Purposes of designing the courseappreciate > compare > criticize

•Students are aimed to develop abilities to appreciate Chinese musical cultures.

•In addition, students will be introduced to pertinent issues and processes of Chinese music (including cultural modernization, globalization, gender and sexuality, and concepts of musical authenticity and revival).

•Furthermore, students are encouraged to criticize cultural issues of Chinese music in global perspective by the comparison among different musical cultures.

After the course, you can Recognize the representative Chinese musical instruments, their characteristics and typical works.

Distinguish the different categories of Chinese music and their styles.

Describe the development of Chinese music in terms of the content and context of society, history and culture.

Compare Chinese traditional music with its modern form as well as Western musical cultures around the world in terms of content, form, national identity and aesthetic pursuit.
