[email protected]: HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! My daughter is taking statistics...she is taking 2 previous professors for writing and spanish,so she feels comfortable she knows them and knows what is expected. she was overwhelmed with 300 students taking the required freshmen course..what is the good life.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Calc II can be a challenging course but we have some great resources including our free tutoring, as well as the TA or teaching assistant and office hours

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): The beginning of the semester is a great time for students to pop by office and start getting to know their faculty

LOBBY kmdphdkmdphd: my son took stats last semester and did well. he is also doing the good life

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): Hi kmdphd, Calculus II can be a challenging course that requires some work. Calc II builds on the concepts learned in Calc I so make sure your student holds on to the resources from Calc I. Also, taking advantage of the resource Jaime talked about will be important!

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalynd): Hello everyone! My name is Jalyn Delancy and I am a student assistant for New Student and Family Programs.

LOBBY kmdphd

kmdphd: Thanks for the ideas. He AP'ed out of Calc I, so he doesn't have any UF material for it.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): lunaceci that is a great point, large lecture classes can be overwhelming remind your students to sit up front and get to class early if possible to chat with the professor before class starts

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: My daughter enjoyed What is the Good Life. However, she had some other academic challenges last semester even though she used the free tutoring/TA and office hours. We are hoping to start fresh and get her more involved in extracurriculars.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): The Good Life course can be a very engaging course covering lots of topics

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Jalyn is one of our great student assistants....any other student advice on how to be successful in large lecture classes?

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): ddmarie03 that is a great plan what kind of extracurricular activities is she interested in?

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Hey Kris Jen wanted to share the how to use sakaii videos with Dr. Lindner...those are all CITT's right?

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): Hello UF family members, my name is Jacob and I am also an office assistant for New Student and Family Programs. I'm looking forward to helping you all with any questions you might have!

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: She went to last night's meeting of the Equestrian club, but it was for board/leaders only. My daughter was sad to find another home for her horse when she left for UF.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalynd): Large lecture halls feel very intimidating and impersonal. I have found that taking the time after class on the first day to introduce myself and going to office hours regularly has helped to make the large class environment much more personal.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): ddmarie that is great she is interested in the Equestrian club did she find out when the general meetings are? Although with a little time she may end up on the board!

LOBBY miriam56

miriam56: I'm concerned that my son is taking 2 on-line classes this semester. Are on-line classes structure and is tutoring available for on-line classes?

LOBBY kmdphdkmdphd: any ideas how to get roommates to help keep an apartment picked up?

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): miriam great question Kris is our online expert I will let him take the lead on your question

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: I believe she got time information about regular meetings. She may also volunteer at the Alachua Animal Shelter (since she has a car).

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): ddmarie that is great we have several animal rescue and shelters that love student volunteers

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Jalynd and Jacob any tips for kmdphd on getting roommates to keep an apartment clean?

LOBBY susandefant

susandefant: Hi, This is my first chat ever. I hope I'm doing it right. My son is a freshman. He is taking What is the Good Life, Linear Algebra II, Intro to Number Theory, Enriched Physics with Calculus II, and Intro to Probability. I'm wondering if there are some social events at Hume for the kids, because Colin is over in Lakeside kind of tucked away and I think he'd like to meet some of the kids in Hume.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalynd): kmdphd having some roommate difficulties is quite common, especially in a students' freshman year. I have found that having honest and frequent conversations about roommate concerns(whether its noise, messes etc.) help to avoid having big blow up arguments that can lead to bigger problems. I would advise your student to simply have a meeting with his or her roommate(s) geared towards expressing his or her concerns and makinga plan for the future.

LOBBY kmdphd

kmdphd: Jalyn - I appreciate your advice. He has spoken with them several times, made a calendar for taking out the trash at least, but they don't seem to want to do anything else, and they get really angry at him when he raises the issue.

LOBBY miriam56miriam56: Hi Kris, can you help me regarding my question about on-line classes?

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): Yes, we have them in both Sakai and Canvas. It would be easier to give Dr. Lindner access to Sakai if that's what we want.

[email protected]: my daughter is at hume honors west, she said they do events there however she doesnt attend them. lucky u cleaning. my daughters room mate snors..poor thing...

