The summer season here and the Chautauqua waters are just starting to wind down. You can sense this as you cruise down the lake and feel a certain crispness in the morning air. It’s a sign – a sign of the wonderful change coming very soon, whether you’re ready for it or not. As for me, I just love the on-set of autumn in the Southern Tier. Everyone will continue the summer traditions of golfing, boating, and relaxing with a good glass of wine while watching the glorious sunsets. But late August can bring cool mornings and cooler nights – “great sleeping weather”, my mother always says. Short sleeves and shorts give way to sweaters and jeans. And the summer hustle and

bustle, (it’s such a short season – we simply must cram in as much fun as we possibly can), starts to sputter a bit, largely evident during the quiet weekdays. It’s truly one of my favorite times of the year – this “shoulder-time” between summer and fall. Well, the change in seasons is inevitable, but we’ll scarcely have time to notice – there’s still sometime left of fun in the sun, and I’m planning on taking every advantage of living in such a wonderful place. So, dear readers – keep an eye on the horizon but live for today and tomorrow. With a happy, upbeat attitude, you just never know – something really great is undoubtedly in store for you! Until next week… JZ

Song,” “Dreamer,” “Take the Long Way Home,” “Breakfast in America,” “It’s Raining Again,” “School,” “Fools Overture” and so many others that have become the soundtrack of our lives. Roger’s trademark way of setting beautiful introspective

lyrics to upbeat melodies resonated and found its way into the hearts and minds of people from cultures around the world. Roger Hodgson has been headlining in Canada, Europe, Australia and Asia, and now brings all the iconic Supertramp hits to the Amphitheater. Supertramp became a worldwide phenomenon in the 1970s and 1980s selling over 60 million albums. Their album “Breakfast in America” become one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Great music, great performer and great memories! His songs have remarkably stood the test of time and earned Roger and Supertramp an adoring worldwide following. Roger Hodgson will be at the Chautauqua Amphitheater August 25. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at chqtickets.com or by calling 716-357-6250. For more information visit ciweb.org. This event is sponsored by Curtze.

Roger continues to compose music and write lyrics and has over 60 unreleased songs, some of which he plans to record when the time is right. He compares his writing process to an artist painting a picture, keeping it close to his heart until the picture is complete before he shares it with the world. August 25 he will be at the Amphitheater.

Pam Tillis In Bemus Sept. 1CMA Femal Vocalist of the Year Closes Season for Floating Stage

Join us for the event of the summer! The full symphonic Bemus Bay pops orchestra, under the Direction of John Marcellus and featuring Steve Swanson, and the Chautauqua Lake Idol winner will bring the season to a close with an incredible musical finale that can only be described as magical and world class. Direct from Nashville - CMA Female Vocalist of the Year PAM TILLIS - will perform her amazing award winning show with the Bemus Bay Pops Symphony! A child of Music City royalty and a former rebel, she was determined to find her own way as a singer and songwriter — and she succeeded. A CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, she has written songs for some of the top singers in and beyond Nashville, including more than a few of her

own hits. The rollicking reverence she brings to “Band in the Window,” the affection that radiates on “Life Sure Has Changed Us Around,” the goofball humor of “Crazy By Myself,” the insight of her recitation on “Bettin’ Money on Love”: All of the up-tempo moments on Rhinestoned emit a sense of freedom that’s impossible for Pam to suppress or for any listener to miss. Let’s not forget. The winner of Shults Auto Group’s Car On The Barge Raffle will be presented their 2013 Ford Mustang or $30,000 cash at this event. Rain date Sunday, September 2 - 6:30PM A Fireworks display will conclude the evening. You do not want to miss out on this great evening. It is taking place September 1 on the Floating Stage in Bemus Point.

CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Pam Tillis, will perform her amazing award winning show with the Bemus Bay Pops Symphony on September 1 on the Floating Stage in Bemus. This Special Event - Labor Day Finale will wrap up the season with a bang. Literally, fireworks will take place after the show.

