FIRST ASSIGNMENT: PECHA KUCHA

Our first assignment was to create a 20-slide presentation with each slide representing something special about us. We used the slides to show what we value, how we got here and what inspires us. I was looking forward to this assignment because I enjoy talking about what I am influenced by and I enjoy hearing what other people have to say as well. This assignment was a good way to start off the year to learn about everyone. When I began think-ing about my topic for thesis I looked back on the past assignments of the semester and this one stuck out to me. Each student spoke about what their influence was and I have always been really interested and inspired by that. I reflected on all different parts of my life from my family to high school and food. I think a lot of my background has influenced my life and why certain things inspire me. This assignment was enjoyable for me because I was able

to talk about all sorts of aspects on my life and influence.

THIRD ASSIGNMENT: 20 TOPIC IDEAS

Our third assignment was focusing on 20 topics we would be interested in doing our thesis on. At first I found the assignment to be a real challenge then I began to get really into it. I first started with some topics that popped right into my mind, a few ideas bounced off the list and then I got a little stuck. Before I go to bed I lay around thinking about work and the days ahead. I usually have a few last minute ideas for new assignments as well. I began making a list on my iPhone so when I thought of new ideas I could add them to my list. Early on I began to see some connections between different ideas and I started thinking further about a deeper topic. I also used my original pecha kucha to get some inspiration as well.

I found this assignment to be really helpful and it pushed me to think further.

FORTH ASSIGNMENT: THREE MIND MAPS

Once I made my 3 mind maps I looked over all the ideas. I couldn’t decide which idea I valued the most, but I couldn’t decide. Each idea were so important to me I had in mind and I saw an underlining theme. These 3 topics are what influence my everyday life. I love food, pop culture and my friends. After looking over these maps they all had a similar connection. The maps were my influence and one of them was about my friends. I wanted to develop my thesis on my friends and their influence. I broke down the word influence on a mind map and took it in all different directions. I broke down all different categories of influence, from childhood, food, and media. The mind map expanded really quickly and more connections were made. The map right now is very broad because it is covering a large topic of influence. I know am going to need to work on breaking the idea

down and developing a deeper idea.

SIXTH ASSIGNMENT – 5X5: JOHN HUGHES

When I was 12 years old my mom and I watched John Hughes’ 1985 classic The Breakfast Club. When the movie was over I could not believe it. I loved every minute of the movie. For the first time I felt I discovered a movie that I could really relate to and understand. Each character was so different but the viewer could relate to each character in some way. After I saw the movie I began to explore all of his films and I became obsessed. After I discovered all of these films I began exploring all of the characters and themes. These high school movies were so groundbreaking because these characters walked the halls of your high school. Not one of them was perfect and they all had something special about them. I created this connector to show all the different types of characters he created and all the different traits they had. Not one character was the same but anyone could relate to one. That is what made his movies

so special and why they made such an impact on my life.

SIXTH ASSIGNMENT– 5X5: WISCONSIN

Two weekends ago I went and visited one of my best friends at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. I have visited once before and I had such a great time. What is so different there is that the town revolves around this college. Since I go to school in the city, our lives don’t revolve around a football team or Parsons. When I go to visit I use it as an escape from my regular life and have a break from the city. The whole city is influence by the football team. The town shut downs during the game because they all get ready for the game at a 9am pre-game and a tailgate at the frat houses. These traditions are weekly events for the students. I found it really interesting seeing my friends get so crazy and them going crazy for me being there. The whole weekend was a great experience and I can only visit once a year because it gets so crazy. I love going though because seeing these events is fun and

everyone around me influences me.

SIXTH ASSIGNMENT– 5X5: SCENT

For one of my experiments I wanted to study what some nostalgic food means to people. I find it so interesting when a memory triggers in my mind from a specific smell. I wanted to create an experiment by blindfolding people and giving them specific smells. They would describe what it smells like or what the smell is. After they would share a memory or use descriptive words about the food. It was interesting hearing what everyone had to say and a lot of people said similar things for each food. After the results I listened to all the recordings and took notes on the best comments. I then made a collage of all the descriptive words they said. I found it really interesting hearing what people had to say about each food and what food

influences specific memories.

SIXTH ASSIGNMENT– 5X5: INTERVIEW

My friends have always influenced me. I love hearing what they are interested in and I can talk about anything for hours. I have felt really comfortable with people and I been known to be easy to talk to. One of my favorite things is to learn interesting facts about people. From learning things they love and what really inspires them. I made a 1-minute video asking a few friends one question. What are you influenced by? Each person shared a list of things that came to the top of their mind. Some spoke for over a minute some spoke for 15 seconds. I loved hearing what everyone had to say and I could have kept talking. I made a short film with the various interviews intertwined with each other. I tried to put the similar answers together to create some mini themes. the video came out really fun and I

would love to continue with this concept.

Page 11: Chelsea Baken Thesis Process Book

SIXTH ASSIGNMENT– 5X5: OBJECTS

I think a person’s home reflects a lot on what they are influenced by and their personal design. A person’s home is the most personal because it is their space and they are able to display their interests in any way. They objects people display in their homes reflect the things they value the most. The objects on the shelves show what they like and what is important. I went to a few rooms and photographed their belongings around their bedrooms. I think their rooms reflect a similar look to their personality and their design aesthetic. Throughout the room I can see specific items from the past or things they admire. These items show a

lot about their personality and their interests.

