    Beneath the medieval castle, the neighbourhoods o Brescia takelie and shape: the Roman city o Brixia and the three main piazzas:

    Perectly restored, today the Castle is home to two important museums dedicated to ancient armaments and tothe history o the unication o Italy. The traditional manuacture o sporting and hunting arms dates back to theSeventeenth Century. Brescia is the birthplace o one o the oldest gun companies in the world, Beretta.     Located nearby in the heart o the old town are the citys threeamous piazzas, which have become symbols o Brescia. PiazzaPaolo VI is dominated by buildings o dierent styles and epochs.

    The New Cathedralis located in the centre o the piazza and wasbuilt between the Seventeenth and NineteenthCenturies. There were several pauses in theworks and changes o architects, resultingin a Seventeenth Century central nave, anEighteenth Century aade and a NineteenthCentury cupola. The majestic dome (thethird highest in Italy) holds a statue o PaulVI (Giovanbattista Montini), the pope romBrescia.

    The Old Cathedralis a rare example o Romanesque architecture o the Eleventh Century. Its circular layout is acopy o the Church o the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and the atmosphere inside transportsvisitors and the aithul to a heavenly dimension. The Old Cathedral is decorated by preciousartworks by renowned masters such as Il Moretto and il Romanino.

    The Brolettois a typical example o solid and harmoniousmedieval architecture. It was built in theTwelth Century, when the monk Arnaldo daBrescia was outspoken against the corruptiono the modern world. His preaching earned

    him death at the stake here in 1155. Thepiazza is ull o history in every corner andascinates us with reminders o historicalgures whose memory lingers here.

    Designed by Marcello Piacentini, the piazzawas built between 1929 and 1932 and it

    was opened by Benito Mussolini. Austere anddominated by well dened and orderly verticaland horizontal lines, with constructionsin marble and red bricks, it was built tocelebrate the victory o the rst World Warand designed as a site or political meetings,as demonstrated by the marble statuarypodium situated on the East side.

    Today Piazza della Vittoria is the home to thefower, antiques and used book markets andonce a year, or the historical Mille Miglia carrace, the square is the site o the registrationo the cars.

    Every year in the month oMay, Piazza Vittoria hosts theregistration o cars participatingin the Mille Miglia race and istransormed into a showcase

    or the world history oautomobiles.