Local music fans will once again descend upon downtown Jamestown to show their support for music and arts education in Chautauqua County. The ninth annual Local Music Showcase (LMS) is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 8 at nine participating venues with all proceeds once again going to Infinity Visual and Performing Arts. “LMS is our biggest fundraiser of the year, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to support instruction costs at Infinity,” explains Infinity Executive Director Shane Hawkins. Hawkins adds that each year LMS is only made possible through collaboration between local businesses, musicians and volunteers. “This event would not be possible without the support of the local venues, business owners, local musicians, sound technicians and the team of over 50 volunteers that donate their time each year to make this event possible.” she says. “All of the nine participating venues this year and many of the performers and volunteers have been strong supporters of LMS every year. It’s a wonderful community effort to support arts education and local music, and a terrific night of local entertainment.” Because LMS is the programs single biggest fundraiser of the year, support from the entire community is crucial, especially with repeated and wide spread funding cuts to arts and youth programs the past few years. “It’s important that the community understand that much of our program relies on donations and fundraising

The Honduras Rock-A-Thon is Monday, September 3rd from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Bemus Point, NY at the Hotel Lenhart porch. the porch of the Lenhart. The teams find sponsors for their chair, and those teams who earn $100 or more, get a t-shirt for the captain of their team. The best part of the day is relaxing with old and new friends while raising money for this worthy cause. The Honduras Mission Project is almost 20 years old, and teams have gone to this village for the last 13 years, and are in the process of planning a mission trip for October of 2012. Over 100 people have participated in the mission, working with these children and families over the years, and have built buildings, hired staff and teachers, put on Bible Day Camp, brought medical and dental brigades, encouraged other churches to sponsor their own mission trips, and so much more. Join us on Monday, September

3rd at the porch of the Hotel Lenhart, rock with us, or sponsor one of the rockers who will be raising money for this project. There will be baskets to raffle, and other ways you can help, or just learn more about the mission. water for 1 min.)1 c. unseasoned bread crumbs

PreParaTioN: Cook the rice for 15 minutes in boiling water. During the cooking process, add salt and turmeric. Remove from the stove, drain off the cooking water, and transfer the rice to a large bowl. In a small frying pan, on medium high heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil together with the ground sirloin. Stir well until the meat is browned. Add the cooked meat to the rice. Then, add oregano, basil, orange

zest, egg, peas and cheese. Mix all the ingredients well. In the making of rice balls, the number 1 rule is to always keep your hands moist while forming the balls. Place a spoonful of rice mixture into the palm of your hand. Using both hands, form a rice ball to any size you prefer. Immediately roll the rice balls in the bread crumbs and set aside. In a large nonstick frying pan, on medium heat, add the olive oil. When the oil is hot, very carefully arrange the breaded rice balls in the frying pan. Cook and turn gently until they are golden brown. Using a wire mesh ladle, transfer them over to paper towels to absorb the excess oil. Serve hot or at room temperature. Note: This recipe is a substitute for the traditional rice balls and is less difficult to make. This recipe is taken from volume 3: Pranzi of Gino’s series Natural Italian Cooking.

ERA Team VP Real Estate is please to announce our 3rd annual Agents of Hope Golf Tournament to benefit the ALS Association and the ALS Division of MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). The tournament will be held Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 at the Chautauqua Golf Club. ALS- Amyorophic lateral sclerosis – also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a disease of the motor neurons, the nerve clls in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. For unknown reasons, motor neurons die, and the muscles they control become weak and then nonfunctional. Eventually, the person with ALS is paralyzed. Death, usually from respiratory complications, typically occurs between 3 and 5 years after diagnosis. However, about 10% of people with ALS live more than 10 years, and some survive for decades.

