. (Dempsey & Forst, 2005, pp. 37-38). County law enforcement agencies can perform duties of th coroner, tax assessors and collectors, they are keepers of the county jails, court attendants, executors of criminal and civil processes, and respond to citizens calls for service. (Dempsey & Forst, 2005, p. 38). State law enforcement agencies perform many, if not all of the same duties and responsibilities as the local law enforcement agen cies. The state police patrol small towns and state highways, regulate traffic, and have the primary responsibility to enforce some state laws. The state police also carry out many duties for local police agencies, such as the managing of state training academies, criminal identification systems, and crime laboratories. The main duties include highway patrol, traffic enforcement, and the patrol of small towns.(Dempsey & Forst, 2005, p. 41). These agencies engage in mutual assistance programs with neighboring agencies and come to one another's aid when n ecessary. They keep residents, business people, and tourists safe. They will respond to the challenge with speciali zed units as various demands ri se. (Dempsey & Forst , 2005, p. 39). One of the main differences between state and local law enforcement agencies are ea ch of these agencies have their own jurisdiction of their town, city , county, or the entire state. Other differences are the roles that the officers perform, they have different relationships with the citizens in their area of jurisdiction. Federal law enforcement agencies

CJS 210 Week 1 Day 5: Law Enforcement Agencies Checkpoint

Local and State law enforcement agencies

There are many duties, functions, and responsibilities of local law enforcement agencies. Locallaw enforcement agencies perform routine patrol duties, perform criminal investigations, arrest law

violators, enforce traffic laws, provide crowd and traffic control, issue special licenses and permits, and

provide emergency services. (Dempsey & Forst, 2005, pp. 37-38).

County law enforcement agencies can perform duties of th coroner, tax assessors and collectors,

they are keepers of the county jails, court attendants, executors of criminal and civil processes, and

respond to citizens calls for service. (Dempsey & Forst, 2005, p. 38).

State law enforcement agencies perform many, if not all of the same duties and responsibilities

as the local law enforcement agencies. The state police patrol small towns and state highways, regulate

traffic, and have the primary responsibility to enforce some state laws. The state police also carry out

many duties for local police agencies, such as the managing of state training academies, criminal

identification systems, and crime laboratories. The main duties include highway patrol, traffic

enforcement, and the patrol of small towns.(Dempsey & Forst, 2005, p. 41).

These agencies engage in mutual assistance programs with neighboring agencies and come to

one another's aid when necessary. They keep residents, business people, and tourists safe. They will

respond to the challenge with specialized units as various demands rise. (Dempsey & Forst, 2005, p.

39).

One of the main differences between state and local law enforcement agencies are each of these

agencies have their own jurisdiction of their town, city, county, or the entire state. Other differences are

the roles that the officers perform, they have different relationships with the citizens in their area of

jurisdiction.

The three federal law enforcement agencies I am going to identify are: The Department of

Justice, The Department of the Treasury, and The Department of Homeland Security. The

responsibilities of The Department of Justice are to enforce all federal laws, represent the government

when it is involved in a court action, and conducts independent investigations through its lawenforcement services. (Dempsey & Forst, 2005, p. 43). The responsibilities of The Department of

Treasury are having administrative control over the Internal Revenue service-Criminal Investigation

Division and several very important offices related to the financial aspects of crime, drug trafficking,

and terrorism, including the Treasury Executive Office for Asset Forfeiture (TEOAF), the Executive

Office for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crime (EOTF/FC), the Office of Foreign Assets Control

(OFAC), and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). (Dempsey & Forst, 2005, p. 46).

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) major priority is the protection of the nation against

terrorist attacks. The departments units analyze threats and intelligence, guards our borders and

airports, protect our critical infrastructure, and coordinates our nation's responses to future

emergencies. The DHS's major law enforcement division is its Border Patrol and Transportation

Security directorate, which is responsible for maintaining the security of our nation's borders. The

DHS's first priority is to prevent the entry of terrorists and the instruments of terrorism while

simultaneously ensuring the efficient flow of lawful traffic and commerce. (Dempsey & Forst, 2005, p.

48).
