Sunday, November 23

A Promising Venture: Shaker Objects in the Index of American Design

Paul Schweizer, Director Emeritus, Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute’s Museum of Art

Paul Schweizer, art historian, will discuss how Cole took the old master idiom of history painting and put it in the form of American landscape to create his most iconic series, the Voyage of Life.

•Schweizer will be available to sign copies of his new book Thomas Cole’s Voyage of Life.

Lesley Herzberg, Curator of Collections, Hancock Shaker Village

Produced between 1935 and 1942, the Index is a visual archive of American decorative arts that reflects the expanding interest in our nation’s material culture. Herzberg will illuminate the unique design characteristics of the Index’s Shaker Portfolio and how accompanying photographs created a record for their context.

This lecture is co-sponsored by Partners for Albany Stories (PASt).

Matthew J. Kirk, Principal Investigator/Cultural Resource Specialist, Hartgen Archeological Associates

Recent excavations revealed outbuildings at Ten Broeck Mansion used as kitchens or slave quarters similar to those found at prominent residences in the south. By mixing archaelogy and history, these findings provide insight into slave/master relationships and suggest we reconsider our modern concepts of slavery in the north at the end of the eighteenth century.

This lecture is co-sponsored by Partners for Albany Stories (PASt).

The Making It American lecture series takes a broad look at what art, artifacts, objects, manuscripts, and other primary source materials can teach us about the development of American history, culture, the arts,

and our national identity. Invited scholars create presentations that analyze the construct of American values and ideals that make our collections and exhibitions accessible.

Supported by a grant from the New York Council

for the Humanities

All lectures are from 2–3PM, FREE with museum admission.

• The Art of Seating: Two Hundred Years of American Design organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville, Florida, presents a survey of exceptional American chair design from the early 19th century to the present day.

• Each of the more than 40 chairs in the exhibition was chosen for its beauty and historical context with important social, economic, political and cultural influences.

• Selections from the Jacobsen

Collection of American Art are joined by contemporary designs offering a stylistic journey in furniture with showstoppers by John Henry Belter, George Hunzinger, Herter Brothers, Stickley Brothers, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Isamu Noguchi, and Frank Gehry, among others.

• The exhibition not only allows the viewer to see readily recognizable pieces alongside those rarely seen by the public, but also takes the viewer into the design studio through patent drawings, documented upholstery, artist renderings and multimedia presentations.

• Chairs tell the history of modern design: Aesthetic trends, the emergence of new technologies, ergonomics, social and cultural developments are all reflected in the evolution of chair design.

• The chairs selected for The Art of Seating are much more than simple pieces of furniture. These works of art have compelling stories to tell about our national history, the evolution of American design, and incredible artistry and craftsmanship.