LOBBY familychatadministratorfamilychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): Hi miriam, absolutely!

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Susandefant great question yes he is welcome to take part in the Hume activities...IRHA is the InnerResidence Hall Association that helps plan the events...all events should be posted at the hall or he can chat with RA for more details

LOBBY kmdphd kmdphd: One other issue I

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): also your student may want to get connected with SHO the Student Honors Organizationhttp://www.honors.ufl.edu/SHO/Home.aspx

LOBBY miriam56

miriam56: Are on-line classes structure and what if the student needs help. my son is taking 2 online classes and I'm a little concern.

LOBBY familychatadministratorfamilychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): they also host lots of events and activities

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: Is your son in a dorm, kmdphd? If so, talking to the RA may be helpful.ould love names of any shelters closer to or recommended by campus. When my daughter was young, she wanted to be a vet (but unfortunately, a family pet's accident dissuaded her from that career, which has a wonderful program at UF. Our vet (from UF) has a son currently studying in Gainesville, too.

LOBBY miriam56miriam56: How about jobs on campus? Are does difficult to get?

Page 8: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

LOBBY kmdphdkmdphd: He does have an RA that he just had to speak with regarding another issue

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): miriam, yes, most online classes are structure in terms of deadlines for assignments/quizzes/tests. But they aren't necessarily structure in terms of when students are required to watch lectures. What I tell students is, in order to set yourself up for success in online classes is you should block out the same time each week and say that this is going to be my online class time, similar to if you were actually going to class during that time. That won't be necessarily the only time you work on your online classes, but it should be when you do your primary work.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): ddmarie your student may want to stop by PetsMart on Saturday (adoption day) there are about 3-6 different animal agencies there all looking for volunteers!

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Personally I have worked with PuppyHill Farm and thought they were great!

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): Hi miriam, if your student is interested in on-campus jobs Rec Sports employs over 700 students to work in a variety of different areas. Students can also apply to work events for the O'Connell center. I'm going to look for the website links for you

Page 9: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): With regards to tutoring, it depends on the class, but instructors are required to have office hours for their online classes, just like they are with their live lecture classes, so I would encourage your student to take advantage of those office hours.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): kmdphd, ddmarie's advice about using the RA is great...if he needs assistance beyond that he can always go to his Hall Director.

LOBBY Gator1

Gator1: Has anyone's student had night time tests administered for day classes? If so, what are they doing to stay safe walking back to residence hall late at night? tests end 10:30, no people from dorm in her test section, SNAP can't handle volume of calls (only two vans), they don't show up. Just wondering what other students are doing? this was real challenge first semester...

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalynd): kmdphd- I'm sorry your son seems to be having such a hard time. DDmarie56 brought up a really good point. If your son's apartment has an RA, definitely tell him to seek their help in the matter. Some apartments also have CA's (community assistants) that can also help with roommate conflicts.

LOBBY miriam56miriam56: Thanks Jacob, I would appreciate the website link.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): Miriam, the links for those two websites are http://www.recsports.ufl.edu/about/student-employment/ and http://www.oconnellcenter.ufl.edu/employment/employment_student.aspx

Page 10: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

LOBBY kmdphd

kmdphd: miriam5- For online classes, I can speak from the college where I work. Most classes require work to be done by set dates and times, so probably the most important thing is to stay on top of the schedule. And I would recommend your student check the class website everyday for any updates and announcements. Since you aren't regularly attending class, sometimes students let these classes fall by the wayside.

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: Sorry, my last message went out strangely. Thank you for the animal recommendations! I also am eager for my daughter to attend the Career Event the week of 1/20/14. I would strongly agree that the night time testing is problematic, both in terms of safety and best performance. If we had known this was protocol for the most important academic subjects, I'm not sure we would have chosen to enroll at UF.

LOBBY Gator1Gator1: I'm glad to hear we're not the only one!

LOBBY miriam56 miriam56: Thanks for the info Kris.

LOBBY kmdphd

kmdphd: I had to attend night exams when I went to school at another large university all those years ago! I think the issue is that you have so many sections meeting at so many different times that they have to offer one night time exam to ensure academic integrity of the exam.

