Regular readers of The Knowledge will know that the Council have appointed consultants Urban Initiatives, to work with local residents, and others with an interest in the area, to help develop the Knowle West Regeneration Framework.

The ‘Framework’ will plan new developments in Knowle West over the next 20 years. These developments are likely to include new housing, new shops and new community facilities, more employment opportunities, a new primary school and better public transport.

It is really important that you have a say on the development of your area. A number of engagement activities are being planned for September 2009 and, as a local resident or stakeholder you will be invited to help develop the exciting plans for Knowle West. So get involved. It is hoped there will be an agreed Framework by April 2010. For more info visit www.bristol.gov.uk/kwrf or call Anita Pearce, Community In Partnership 908 4248.

Jo Garton (manager) said: “We have only been training together for 6 months, their conduct & behaviour was brilliant, they did Kwest proud!” Ella (player) said “It showed us what it’s like to play against teams at a very high standard.”See pg12 to join.

Positive Futures is delighted to announce they have been given a ‘gold’ rating in their national independent evaluation putting them alongside only 17 other projects nationally to make this standard. More details to follow in future edition.

The Salvation Army charity shop is now open on Filwood Broadway. It’s run by, and the proceeds go to, The SA in Knowle West. Recycle clothes and buy reasonably priced replacements. Daventry Road, on a whim and I really enjoyed it. The approach to the subject of a long suffering mum and woman trying to juggle a million balls, was funny, uplifting and refreshing. I know I definitely identified with some of her dilemmas and frustrations. I loved it ( I smiled, laughed and wiped a few tears away especailly at the end).It was great value for money and it was good to know that I was supporting local theatre. Bring on the next one. A pioneering scheme to resolve disputes between neighbours and reduce low-level anti-social behaviour without involving the police or courts has been launched.

Filwood Restorative Approach, aims to get people together to resolve areas of conflict that are affecting their quality of life such as noisy neighbours or minor vandalism. By discussing the issues with a trained facilitator, usually also a local resident, the problem can be tackled before it

spirals into a criminal offence. The scheme, developed and supported by Safer Bristol, is funded by Bristol City Council and backed by Avon & Somerset Police. Cynthia Goldstein, coordinator of Filwood Restorative Approach, believes that most problems can be resolved by talking them through – getting agreement on what can be done.

Any resident in the Knowle West area can contact the Restorative Approach team on T: 0117 908 4229

Congratulations to Richard Pearce, who was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June, for his work with disadvantaged people in Bristol. Richard was the first Manager of the Filwood Hope Centre when it was being set up in 1995.

He worked tirelessly for eleven years for people on the estate, and made Filwood Hope the valuable community facility it continues to be today. Richard became a familiar figure in Knowle West, and helped innumerable families and people with a whole range of issues – and this award is richly deserved.

KnoWledge FIndS THe anSWer Question from a resident:Ken: “In the last newsletter you said to recycle batteries but not leaking batteries. What do we do with leaking batteries?”Knowledge finds the answer:The recycling crews cannot take leaking batteries, (health and safety issues for collectors as they pick them up by hand, also the recycles do not want them). One or two ordinary household batteries can go in the refuse bin. Car batteries can be taken to the main household recycling centres. A lot of ordinary leaking household batteries should also go to the main household recycling centre.

A mattress here, a dead Tv there, broken glass and empty cans of lager thrown into the street – is this what you think your area should be like?

People do have the job of cleaning streets, but the area would be cleaner and their job easier if residents did not throw their rubbish onto the streets. Just as when the hedges are cut and gardens tidied, it looks better when you take pride in it.

If you want to get rid of rubbish, put it in street bins or take it home. If you have bulky waste such as a fridge, take it to St Phillips Recycling Centre (Folly Lane, St Philips, BS2 0QS) or call Bristol City Council to arrange a special collection. T: 0117 922 2100 (collection charge may apply). Or become a street rep. To find out more call Cynthia T: 0117 908 4229

The people of Knowle West take their food very seriously as the 3rd annual food fest in July has just proved. Activities included cooking demos, live local entertainment, sweet making, cycled powered fun, and a community food swap shop.

In the lead up to the food fest residents joined in on a wild food walk on the northern Slopes. We picnicked in the sunshine eating treats such as dog rose petals, wild chives, gooseberries and strawberries, picked from the slopes.

