HEAVY USE AREA PROTECTION

CONCRETE & GRAVEL

NOTES:

1. Prepare a smooth, firm foundation prior to placing geotextile and rock courses.

2. Compact the base course and surface aggregate materials with the tracks or wheels of construction equipment.

3. Concrete must be designed to provide a 28-day compressive strength of 4000 psi. All concrete must be 6 inches thick with 2 inches of top cover over the steel. Maintain 3 inch concrete cover of steel along edges.

4. Steel in the floor must be #4 steel reinforcing bars placed both ways, at 15" on center and bar splice a minimum of 15 inches. Steel must be tied securely in place.

5. The recommended minimum distance from water tank or fountain to edge of gravel pad is 8 feet for cattle and 5 feet for smaller animals such as sheep or goats.

6. Use geotextile at all soil-rock interfaces. All four classes of geotextile in Construction Specification IA-95 are acceptable unless the subgrade is very soft. Very soft soil is easily rutted during preparation. The geotextile must meet Class I or IV properties for very soft soil. The subgrade must be prepared without ruts prior to placement of the geotextile.

7. Any geotextile splices must overlap a minimum of 18 inches.

8. Proper subgrade preparation is essential to the long-term performance of the slab. Subgrade shall be uniformly firm, smooth, moist, well-compacted and able to support construction traffic without rutting. Subgrade materials shall be blended, or unsuitable materials removed and replaced as required to obtain uniform materials, moisture and

compaction. Granular or sand base is not a substitute for proper subgrade preparation. Subgrade shall be free of frost, ruts, mud and standing water prior to placement of concrete. Grading tolerances shall be as specified in Construction Specification IA-32.

9. Conversion from Cu.Yd. to Ton is for the convenience of the Contractor. The designquantity is based on volume. The quantity in tons is based on a converstion factor

of 1.5 ton/cu.yd. which may vary with material and source. Check with supplier forrecommended conversion factors.

10. Top of Concrete surface at tank must be higher than surrounding ground to allow for drainage.

11. Recommended minimum distance from water tank or fountain to edge of concrete pad is 2 feet.

Granular Base,

See Note 5

See

Note 11

*** Granular base is required if a firm, uniform subgrade cannot be achieved, if

needed for drainage, or for ease of construction. Granular base shall be min. 4" thick meeting all requirements for subgrade listed in Note 8. For most applications, material provided should be dense-graded with less than 16% by weight passing the No. 200 sieve. Suggested gradations are IDOT No. 11 or IDOT No. 14. Extremely wet site conditions may require a larger or cleaner gradation placed between the existing subgrade and base layer. In dry conditions a topping of limestone screenings may facilitate finish grading.
