French Club: French Club members began 2016 learning about traditional French pastries and tasting a Galette des Rois – an almond puff pastry cake made by Madame Blanchard. The students also watched videos on how to make crepes and chocolate mousse – which they will be making in the near future! French Club meets weekly on Wednesdays after school and is open to all students (6th – 8th) who are interested in learning about the Francophone culture. Activities this semester will include cooking, playing French games, watching a French movie, making French buttons, learning about Haiti, and making a large art mural for the front showcase. PARENTS: We are short on snack supplies. Ask your student for the list of ideas and where to buy them.

Merci!! Madame Blanchard

The Best ME

I am COLORFUL. Like a rainbow in the sky, I stand bright and I try to be the most outstanding and colorful person until I die. I am ENTHUSIASTIC. Like the stars in the night, I talk to everyone in sight. When I sit in the dark, I glow as the light.

I am SMART. In school I succeed, On group projects, I lead. Whatever the limit, if I can, I exceed. I am MUSICAL. The violin I play, I practice piano every day. I create and develop music and a musician I will stay.

And if I believe, and I hope you agree, I can be the best ME I ever can be.

The Cherokee Student Council's service project is to sponsor a fundraiser program, Olive Garden’s "Pasta for Pennies", that benefits the Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Because of our successful fundraising past, Cherokee was named by the National Office of the LLS as a Mission Maker! This is an elite group of schools from every

state in the country. Congratulations, Cherokee! The LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and

providing education and patient services. LLS exists to find cures and ensures

access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

Each day pennies (nickels, dimes, quarters, currency, and checks) will be collected and tallied in home bases. The winning home base will earn a free

luncheon from the Olive Garden. If Cherokee raises $1,000 above last year’s total, the second place classroom will receive a free ‘surprise’ luncheon.

The program at Cherokee will run for three weeks during the months of

February/March. Donations can be made online and assigned to your child's home base. Very soon you will find more information and links on the

Cherokee Heights Middle School web site.

We look forward to a very successful fundraising effort put forth by our Cherokee community! Student council is challenging everyone to reach out to friends and

relatives covering all 50 states.

Please contact Marj Kutsche (204-1271) or [email protected] if you

are interested in assisting with this project or if you have questions.

Music Notes

The 2015-16 Winter Concert season was a great success! Music ranging from Pachelbel and Beethoven to Stevie Wonder and Kendrick Lamar rang through the halls of Cherokee and wowed huge audiences in the gym. These experiences have infused energy into the music department and will propel us forward as we begin work for our spring concerts. Moving forward, we not only hope students will grow in their skills and musical knowledge, but also increase their understanding of the world, using music to guide them along the way. We look forward to all this semester will bring! Please mark your calendars now for our spring concerts at 7:00 p.m. on the following dates:

Wednesday, May 18, 2016 – 8th Grade Thursday, May 26, 2016 – 7th Grade Thursday, June 2, 2016 – 6th Grade

Students looking for additional musical experiences and performance opportunities are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Solo & Ensemble Festival on April 2, 2016 at LaFollette High School. This is an opportunity for students to learn a solo work for their instrument or voice or work in a small group to prepare a piece of music. These events are not like some of the music competitions that one might see on television or other media where harsh comments are given to contestants, but rather this event is a very positive and enriching experience. Solo & Ensemble Festivals are intended to encourage musical growth, provide inspiration for further study, and give students an opportunity to perform on their own or in a small group. Interested students should speak to their music teacher soon to select music and begin working. Registration forms are available from any music teacher and must be submitted by March 4, 2016. We hope to see many students and families there! After-school band lessons are back! Lessons run February 9th-April 28th. These lessons are current band class students. Those not in band, but interested in participating, must have a parent-teacher-student conference with Ms. Riley to determine eligibility. Please contact Ms. Riley at [email protected] with any questions. The lesson schedule is as follows:

Parent-Teacher Organization A Parent-Teacher Organization is a group of guardians, teachers, administrators, and staff working together for the betterment of children. As a guardian of a teen at Cherokee Middle School, you are automatically a member of the organization. One of the KEY elements of the organization, which guarantees success, is parent involvement. Research shows that “students with parents who get involved tend to achieve higher test scores, have more positive attitudes and behaviors, and that the schools they operated in were successful and effective”. Please volunteer to be a member of the Cherokee Middle School PTO for Cougar success.
