I never lack hope. Although there are sobering realities we

must address, such as the report published by the United

Nations earlier this year outlining rates of extinction and loss

of biodiversity, I remain rooted in the role the Cincinnati Zoo

& Botanical Garden plays in mitigating crises like these.

Hope abounds when I see the progress we are making as a

community that plants pollinator gardens in backyards; when

I look to the successes of our CREW scientists as they unlock

the mysteries of jaguar reproduction; or as I watch us move

toward sustainable actions of water and energy conservation

that have a positive impact on our neighbors throughout

Avondale and beyond.

The Zoo’s greatest strength is our reach. Through our

myriad programs we are cultivating passionate advocates

willing to take action. It is a myth that saving wildlife or reducing

pollution is bad for business. What’s good for business is

doing things smarter. That’s how we do it at the Cincinnati

Zoo, where every day we make a difference for the animals

and plants we love and need.

It’seasytoremainhope-filledhere.Ourcollectiveactions

as a community have secured the title of #1 Zoo and the

Greenest Zoo in America. That inspires me and feeds my hope

for all that lies ahead. Thank you for being on this journey with

us!

Sincerely,

Thane MaynardZoo Director

A little over a year ago, our More Home to Roam campaign

kicked off with a challenge from Linda and Harry Fath: raise

$100 million toward your mission and we will contribute

another $50 million. By their incredible generosity, the Faths

demonstratedafaithandconfidenceinourZooandthepeople

who make it great every day. In the months that followed, tens

of thousands in our community have joined them to help us

raise more than 25 million dollars, bringing us a quarter of the

way to our goal.

With the faith that others have shown for us comes a

responsibility. We can transform our Zoo into a place of wonder

for generations to come – to engage people with plants and

animals and to foster conservation both in our community

and in far off lands. We do not shirk from that responsibility.

Asthepagesofthisannualreportreflect,thisisanexciting

time. Construction is underway on new facilities including

Roo Valley set to open next year bringing new levels of

engagement to our visitors. We continue to learn and

advance the care of our animals across the board, to enhance

sustainability of our operations and accessibility to all, and to

take our messages of education and conservation ever deeper

into our community.

Your continuing support – as member, donor, advocate,

cheerleader – is helping shape the future for our Zoo, our

animals, and their counterparts in the wild.

We thank you. We could not be where we are today

without you.

Sincerely,

Bird-watching tips, seek-and-find opportunities and bird identification activities are featured in games and colorful, Charley Harper-inspired signs.

June 2018 The Zoo announced an historic

gift that allowed us to embark on a bold campaign to ensure

our future. Local philanthropists, Harry and Linda Fath, who

also made a generous donation to help the Zoo complete its

indoor gorilla facility and Africa habitat, have stepped up with an unprecedented, transformation-

al matching gift of $50 million. When fundraising is complete in 2025, this matching gift will have represented one third of

the $150 million goal of the More Home to Roam capital campaign.

AUGUST 2018The Zoo, in partnership with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, celebrated Access for All Day. The Zoo has been working hard to become the most welcoming, accessible, and inclusive zoo for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

JUNE 2018In collaboration with the animal care

staff at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, scientists from CREW

produced their second pregnancy in ocelots using a novel fixed-time

artificial insemination (AI) method.

SEPTEMBER 2018The Zoo was awarded a $22,000 grant

from the Duke Energy Foundation that will support key parts of a project to

create more pollinator friendly habitats in the urban landscape.

Referring to an animal’s collective physical, mental, and emotional states over a period of time, animal welfare is measured on a continuum from good to poor and is at the core of everything we do at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. The continuous pursuit of not just good, but optimal animal welfare is how the Zoo defines animal excellence.

TheCincinnatiZoo&BotanicalGarden takesa scientific

approach to caring for animals. This is done by implement-

ing a holistic and evidence-based approach to understanding

and enhancing the lives of animals in the Zoo’s care. With an

innovative animal excellence initiative, the Zoo is focusing

efforts on ways to best care for animals so they can thrive.

The Cincinnati Zoo defines animal excellence as the

continuous pursuit for optimal animal welfare. Combining

this new science with the Zoo’s experienced team of expert

care staff is the best approach for promoting animal

excellence.

A prime example of this symbiotic relationship between

science and animal welfare is the story of the Zoo’s little blue

penguins. Keepers used science and research along with

cutting-edge technology to study the movements of these

beloved birds and track their physical activity. Using radio-

frequency identification (RFID) technology, keepers were

able to use the data collected to change feeding practices

in order to promote physical activity, ultimately improving

the health of the little blues. Not only are the lives of the

Cincinnati Zoo’s little blue penguins improved, but we are

sharing this research and information with Zoos across the

nation in order to drastically improve the lives of little blue

penguins everywhere.

