and learning the ropes at YMCA Geelong. If you see Shona around be sure to stop and say hi.

Gemma Santilli: We would also like to say a sad farewell to gymnastics coach Gemma Santilli who will be leaving YMCA Geelong at the conclusion of 2013 to pursue a full time position at Western Health as an Occupational Therapist. Gemma has been instrumental in the success of the WAG level 1 - 3 programs at YMCA Geelong and we wish her all the best at her new job. YMCA Board News

In November the Annual General Meeting was held and welcomed one new member from the community into the Board, Sharon Jones. Sharon is Commercial Business Manager at Target Australia. When asked why did she want to join the board she replied “I’m looking to give back to my community”. Sharon’s skills will be most welcome on the Board and will assist the board in ensuring that YMCA Geelong deliver on our mission and vision.

At a similar time we also farewell Margot Stork who has been a Board Member for three years. Margot’s tireless energy was welcomed and assisted the Board with many strategic decisions during her time. We thank Margot and wish her well in the future.

YMCA Staff News

Colin Hunt: After 5 years as CEO of YMCA Geelong, Colin Hunt resigned in November. Colin had been involved in the capital works program at Camp Wyuna, the extension to the Newtown Stadium’s Mezzanine floor and the establishment of a partnership with the Golden Plains Shire which has seen the Y able to deliver programs to the broader Geelong community. He also oversaw the transition of Geelong Gymnastics Centre Co-op Ltd becoming part of the YMCA family two years ago. Colin is planning to have a well deserved break with his family before getting back into work in 2014. We thank Colin for his leadership and guidance and being part of the YMCA Geelong journey.

Shona Eland: Acting CEO, Shona Eland is filling his shoes in the interim till the recruitment process is completed in early 2014. We welcome Shona who has had more than 20 years experience in the Sport and Recreation Industry as a programmer, event manager, Sports development Officer and 15 years experience in management roles with YMCA Victoria. Shona is certainly enjoying meeting the participants, parents and coaches and staff from across our operations

Carpark RedevelopmentThanks for your patience during our progress of the Newtown Stadium Carpark Redevelopment. Many of our participants at Newtown Stadium will have noticed that safety fencing has now been erected and work has commenced on the earth works for the car park redevelopment project. The bulk of the earth works will be completed by the 20th of December, then a retaining wall will be erected before the final preparation prior to asphalting in late January. We will then need to do some landscaping works and line markings before we commence educating our customers on the one way traffic flow. We are grateful for the funding support from TAC, City of Greater Geelong and the Y Services Club who are assisting us in ensuring that we have a safe traffic management system at Newtown Stadium.

Y Service Club - Christmas Eve Carols - Can you lend a hand? For nearly 60 years the Y Service Cub has supported YMCA Geelong and the Geelong Community. Y Services clubs are worldwide service groups. They meet regularly both socially and formally at meetings and seek to assist YMCA Geelong with our programs for the community. In 2013 the Y Service Club contributed more than $11,000 to replace the lights in the Gymnasium at Newtown Stadium with LED lights and they are making a significant contribution to the car park re development project at Newtown. Now they need a hand and have asked YMCA Geelong members and participants from across our four locations if they could lend a hand to stage the 2013 Carols by Candlelight on Christmas Eve at Johnstone Park. They urgently need 15 people (over the age of 15 years) for 3 hours on Tuesday 24th December to assist the staging of the event. If you are able to assist it would be greatly appreciated.

Contact Club President Jaryd deBeer on 0405804586.

Y Service Club The Y Service Club is the quiet worker around the Y, Supporting the board, Staff and the members in many ways. Their most recent initiative has been the provision of L.E.D lights in Newtown Stadium, this means not only a reduction to our Carbon Footprint but also a significant cost saving both of which are ongoing benefits. The club celebrates 60 Years of service to the Y next April, a magnificent achievement. Club Meetings are held on Monday Evenings and visitors are most welcome. Contact Club President Jaryd deBeer on 0405804586 or Y staff who will provide you with more information.

YMCA All Abilities GymnasticsThe gymnasts from our All Abilities program had the opportunity to join in the YMCA Geelong Gymsafe Championships at the end of the month. The students had a lot of fun competing in the competition and really enjoyed the experience. We had a number of our gymnasts achieve a new skill or a new small achievement like jumping up onto a box unassisted for the first time during the competition, which was an extra bit of excitement for the coach and the children. The students were all excited about receiving their medals, certificates and ribbons, and are all looking forward to the next Gymsafe competition.

The All Abilities programs has grown over the past term with the gymnasts developing well in the program. All the gymnasts have achieved new skills and are enjoying the experience of gymnastics. In term one 2014 we are opening up more classes to cater for the growing program.

Children’s Week at YMCA GeelongAt YMCA Geelong we all let our inner children out to play during Children’s Week 2013 (19 - 27th Nov). After successfully applying for and receiving a Children’s week grant from the City of Greater Geelong, the Preschool Programs Team added 6 extra special Children’s Week classes to their week so that other children from the community and from local organisations (e.g. Northern Bay’s Karen Families, Mama Geelong’s Playgroup, and others) could come and participate free in our EdGym and our Little EdGym classes.