LOBBY [email protected]

[email protected]: when my daughter had night testing she ended up walking back to her dorm with me on the phone facetime till she got home. atleast u can help them feel safe that way.

Page 11: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

LOBBY Gator1

Gator1: I spent a lot of time and energy communicating with the Deans office as well as SNAP and they basically stated i was the only person who seemed to have a problem with it. I wish more people would communicate with the Deans Office re: safety concerns for their students.

LOBBY susandefant

susandefant: Thank you for the information. Do you know if the posted events at Hume are inside or outside. Colin has gone over there a time or two, but often can't get inside because of the door security.

LOBBY Gator1

Gator1: I understand why there is night testing but strongly believe the university should create transparency on this issue and address the ineffectiveness of SNAP

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: We did the same sort of "phone contact" until my daughter returned home, but we parents are hours away. Is there any other campus safety option in addition to SNAP? Could students form some sort of "TestSCORT" serviceto return to their homes withother student(s)?

LOBBY kmdphd kmdphd: True - safety is a concern

LOBBY [email protected]

[email protected]: my daughter explained to me about snap..u can call them and it might take up to 30 mins. she said that much time i can walk back. so we started facetiming for the test time.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalynd): susandefant - Some events are inside and some or held outdoors; it just depends on the event.A lot of times if an event is outside, it will be held in the back of Hume. If an event is inside, the people who work at the front desk will unlock the door so he can get in without swiping.

Page 12: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

LOBBY Gator1

Gator1: There is nothing. I literally explored every option with the Dean of Students. Terrible feeling to get a call at 10:45 pm from your child as they are walking clear across campus telling you it's pitch dark, there aren't many people around and they really feel uncomfortable. True, phone contact a plus however they say students should stay off of their phones so they can be more aware of their surroundings....at a loss!

LOBBY Gator1Gator1: I LOVE the idea of "TestScort" ddmarie03!

LOBBY susandefantsusandefant: Do you know if the post is outside of Hume to read?

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): Susan, it will likely depend on the event and how it is publicized but my assumption would be yes

LOBBY susandefantsusandefant: Okay. Thank you so much. I will let Colin know about all of this.

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: We had something similar to "TestSCORT"(way back in the day) when I attended a private university outside Chicago. Whistles were dispensed for what was called a "Rape Stop" campaign and (in the days before social media) we were encouraged to walk the mile back with others who gathered in groups we'd announce for our dorms. Low tech (and LOUD), but there's safety in numbers!

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalynd): While there are currently no programs such as TestScort, Uf's campus has an abundance of lighting at night. Similarly, our blue light system ensures that if a student has an emergency or feels unsafe or wants to report suspicious activity, they can press the blue button and help will arrive in seconds.

Page 13: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

LOBBY Gator1

Gator1: My daughter called for SNAP one night, waited from 10:30-11:20 at night, called them several times and they never came. FSU has roaming walking escorts, several roaming limo golf carts, and a shuttle that continually circulates around campus arriving in 15 intervals. UF is so behind on this and doesn't seem to care?

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Gator1 student safety is definitely a priority, an alternative to SNAP is a UFPD escort they can always call 392-1111 for assistance. Additionally, parking restrictions on campus are also lifted after hours and carpooling may be an option to walking if friends in the section are going to different locations after class.

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministratorfamilychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalynd): Thank you! I didn't know what to do.

LOBBY Gator1

Gator1: I know grown men and women who acknowledge the campus is very dark at night and even as adults do not feel safe.

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: Those are great suggestions, Jaime! I will definitely make sure my daughter has the UFPD escort number in her phone. She HAS driven from her apartment to exams since parking is available in the evening; we are very happy parking restrictions are lifted after hours. What time is parking available as "after hours"?

PRIVATE ROOM Gator1

Gator1: Jamie, car a great idea if you have one, however a long walk to park it to get back to you dorm at night.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): DDmarie, parking is lifted at 4:30 pm unless otherwise stated in the lot

Page 14: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Hi gator1 these are very valid concerns. I will take this to my Dean's meeting on Monday to explore further options to see if SNAP availability can be increased or if there are other options

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): this is the first time this has been brought to me as a concern and I greatly appreciate it

LOBBY Gator1Gator1: For a lot of freshman and students who do not have cars, there is still an issue.