To help ensure optimal animal welfare is being considered,

the Zoo’s animal excellence team was an integral part of the

design process for new animal habitats and renovations

planned as a part of the More Home to Roam initiative. Best

practices research for Roo Valley, which will include a new

habitat for little blue penguins, included reviewing penguin

pool designs that promote swimming behavior and researching

how rocky surfaces can promote better foot health in

penguins.

This is just the start. The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical

Garden is committed to providing the best experiences to

the animals in our care.

UC Engineering Project In 2018, The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden partnered with the University of Cincinnati to develop an innovative course designed to teach students to understand the needs of animals and create enrichment activities to meet those needs. The student teams had to think outside the box to create unique enrich-ment items including a self-service shower for rhinoceros hornbills, interactive puzzle feeders for giraffes, and a tube filled with lights and sounds for tigers that is remotely activated by keepers. The opportunity for Zoo staff to collaborate with some of its young neighbors at UC was just as important as the enthusiasm the students brought to the Zoo’s enrichment program.

In 2018, hundreds of thousands of

people participated in the Year of the

Bird to build a better world for birds.

The Cincinnati Zoo joined the cele-

bration through multiple efforts, be-

ginning with an extreme makeover to

the Wings of the World habitat. The

renovations offer visitors the opportu-

nity to observe an amazing diversity of

birds from across the globe in an open-

ing connections to our own native bird

mented with UVA-emitting lights that

colors and skylights to enhance natural

opportunities and bird identification

activities are featured in games and

colorful, Charley Harper inspired

Better Homes for Birdssignage throughout the building.

We did not stop there, though. In

the past year we brought bald eagles

back to the Zoo, successfully bred and

raised Raggiana birds-of-paradise and

partnered with Raptor Inc. to assist in

recovery of injured and ill raptors. The

Zoo hatched two Guam rail chicks with

the hope of reintroducing them into

their native habitat where they are

currently extinct. We championed Lights

Out Cincinnati, an initiative spanning

across 26 cities committed to helping

migratory birds travel safely by asking

community members to turn lights off

during migration seasons, so birds are

not disoriented and drawn to building

lights. And, we installed Feather

Friendly dot decal patterns on exhibit

windows to reduce the number of bird

strikes against glass enclosures.

Although the Year of the Bird has

come to an end, our efforts to build a

better home for birds across the world

and right here at home continue. Always.

fessionals almost a year to bring Ndume home. Led by Ron

Evans, the Zoo’s Curator of Primates, the team showed

courageous advocacy, action and tenacity – not surprising

for a Zoo with an 88-year history of caring for gorillas.

Arrangements for Ndume’s travel and re-introduction to

the Zoo were planned with Ndume in mind. According to

Ron, “Gorillas require and desire to be near other gorillas.

As with all new gorillas, we want to make sure Ndume is

comfortable with his new home, keepers, and routines.

Today, Ndume is making steady progress in his new

home, exploring each of the five different zones in our

Gorilla World habitat. We look forward to introducing

Ndume to Zoo guests.

Welcome Home, Ndume!

From Dan Ashe, President & CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA): They say, “If you’re going to talk-the-talk, then be prepared to walk-the-walk.” If you’re like me, many of you may have found yourself in situations where your talk got you into a walk that was longer and harder than expected. The path Cincinnati walked with Ndume was steep, narrow and full of risk. They persisted. My favorite definition of courage is when someone follows their belief and does what they know is right, even when the price may be more than they want to pay. With Ndume, Cincinnati Zoo showed this kind of courage. They did what they believed to be right for Ndume as an individual gorilla. By doing this, they have enhanced their reputation as a leader in animal welfare. They deserve our collective applause and admiration. Thank you Cincinnati Zoo, and welcome home Ndume!

It started with eight monkeys, three deer, six raccoons, a

hyena, an alligator, a circus elephant and over 400 birds.

Those were the animals that lived at the Cincinnati Zoo

when it opened its doors in 1875. We have certainly grown

over the years!

For 144 years the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s

expertise in animal care, conservation, education, and

horticulture has evolved, and our habitats must continue

to evolve too. The vision of More Home to Roam is already

taking shape. A redesigned entry lends safe, streamlined

visitor access and amenities such as additional family style

restrooms and a calming room for guests with development

disabilities.

Hops, a craft beer garden with local flavors and a

multi-tiered deck opened this fall and will offer a treetop

view of Roo Valley when it opens in Summer 2020. Featuring

a kangaroo walk-about, a new little blue penguin habitat and

Klimb, a 60-element, high adventure ropes course.

Future phases of More Home to Roam include additional

parking solutions, enhanced visitor experiences, and bigger,

more naturalistic spaces for animals. Rhino Reserve will be

redesigned to include a larger, mixed species yard, expanded

moats and visitor viewing decks. Elephant Trek, the final

phase of More Home to Roam, willbenearlyfivetimesthesize

of the current elephant yard and feature naturalistic trees,

mud wallows, grasses, pools and streams. As the greenest zoo

in the country, the Zoo is also on track to be net zero energy,

water and waste by 2025.