Agents Of HopeERA Team VP Real Estate Tournament to Benefit ALSA &MDA-ALS

Established in 1985, the ALS Association’s mission is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them compassionate care and support. The ALS Association has committed more than $67 million to find effective treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. MDA’s involvement with ALS began in the early 1950s when Eleanor Gehrig, widow of bellowed Yankees first basemen Lou Gehrig, was searching for a way to fight the disease that had taken her husband’s life. Mrs. Gehrig served more than a decade as MDA National Campaign Chairman. Since inception, MDA has dedicated more than $290 million to ALS research, services and information programs.

New techniques and products are continually emerging that make it increasingly possible for people with ALS to adapt to the disease, to pursue their intersts, and to continue to live rich and rewarding lives. The ALS Association, as well as the MDA-ALS Division’s research, services, advocacy and information programs are made possible through the generosity of individuals, sponsors and private contributors. (For more information visit alsa.org or als-mda.org). As you’re determine your financial and charitable goals for 2012 please take time to consider joining our team, Agents of Hope, in the fight against ALS. Your time and consideration are greatly appreciated. For more information on the event, to sign up, or sponsorship contact Hanna Soffel at 716-789-2093 or email [email protected]

Kid’s Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Chautauqua Avenue. The Harbor Knights will be back again to perform and bring the spirit of fun after the ride. Ron Sellers, CEO and president of Hospice, said, “Hospice

wants to ensure palliative care is always funded and that the most advanced therapies and treatments are available. This is one of the reasons we have events like this.” Megan D’Angelo, director of community relations, added, “We are looking for people to form teams, become a team captain for your business or organization, and have people get donations to ride.” Pre-registration for the Hospice Cup Fun Ride is $20. September 2012 Local producer and entertainer Shannon Nixon recently approached the owner of the Spire Theater in Jamestown, Angelo Giuffre, with the concept of running a theatrical season for the purpose of donating proceeds to children undergoing medical treatment. After a well-received benefit concert that was staged in May 2011 for quadruple transplant patient Ryan Samuelson, Ms. Nixon knew she wanted to continue producing these shows. During the meeting between the two local arts professionals, the details of the project were refined and “Shannon’s Kids Series” was born. The season premiers in September 2012 and will kick off with “Jeanie and the Harvey Boys Radio Show” a vintage style radio comedy to benefit cancer patient Aili Makuch. Fifteen year old Aili of Bemus Pt. was diagnosed with Wilm’s tumor also known as nephroblastoma, a rare kidney cancer. Ms. Nixon wanted to

Kid’s Theater SeriesShannon Nixon & The Spire Theater To Launch Series To Help Kids

make sure the series was helping local kids and families in need of support. She quickly contacted people she knew for names and was directed to the Makuch family. Immediately, Shannon made sure Aili would be the first to be a part of “Shannon’s Kids Series”. Ms. Nixon’s mission is to see the community step in and become a part of this project. She explains her involvement in the arts has always been a passion of hers, but pairing that passion with her desire to help others creates the most rewarding kind of work and an incredible sense of purpose. “This is what I have to do. I have every hope that this new undertaking becomes a success and that we can expand and help countless kids in the future. The life of this project relies heavily on multiple helping hands. I want to inspire people to reach out and get on board. I’d really love to get a volunteer committee together.” She continues on to say that anyone can help promote and raise

awareness simply by staying tune to the progress of the production and telling others about what’s happening. Shannon urges local businesses to consider associating their names with this altruistic cause by helping cover expenses. Adolescents interested in gaining volunteer time can also be a part of this project by putting up posters and helping gain awareness. Following the premier of September’s show will be “Sounds of Soul”, “What Happens…Stays”, and “Frankie and Dean and All That Jazz” all of which are written by Ms. Nixon. All the productions will feature the talents of local celebrities and professional performers. If you know any children in the area in need of assistance for medical treatment, would like to get on board with this project, or would like to make a donation to “Shannon’s Kids Series” please contact Shannon at 716-708-8879 or via email at [email protected].