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): I would never want a student walking at night by him or herself

PRIVATE ROOM Gator1 Gator1: Jaime,

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): ok but she can post them on her own from there?

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministratorfamilychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Also go home!

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): you are doing great! That is not a question you should be taking:)

PRIVATE ROOM Gator1

Gator1: Jaime, what is your roll with the deans office? My daughter actually meet with someone named Jamie regarding this issue in the Fall.

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: Safety is always a concern, even with a car, since the car could be the desired object (and batteries can die as she experienced Veterans Day).

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): I work with new students and families however I was on maternity leave this fall and just came back this January

LOBBY susandefant

susandefant: Is there any way UF could schedule more of their tests during the class periods so they would be given during the day?

Page 15: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

PRIVATE ROOM Gator1

Gator1: In one of her last communications with me, Dr. Shaw mentioned forming some type of walking groups. I am just baffled that nothing has been done to address this issue. I know that I am not the only one and it is extremely frustrating that the university makes parents and students feel they are the only one with a concern.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): Susan, many of the course that offer night exams are to accommodate the large amounts of students who take those courses. Typically once students get into their smaller upper division classes the night exams tend to stop.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Also another great safety tool that Student Government has just brought to campus is an app called TAPShield

LOBBY ddmarie03ddmarie03: Can you tell us more about the TAPShield app?

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Gator1, have you already spoken with Dean Shaw about this?

PRIVATE ROOM Gator1

Gator1: Congratulations! I would be happy to share the communications i had with Dr. Shaw this past Fall. This issue created such challenges for my daughter and stress that she ended up withdrawing from both of those classes.

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Thanks! As you know being a new parent is awesome (and exhausting) I report directly to her and will follow up with her Monday please send me an email at [email protected] and I will follow up with you regarding this

LOBBY gtrgrl97gtrgrl97: I just pulled it up on the app store, search. Looks helpful

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): it is so valuable to have family members like you share these concerns as you are right I am sure your are not the first one but until it is brought to my attention I may not know about it.

LOBBY jz747

jz747: Self protection items: http://www.womenonguard.com/Search.bok?category=Personal+Alarms

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): yes it is a high tech version of the blue light system and is pretty amazing

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): it is just being launched with UF students for the first time this semester

PRIVATE ROOM Gator1

Gator1: At length with no solution. I will forward a few of the e-mails so that you can see the extent of what we covered. Please don't think I am crazy but seriously just very concerned with the situation and frustrated that no one seems to care.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Safety also makes me think of the importance of having a strong support system on campus...have your students been able to develop an on campus support system?

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): I am happy to look into this and understand wanting for your student to be safe! Dr. Shaw is very student centered and I look forward to discussing this with her.

Page 17: Chat Room Name Username Message - orientation.dso.ufl.edu · PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF_NSFP_Kris): It went well. Sara and I had a 1:1 which was

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Jayln and Jacob how have you developed support systems while away from home?

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalynd): Great question Jaime! I have found that the best way to maintain a support system is simply by getting involved and meeting people who share my same interests. Being away from home can be lonely - it was definitely lonely for me during my first semester. But I found that by putting myself out there, getting involved and making new friends, not only was I able to get the help and encouragement I needed in classes, but I was also able to find groups of people that made me WANT to be at UF and continue to succeed.

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): do you and jake mind talking about how you made friends .getting involved campus jobs, greek life etc

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministratorfamilychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Ha great job!

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): One way that I developed a support system on campus was to be outgoing in classes. Having people you're familiar with can also have a big impact on developing your support system and keep you from missing home. Meeting people in your classes gives you a variety of benefits aside from just making new friends; having a contact person in each class helps students stay on top of work for the class. Many teachers strongly encourage their students to engage each other to retrieve notes in the event that one of them misses class.

LOBBY familychatadministratorfamilychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): great advice Jacob and Jayln

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministratorfamilychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): You guys are great!

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): Great idea Susan! I have been doing that for years! It really helps, both for security and success in the course

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Have your students joined any clubs or organizations? How have they been spending their time outside of the classroom?

