Christmas Ornaments By Deb Yedziniak

It's time to make use of some of those beautiful built-in decorative stitches and leftover fabric scraps to create these pretty little ornaments. You don't need much fabric! Each ornament takes just four pieces of 4" x 6" fabric. Embellish two pieces of fabric and combine with two pieces of solid color fabric, or embellish all four panels. The choice is yours. Be creative and have fun!

Sewing Supplies: • Any PFAFF® sewing machine with a variety of decorative stitches

• 2A and/or 8 foot

• ¼" Quilting foot with IDT™ system (820926096)

• Clear Open Toe foot for IDT™ system (820916096)

• INSPIRA® Fusible No-Show Mesh stabilizer (620112096)

• Optional: lightweight fusible quilt batting

• Four fabric pieces 4" x 6" per ornament (or one piece 16" x 6")

• One 6" piece of small twisted cording for hanging the ornament

• Fiber fill

• Sewing thread to match the fabric for the bobbin and for construction

• 40 wt. decorative thread for decorative stitching

• INSPIRA® 80/12 universal needle

• Optional: hot fix crystals or beads to accent the stitching

Cut: From Fabric A: Cut two pieces fabric 4" x 6" for decorative stitching

From Fabric B: Cut two pieces of contrast color fabric 4" x 6"

From Fabric C: From Fusible No-Show mesh or light weight batting cut 4 pieces 4" x 6"

Prepare: Depending on the weight of the fabric, fuse the No-Show mesh or a lightweight fusible batting to add body and stability to the fabric. Decorative Sewing and Construction: 1. Thread the machine with a 40 wt. embroidery

thread to compliment the fabric color. Use normal sewing thread in the bobbin to match the fabric color.

2. Select among the variety of decorative stitches on your machine. Snap-on the foot recommended by your machine, or use the Open Toe foot.

3. Embellish 2 pieces of the fabric by sewing a decorative stitch down the center of the fabric. Repeat the same stitching or do a variety of stitches.

4. After the stitching is done, give the fabric a quick press. 5. Lay the petal template on the embellished fabric and the plain fabric and cut out the

petal shape so that you have four petal pieces. 6. Snap-on the ¼” Quilting foot. With a scant ¼” seam allowance, sew three of the

petals right sides together, alternating the fabrics. 7. Before sewing the fourth petal, take and fold the cording in half and place it in the

center of the 3 sewn petals so that the cording ends extend about 1/2" beyond the upper edge of the top or tip of the petals. Place the fourth petal in position and first sew a short seam across the top/tip of the petals in order to catch the cording. Continue to sew down the side, stopping about midway in order to leave an opening to turn the ornament right sides out. Then sew a short half inch seam from the bottom up in order to catch all four of the petals at the lower pointed edge.

8. Turn the ornament right sides out. Use your fingers to push out and shape the soft curves of the petal shape. Lightly press the seam edge if desired. Stuff with fiber fill and use a whip stich to close the opening.

Other Notes: • Depending on the weight of the fabric I like to add extra body to the fabric by

applying either a fusible No-Show mesh or fusible lightweight batting. This helps to avoid the fabric stretching due to the curve of the cut and also adds stabilization for the decorative stitching.

• Use a scrap piece of fabric to test sew different combinations of stitches and threads. This is an opportunity to have fun playing with all the decorative stitches on your sewing machine. Remember that you can alter the look of a stitch by increasing and decreasing the length and width of a stitch.

• For further embellishment add beads or hot fix crystals to the stitching.