Page 14: Chelsea Baken Thesis Process Book

FINAL CONCEPT The students at Parsons are considered young, creative and unique people. In the beginning of design school, students learn to give helpful advice and feedback to one another. This process helps build a technique and a style for each student. Over time, students learn to find their own voice in their design field. From their experiences growing up to their life at Parsons, these design students are full of interesting pieces of information,

Students both influence and inspire one another. It is interesting to learn random facts and history about friends and colleagues. For my thesis project, I will be conducting interviews with students at Parsons discussing their personal history, design aesthetic, and their relationship with their objects. When this information is brought together, a viewer can easily learn a few interesting facts about a person. Hopefully a viewer would be inspired by some of the things the person has said. As much as someone might know about their personal friends and other students at Parsons, there are certain pieces of information they might not know making it interesting to find out.

This project started with learning about my own and other people’s influences. After conducting multiple experimental projects, the documentation of peoples objects and a 1-minute video asking Parsons students what they were influenced by impacted viewers the most. Bringing these two projects together created a strong and interesting project. Not only would the interview be about their design aesthetic, and personal influence but also their objects and space. A person’s space can reflect a lot about them from the objects on display to the way it is designed.

The concept is to ask Parsons students 13 questions and then listing of 22 favorite items. The very last question asked is about three of their most favorite objects and what they mean to them. The objects will be photographed and displayed next to the interview in a printed book. The book concept would be a way to hold all the interviews together for reference and to document the students during their time at Parsons. Their three objects would also represent in a visual way.

As of now, there are two different possibilities for executing the interviews. Concept 1 is to go to the student’s home and interview them in their own personal space. This inside look will show each person in their own space and how their room is a reflection of their style and design aesthetic. While there, I could photograph the 3 objects that help represent them, which would live in the interview book. For this concept, materials needed include a video camera, a regular camera, a microphone, and lights. This process would be a little difficult because I would need to travel to each person’s home and set up a space. As I am only one person, this would be a more difficult process. Also, some people may find it to be a burden to have this entire set up in their personal home. As much as this concept may be difficult, the results can be really interesting.

Concept 2 would be to set up a space where every interview would take place by renting a studio in the Parsons building and create a set-up each weekend. People would sit in front of a backdrop and the interview would be focused on just them and their answers. This concept would be a much easier process to execute and would have a more consistent look. However, this video won’t show at much personality or their personal space. I would either need them to bring their objects with them or they could email me the three images of their objects.

As of right now, the book has a clean look. The intended dimensions are around 10” x 20”. One page has the typed up interview and a photo. The other page has the images of the objects with the information about them underneath. The book is a nice way to keep record of all the conversations. In addition to the book and video, a website will be created. It will showcase the videos interviews conducted. There will be three columns of videos, one for each student interviwed, with an infinite scroll feature. Selecting a video will cause the video to pop up and play. Other information includes name of student and major. During the Senior Thesis fair, visitors can look over the interviews as well as check out the website.

Not only are the interviews entertaining, but interviewees can also use the interview for their own purposes. The questions are all positive and the viewer can learn a lot about the person from watching. Interviewed students can use their video as a link on their personal website to help promote their style and aesthetic in a way different than their work and resume can. This website can also help keep people in contact, as watching these videos can help promote each other and keep students linked.

This project is not to prove any big question or to help improve an issue. This project is about learning new things about the people we have come to know so well in the past four years. Much like a time capsule, this video also documents what the students of Parsons were like during this time. The video, book, and website will capture a small piece of time including Parsons students and their interests.

Page 15: Chelsea Baken Thesis Process Book

After the midterm I began thinking about where I wanted to go with my ideas. During the thesis fair I interviewed around 10 people and I thought about making this a more solid concept. I thought about what my questions were mainly focused on and I began to

creating more questions and a theme.I took inspiration from interviewers such as Barbra Walters, James Lipton and Vanity Fair’s Proust. Each of these people have different styles and I took some inspiration from all. Proust uses the same questions every time and when I read them each issue I don’t get tired of them. Walters talks to the celebrities inside their homes for a more

personal feel. There are also websites such as The Selby and The Coveteur. The sites document peoples homes interior and personal objects. I love looking at what people have in their homes and how they reflect themselves in

their home.I want to create a book of interviews that covers parts of their influence, objects and

personal facts.

After my first prototype and group discussion. We all came up with a new concept, to film all the interviews and create a website that displays them all. The website can be viewed by all the students to see everyones answers. The concept was first about being influenced by friends and

this website can take it even further. I would create the website to display all the videos to inspire each other and to keep further connections with each student. For the thesis fair I

would also create a book documenting all the interviews as well.

After my first two concepts, I decided to interview two different peo-ples with different filming styles. I asked them 40 questions as well as the rapid fire. After I finished the interviews I realized they were far to long and the video would become un-interesting. I edited the list down to 13 questions and I have the 22 favorite topics. I redesigned the book style and edited the two videos as well. I did two different styles to see which concept I enjoy better. Once I get feedback from

the class I can see which route may be the more effective one.