More Home to Roam will not only enrich the lives of the

Zoo’s animals – and Zoo guests – it also symbolizes another

giant leap in the Zoo’s efforts to conserve Earth’s biodiversity

and create a world where both people and wildlife can

thrive.

In the summer of 2018, we launched our More Home to Roam capital campaign with a goal of $150 million to dramatically transform habitats and expand community and conservation efforts, here and around the world. We are well on our way to reaching the goal!

Harry and Linda Fath In June 2018, Cincinnati humanitari-

ans Harry and Linda Fath believed in our

vision enough to contribute a record

$50 million transformational challenge

gift which marked the beginning of the

Zoo’s most expansive change to date.

Harry shared, “Linda and I helped

launch this campaign because the Zoo

is for everybody and it makes Cincinnati

a great place for families. We hope that

thousands of people will respond to our

challenge and help match our gift.”

Campaign Update At the heart of every great city is a

great zoo. At the heart of every great

zoo are compassionate, committed

citizens who know what zoos mean to

the world. Investment in the Zoo is an

investment in our planet. As a globally

recognized,fiercedefenderofallman-

ner of wildlife and the environment, the

Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is

not only a place to see the wonder, pow-

er, and beauty of nature, it’s a place the

world trusts to help save it.

The Fath’s challenge gift has inspired

thousands of people to give, to the tune

of $25 million raised since June 2018.

Cincinnati is indeed a Zoo town. We are

tremendously grateful!

A key pillar of our mission is “Serving Community” – giving back so others can move forward. From partnering with diverse and economically challenged communities locally to supporting our global neighbors, giving back to help others move forward is a responsibility the Zoo takes seriously.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, in partnership

with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

(CCHMC), has been working hard to become the most

welcoming, accessible, and inclusive Zoo for individuals with

developmental disabilities and their families. With a grant

fromtheInstituteofMuseumandLibraryServices(IMLS)in

2017, the Zoo has made great progress toward this goal and

has hosted two Zoo Access for All Days.

In addition, hundreds of Zoo employees and volunteers

have participated in training provided by CCHMC’s Leadership

Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities

(LEND)programtolearnhowtobetterengagewithvisitors

of all abilities. Our Family Advisory Council has provided

guidance leading to the implementation of a variety of

supports, including adult-sized changing tables, sensory

maps, a skip-the-line rides access pass, social narratives,

visualsupports,andsensorybagsfilledwithoralmotorchewy

tubes, fidgets, noise canceling headphones and sunglasses.

New sensory gardens are a place to sit when feeling a little

overwhelmed, inviting visitors to use their senses to explore

carefully curated container gardens. A calming room and a

second sensory-friendly, family restroom opened this fall. The

Adventure Ropes course scheduled to open in Summer 2020

will have ADA accessible components.

The Zoo is committed to providing all members of our com-

munity with the opportunity to make a positive connection to

wildlife and wild places. This commitment is emphasized in

our vision for the future, and funds raised through our More

Home to Roam capital campaign will continue to make the Zoo

experience better for everyone.

Light Up Avondale In 2017 and 2018, The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden was awarded a grant from the Duke Class Benefit Fund to convert the Zoo campus to all LED lighting, including the annual PNC Festival of Lights. That goal has been achieved, and now the Zoo is spreading light and efficiency to the whole neighborhood by providing energy-efficient LED lighting in residences and businesses throughout Avondale. The Light Up Avondale team has transitioned 26 neighborhood businesses to LED lighting, resulting in energy and maintenance savings of over $150,000. The team has also upgraded 65 Avondale homes and hopes to do the same for every house in the neighborhood.

Conservation is at the core of everything we do. As Zoo Director Thane Maynard states, “Protecting wildlife equals protecting people.” From field projects supporting lion conservation in Kenya and saving sloths in Costa Rica to reforestation with pines and pollinators to the work CREW does to Save Species with Science, the Cincinnati Zoo contributes to conservation efforts far beyond our own backyard.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is bringing sustain-

ability to your own back yard!

This year, in partnership with Klosterman Bakery and led

byPollenNation,adedicatedgroupoftheZoo’shorticultural

the “Plant forPollinatorsChallenge.” InMarch2019,Pollen

their dreams while contributing to conservation efforts by

providing vital habitat for pollinators.

Initially, the Zoo set out with a lofty goal of registering 500

years of research by CREW’s Director

of Animal Research, Dr. Bill Swanson,

who produced the first (and until now

only)ocelotkitten fromAIwith frozen

semen at the Dallas Zoo in 1995. Since

then, CREW has improved its AI strate-

gies for felids by modifying protocols

for semen cryopreservation, ovarian

synchronization and laparoscopic

insemination.

