Fifth Sunday of Easter May 19, 2019
St. Matthias Church, 1582 Ferris Road, Columbus OH 43224 1
Parish Office PASTORAL POST
Written by Fr. Tony
This past January, it was announced that Bishop Robert J. Brennan would be the new bishop of Columbus. He was formally installed on Friday, March 29, 2019. So far, he has been very visible and I even happened to run into him a month after his arrival at the OSU Newman Center as he randomly joined a few other priests to hear confessions. As bishop of Columbus, he is the new face of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The appeal officially ‘kicked-off’ the weekend of May 4-5, but due to First Communion and Mother’s Day Weekend, we at St. Matthias will have our own ‘kick-off’ this weekend. While we may get frustrated being part of an institutionalized Church that has so many regulations and procedures (or lack thereof in light of the recent abuse scandals), being Catholic is a blessing. It is a blessing to belong to a Church wider than our own parish. Vatican II emphasized the importance of the ‘local Church.’ By local Church, they did not mean the parish. They meant the Diocese. We should try to do our part to further the mission of the 23 counties of the Diocese of Columbus. I encourage all of you to consider taking an envelope from the pews or vestibule within the next few weeks. Completed envelopes may be placed in the collection basket or dropped off at the Parish Offices. This appeal is by no means required or forced, simply offered. While our total gift from the parish has been low in previous years, the parishioners that do choose to give have given a lot. Last year we had 89 donors giving a total of $17,851. Thank you to all those who gave in 2018! Our 2019 goal is $70,299.63. May we use this opportunity to show our connection to the Diocese of Columbus and as our warm welcome to our new bishop.
STEWARDSHIP MEDITATION
“…do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” (John 14:27)
Our limited human understanding cannot begin to understand the immense
power of God. Instead of trusting in God, we think we can control every
outcome. Do you want to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans. The next time
worry, anxiety or fear creeps in, thank God for all He has given you and trust
that He has a better plan for you.