The highlight was the sweet smelling elderflowers, which we made into cordial at the community kitchen. The cordial was offered to people to taste , teamed up with a soda stream making it the new Knowle West alternative to coke!Next Food fest is in October. 20’S PlenTy For US GLEnn vOWLES

20’s Plenty For Us was formed in order to work for the implementation of 20 mph as the default speed limit on residential roads in the UK, in place of 30mph.

The balance is shifting towards roads and streets as public spaces for people rather than just motors – safer, cleaner, healthier and more civil. Growing numbers of cities are doing it and Bristol will begin a 20mph pilot scheme in two areas soon. The Bristol group was recently launched. 34 neighbourhood champions are in place, including myself in Knowle. The target is 100 champions so if you want to be involved either as a champion yourself or as part of a team then email [email protected] or [email protected].

Research has shown that the vast majority of the public, over 80% in polls, would like 20 mph on residential roads. After all it’s where people live! Recent changes in Dept of Transport guidelines have relaxed the recommendations and in many residential areas 20 mph limits may be set without any physical measures at all – which means the change is small. www.20splentyforbristol.org.ukFor support in how to use the internet from basic skills to e-petitions and online discussions contact Makala Cheung at Knowle West Media Centre T: 0117 353 2895 E: [email protected]

How does your garden grow? By July it should be doing nicely; pots, plots and baskets of multi-coloured flowers, soft fruits and homegrown veg. So if you haven’t started yet what should you do?

In mid-summer it’s still possible to grow soft fruit, veg and flowers from already established plants on sale in garden centres, and quick-growing crops (like salads) from seed. We can also plant our Autumn-Winter garden. July and August are the month to sow Autumn Carrots, Calabrese (a type of broccoli), Winter Cabbage, Salads (e.g. Mooli, Winter Radishes) and spring greens for 2010: you could also grow Leaf beet (Perpetual Spinach) and Turnips. It’s the right time to plant Hyacinths for Christmas, and plan your displays of Narcissi/ Daffodils and Tulips for March- April flowering.

Don’t forget to water wisely- one good soak each week in summer is better than little and often- and remember to wear a hat and plenty of sun cream to protect your skin. Happy gardening!

On Thursday 28th May, our group Future Proof, a group run by Positive Futures for young people aged 11+, participated in an activity where we all worked with a professional graffiti artist painting 12 local bins including some from local primary schools.

As a group we wanted to prove to our community in Knowle that we are young positive people and we are all willing to do something for the community.

We all gave up a day of our half term holidays to show our community that we can do good and we want to do good, and hopefully the work we have done will prevent future vandalism to our bins.

Well thanks to Bristol City Council and Bristol nHS’s forward thinking, Knowle West Media Centre is using different types of media as a way to get people excited about traveling in a more sustainable way, benefiting everyone’s health and wellbeing as well as the future of the planet!

The Media Centre have run some media workshops where local people have been producing the ‘Active Travel passbook’, a locally relevant guide book which will hopefully inspire people to be more active.

At one of the workshops, the local ‘Fit n Fab’ group mapped out alternative travel routes around KW. The group used the Knowle West Green Map http://www.kwmc.org.uk/greenmap to record cycling and walking routes. Recently I went on 2-week

holiday to Coral Sea

Imperial in Sharm El

Sheikh, Egypt.

It was fantastic and I would

recommend Egypt to anyone.

There are a lot of things to

do in the hotel especially for

children, the activities included

Aquagym, water polo, water

and beach volleyball. The hotel

we stayed at had a private beach

and also offers water sports,

camel rides and lots of other

activities as well.

Outside of the precinct it is quite

fab, there are a lot of places to go.

The best places were the Water

Park and namma Bay. In namma

bay there are a lot of places to

eat and lots of shops and you

can have lots of fun haggling with

local market traders. They are

also fascinated with Asda.The

only bad thing is the flight that is

a five and a half hour journey.

The bin men came off strike throughout May and into June. The manager

of the company decided that 2.75 percent increase was reasonable to

the current economy, the strike has been hard on all people because

rats and flies have been round more often, the bin bags have been filling

up the bins for two weeks and people have been complaining about it.

The people who were on strike have finally finished and they have been

driving round collecting very little rubbish, they have been missing certain

houses on some streets.

Pretrisha who recently saw a rat in her house was

devastated and said “it’s because of the rubbish

collection problems in this city’’.

This month the ‘Mouth