Small cats, including the ocelot, have

received relatively little attention

compared to larger cat species, with

limited information available on their

ecology or conservation status in the

wild. Under CREW’s leadership, repro-

ductive sciences are playing a critical

role in helping address the conservation

and management challenges associated

with maintaining these imperiled small

cat species within zoos, and possibly in

the wild in future years.

Conservation Education Initiative Education has been a principle component of the Zoo’s mission for over 50 years. Each year the Zoo reaches more than 350,000 students and educators with program-ming built around the plants and animals that thrive on our 81-acre campus. From across the globe to our own backyards, the Zoo team knows that education and conservation are intimately intertwined. The Zoo participates in more than 30 different field conservation projects around the world and uses robust and sophis-ticated breeding programs to propagate species and preserve genetic biodiversity. Wildlife conservation isn’t just about saving eagles or tigers, it is also about protecting the natural systems that support human society. Conservation needs a bigger fan base, and zoos play the leading role in engaging the public with wildlife. Which is why our most important work is in public education, getting folks to care about animals and play a role in protecting their future.

are actively working to develop a pregnancy test based on a

conservation

singlefecalsample.OneofCREW’slatesteffortsinvolves

collecting tens of thousands of fecal samples from polar

bears in zoos across the United States and Canada, making

our Zoo the proud owner of the world’s largest polar bear

poop repository. In order to differentiate feces from mul-

tiple bears, non-toxic glitters and dyes are added into the

animals’ food, resulting in easily detected differences in the

samples collected.

Most people will never see a polar bear in the wild, but

approximately 181 million people visit zoos each year. Zoo

polar bears act as Arctic ambassadors for their wild cous-

ins, helping to communicate the messages of conservation

and climate change to broad audiences.

CREW: Polar Bears

Thanks to a $244,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), scientists from CREW will continue their work toward unlocking the secrets of polar bear reproduction. This IMLS award will allow CREW scientists to continue building the world’s first polar bear sperm bank; determine the age and factors influencing sexual maturity; and employ new technologies to develop a pregnancy test for this species. Ongoing learning about the reproductive physiology of this species leads to enhanced care for polar bears in human care. Additionally, insight gained from studying zoo bears may be applicable to their wild cousins.

We believe modeling sustainable practices is just as important as inspiring visitors with wildlife. That’s why we are working toward Net Zero Water, Waste and Energy by 2025. That means our Zoo plans to be the first zoo in the world to produce more power on its properties than it consumes; we will capture and recycle stormwater for 100% of our non-drinking water needs; and we will send zero waste to the landfill.

Paving the Way The Zoo’s commitment to net zero waste by 2025 includes

more solar on all properties, more rainwater collection, more

composting and less overall waste. Water conservation is

well underway with efforts yielding an 80% reduction of wa-

ter consumption, saving more than 1.5 billion gallons of water

andreducingtheZoo’senergyusage.Pairedwithsimpleac-

tions like upgrading light bulbs and installing a 1.6 megawatt

solar array in our parking lot, the Zoo staff is dedicated to le-

veraging every tactic available to lowering our footprint on

this earth by reducing our use of natural resources in our own

backyard.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden continues to educate students of all ages. From toddlers in Zoo Camp to young adults in Zoo Academy – the two-year college preparatory program located on Zoo grounds – and all the way to the adult wildlife enthusiasts young at heart, the Zoo continues to inspire and educate guests with wildlife every day.

The Cincinnati Zoo is always looking for ways to connect

our community and their families with wildlife and wild plac-

es. This is where Zoo Troop comes in. As one of the Cincinnati

Zoo’s top Education programs, Zoo Troop is not your typical

extracurricular activity. This four-week series teaches

children to understand and respect the world around them.

With age-appropriate classes for toddlers up through 8th

graders, the program is designed to develop curiosity, create

empathy, encourage healthy social skills, and grow self-

esteem – all while receiving a top-notch Zoo experience. Zoo

Troop aims to deliver these important life skills through

exploration,up-closeanimalencounters,andfun!Participants

are immersed in educational and wildlife-rich experiences

designed to target the growth stages and develop knowledge

and lifelong skills. Toddlers practice skills such as counting,

sharing, and making new friends, while 7th and 8th graders

practicetheirskills inscientificclassificationusingscientific

tools and observations. Zoo Troop is all about whole-child

development. While learning about wildlife, we challenge kids

towork together, be confident, get outside, problem solve,

and so much more! Kids and families look forward to seeing

each other week after week and many of the children leave

having made memories, bonds with their peers, and lifelong

friends. Zoo Troop is a unique functional environmental

education program that starts and sustains youth on their

journey toward developing the skills needed to become

productive, forward-thinking, action-oriented, ecology aware

citizens.