To our delight, all the classes were booked to capacity (about 70 participants). The responses from the children and the parent’s feedback was overwhelmingly positive and has been a fantastic way to promote our Preschool Programs. Some of our After-school recreational gymnastics, trampolining and competitive classes also got in the spirit of Children’s week with many a SuperHero seen jumping along the double mini and Tumble Track, lots of Crazy Hair on the beams, and even a blast from the past, with the 80’s coming back for the Adult Classes!!!

On Sunday the 27th of November, YMCA Geelong held a free Time to Move: Active Family Fun Day for the whole family to come and try different gymnastics programs, jump on the Jumping Castle and have fun being active together. Around 50 families took part and got to meet Bounce (GV’s sugar glider mascot) who made a special guest appearance to congratulate the winners of our first ever Children’s Week Colouring-In competition! The winner received a drawing set donated by Riot Art & Craft, and the runner up received a $100 voucher off the term fees to any of the Geelong YMCA’s recreational Gymnastics classes. All entries received a participation certificate and a few small goodies. Thanks to the City of Greater Geelong for providing us with the means to celebrate Children’s Week, as well as to all the Coaches and families who took part. It was a real celebration of “The Child” with loads of fun, activity and laughter in our gyms.

YMCA Judo Club2013 marked another very successful year for the YMCA Geelong Judo Club. We have had good numbers of participants in both the junior and senior classes. Last month at the Victorian State Titles, our club came away with 3 gold, a silver and bronze medals, well done to everyone who was there. We are also very proud to have 3 of our senior players, achieve the rank of 1st Dan and receive their black belts, well done to Regan Peart, Jess Dafter and Ashlee Bensted. After years of training and dedication they are all very deserving of this honour. Also well done to Jake Bensted on his recent third place at the World Cup in Samoa. From all our coaches we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year.

Scope EdGym programScope and YMCA Geelong partnered up together to provide 6 modified Edgym sessions for a group of 4 children with a variety of disabilities between the ages of 4 and 6 years who attend the Scope Early Intervention Program. The Physio and Occupational Therapist from Scope sat down with each family and assessed each child. Possible goals to work on in the EdGym Group were then discussed.

These goals were then incorporated into the lesson plans for the group over the 6 classes. Each child would then be reassessed after the group. The use of a Social Story describing the routines and the expectations of the EdGym group was constructed using Scope’s expertise. Parents received this to read with their children before the group started to allow the children to become familiar with the photos of the coaches and therapists as well as the set-up of the group to reduce anxiety. Continuing with the philosophy of Kindergym, the structure of the activities was play-based and props were used to enhance the theme of the class, e.g. Animals or Sport. In this way, the children’s listening, attention and communication skills could also be enhanced.

The structure of the group was adapted to make the most of the opportunity: the OT and Physio attended the sessions and contributed their ideas and suggestions, the parents/ carers of each child attended and participated, and the activities were modified to suit each of the individual children’s varying abilities and needs from week to week, allowing for lots of practise and repetition. Key word signs and some picture cards were used to enhance communication throughout the group.

It was truly amazing to see the joy and fun experienced by the children and their parents when attempting the activities and succeeding in their attempts, as well as to see their significant improvements in attention, familiarity with the routines, strength, tone, co-ordination and balance over the 6 weeks of the program. The parents commented how much they had enjoyed seeing the fun their children were having in being active and how surprised they were in what their children were able to do in a supportive and motivating environment. An unexpected but inspiring, development occurred when two of the girls who attended, made good friends with each other after 4 weeks, showing us their developing social skills and empathy. This illustrates how this experience has had positive outcomes for each of the children’s physical abilities as well as for their emotional and social development.

Following on from the success of this group and the rapid growth of the other school-aged All Abilities groups at North Geelong, a new All Abilities EdGym group will be running for preschool children with additional support needs from term 1 at YMCA Geelong (Newtown Stadium). Please contact Reception on 5223 2714 to indicate your interest or email Ingrid on [email protected].

The YMCA also offers school aged and adult All Abilities classes at North Geelong on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Please contact Kerri MacDonald for more information on these classes on 5277 9364 or [email protected].

YMCA Camp Wyuna Staff Profile - Glenn AndrewGlenn is now in week three of his new catering coordinator role at Camp Wyuna. He’s been thrown completely in the deep end at this busy time of year but appears to be floating! We’re impressed how calmly and capably he approaches the challenges thrown at him. He lives in Indented Head with his wife and two daughters and is a mad-keen fisherman and sportsman. Andrew Kidd is enjoying having someone around who cares as much as he does about the cricket. Glenn’s family did the ‘sea change’ about five years ago from Point Cook, where he was running his own gardening business (he thought he’d move to the coast for a relaxed lifestyle – hah!). His training is as a pastry cook and recent work history includes five years as Area Manager for Tiptop.

YMCA Bannockburn Rec - Ready for GymnasticsEd gym and Intro gym have kicked off in Term Four at Bannockburn Community Sport Stadium after a lot of community feedback. It’s pleasing to be able to provide services and programs that help community develop healthy and happy children.

Tell your friends, we’d love to see them on Saturday mornings at Bannockburn!
