AUTUMN IS IRELAND’S NATURAL TIME FOR STORIES. WHETHER IT’S MAKING UP YOUR OWN, EXPLORING WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE OR DELVING INTO IRELAND’S HISTORIC PAST ; WE THINK THAT THERE’S REALLY SOMETHING FOR EVERY TASTE AND AGE GROUP IN THIS SEASON’S CHILDREN’S ART IN LIBRARIES PROGRAMME.

Twelve artists have been commissioned to create and deliver ten very different programmes that any child who lives in the City will have the opportunity to access.

School groups will have the opportunity to experience the inspirational story of female outlaw, pirate and heroine, Gráinne Mhaol, as they embark on a storytelling adventure that charts some of her most notorious adventures.

The six to eight year old age group will be given the chance to improvise through words and music as part of Wo-Mu, our music programme specifically designed for the library context. Across the city another group will be exploring just exactly Where those Wild Things are, creating their own unique 3 dimensional puppet heads in the process.

Older children will have the opportunity to Create a Character from Page to Stage by working with theatre-maker Michelle Read, using elements of drama to create their own short plays. If storytelling is more your thing, well then, children’s Illustrator Adrienne Geoghegan is on hand to guide you through the creative process of making your own book.

In the lead up to and during Science Week this year we are delighted to introduce an Art and Science strand to your programme, with the kind support of The Arts Council. Children will be encouraged to explore the eco-systems that grow in urban areas under the guidance of artist Sinéad Carey; while how and why we communicate will be explored in Communication Stations, focusing on sending and receiving signals, messages and information. Finally, those interested in exploring the intriguing concepts of time and space travel can participate in exciting creative workshops with artist Kitty Rogers.

So whether you’re an artist, scientist or storyteller, we think you’ll find something that will be of interest to you in this Autumn’s Children’s Art in Libraries Programme!

FINDING THE WILD THINGS with Artist Bethan Parkes

Age Group: 6–9 year olds

The night Max wore his wolf suits and made mischief of one kind and another, his Mother called him a Wild Thing ...

Drawing inspiration from this classic story, children will be encouraged to create their very own unique Wild Thing bringing him/her to life in the form of a 3D head or puppet and developing their own unique creative flair in the process.

Finding the Wild Things will take place in Ballyfermot Library from Saturday 28th September – Saturday 19th October at 2.00pm – 3.30pm.

Children are also encouraged to bring their own instruments if they are learning already, although no previous musical experience is necessary for full participation.

Age Group: 10-12 year olds

Characters are everywhere! In books, films, in plays, in our favourite TV soaps! But how is a character born? And how do you make one up and breathe life into him or her?

Creating a Character from Page to Stage is a short creative writing course which answers those very questions. During four weekly sessions participating children will make up characters, develop stories for them and by the end of the process, write and perform a character monologue. Each session, led by award winning Theatre maker Michelle Read, uses creative writing exercises and drama games to guide children through a highly imaginative exploration of character construction and storytelling.

I CAN MAKE MY OWN BOOK! with artist Adrienne Geoghegan

Age Group: 7-10 year olds

When is the last time you made a book of your own? Wrote the story? Drew the characters? Set the scene? Started one, but didn’t finish it? Made one and loved it? Or NEVER tried it?

Well, whatever start you did or didn’t make, author and illustrator Adrienne Geoghegan, of Visual Art Boot Camps, will take you on a four week book–making journey of discovery! Over four weeks Adrienne will examine the basics of book and character development. Each week children will learn the step-by-step process of creating their own unique, one-off story in words and pictures. Each child will discover the secrets of brainstorming, unravel the mystery of character development, break down the narrative (story) into scenes, create storyboards, and build confidence in using a variety of mediums; from collage to paint, oil pastel to pencils. Then finally each participant will write his or her story!

I can make my own book! will take place in Pembroke Library from 11.00am – 12.30pm on Saturday 28th September – Saturday 19th October.

SENSORY STORIES with artist Yvonne Cullivan

Age Group: 8–11 year olds

How many different ways can you explore a story? Have you ever thought about exploring a story through sound, touch or maybe even smell! And what are the different ways that you can retell stories? This will be storytelling, but not as you know it!

Page 9: CHILDREN'S ART IN LIBRARIES

Over four weeks children will work with artist Yvonne Cullivan to produce a collection of multi-media stories. These stories may be invented by participants or based on a story from memory or maybe it’s just someone’s favourite. Each story will be broken down, keeping the senses in mind, and then recreated through a number of hand-made objects. Children will have the opportunity to experience creative writing, drawing, cut-out, collage, collected materials, audio recording, and construction in the creation of their own unique story. The objects that are made will then connect together and retell a story that appeals to all of our senses.

Sensory Stories will take place in Pearse Street Library from 3.30pm – 5.0pm on Monday 30th September – Monday 21st October.