LOBBY Gator1

Gator1: Thank you for that suggestion. She did reach out and study with some new friends however class broken up into small groups and sent to different testing sites (which happen to change from each test to test). yes, out in the dark finding a new building each time you take a test.

[email protected]: This semester my daughter will be cooking so that will take some of her time. hopefully cheaper than meal plans. she spends alot of time at the library, and now grocery shopping.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): In the next few weeks UF will be hosting its nationally recognized Career Showcase

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): lunaceci that is great! The office of off campus life has some great recipes that she may want to check out....cooking on your own for the first time can be a very rewarding adventure!

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): I would highly encourage all students to at least stop by the Career Showcase to get a feel for what it's all about

LOBBY gtrgrl97gtrgrl97: Is it a good time investment for Freshmen?

LOBBY ddmarie03

ddmarie03: My daughter had that same "Where is Waldo" experience; she did NOT get involved in any events last semester as she was just trying to get adjusted to UF academics and the night time testing. We hope that this semester will allow for more involvement and we are looking forward to the Career Showcase! Also, Publix recipes are easy, tasty and were some of my daughter's first cooking experiences (she is also cooking for herself this year for the first time).

LOBBY Gator1

Gator1: I just pulled up the app, the second sentence states " This application is not a substitute for walking in a group or with a friend". Tough situation that many students are walking by themselves and feel uncomfortable however feel they have no other option. Most students don't want to call for a police escort every time they go to take a test. Just would have been nice to know this information upfront. Thank you to everyone who made helpful suggestions. If your student is concerned with this issue, please have them e-mail Dr. Shaw, Asst Dean of Students so that she knows there are more students out there.

LOBBY ddmarie03ddmarie03: Thanks for the contact information, Gator1.

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Yes the Career Showcase is great! For first year students it is great to get the exposure to one of our many job search opportunities. I would encourage appropriate dress even if they are just checking it out as most students will be in business attire.

LOBBY jz747

jz747: When the registration opened on Nov 4th my freshman was given a date of Nov 19th to select his courses. During this 15 days many of the classes desired became unavailable. His schedule was then filled with elective courses that would have been taken several semesters from now. Several of the courses not available were needed this semester in order to keep on track for graduating in a reasonable number of semesters. At what point will a freshman in Aerospace Engineering be able to select his courses in a reasonable time?

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): jz747, if it is a critical tracking course your student will be able to meet with an advisor to be placed in their required classes for that semester. As far as registration times go, the more credits your student has at the University, the earlier they will be able to register. Each year, your student will gain a different amount of priority registration

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): jz747 the advisors are a great resource for navigating this very topic. has your student been able to meet with the advisor from the College of Engineering?

LOBBY jz747

jz747: Are these credits only the ones earned at UF or do other credits carried in count too?

LOBBY familychatadministratorfamilychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): it is usually UF credits

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Advisors can be very helpful though in making sure students have the classes they need

LOBBY UFchat2014UFchat2014: Does "usually" mean that AP credits accepted by UF count or don't count?

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): do ap credits count for registration? I don't think so

PRIVATE ROOM familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_JacobC): I'm going to say no, it says Based on UF semester status

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): The spring semester is the time for students to build upon the skills and habits they learned in the fall. Often the spring semester is when students feel more confident trying new activities...make sure to encourage your student to do just this!

LOBBY jz747

jz747: When does the Fall registration for classes begin and will College of Engineering advisor help with schedule if this becomes difficult again?

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalyn): jz747 - According to the Undergraduate Catalog, registration will open on March 24, however, the dates in which individual students are able to register will vary. Your student can check their ISIS account later on in the semester to see what date and time they can register. Advisers are always more than happy to assist students with any scheduling difficulties they may have at any time.

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): Your students are halfway through their freshman year! Let's make sure the spring brings great success for your amazing Gators!

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Jaime): The majority of our upperclass students do live off campus however we do have several halls that are mostly returning or upperclass students so the although not the majority there still remains a large number of students who choose to stay on campus beyond their first year

LOBBY familychatadministrator

familychatadministrator(UFNSFP_Jalyn): UFchat2014 - Many upperclassmen do decide to live off campus. However, every student is different so honestly it's all based on your students' preferences
