Contemporary marbled paper covered boards, calf spines richly decorated and lettered in gilt, marbled edges. First few leaves of second volume with light marginal stain. Occasionally some minor browning. An interesting and valuable compilation of various essays and articles written by Abel-Remusat treating the beleifs or religions, customs, languages and history of China and other Asian countries. Abel-Remusat was a medical student who became enchanted by China and taught himself the fundaments of Chinese by using Fourmonts work, and became the pro-tg of Silvestre de Sacy. He was appointed the first professor of Chinese in Europe, at the Col-lege de France, in 1814 which he held until his death. Cordier BS 68. Lust 100. Lwendahl 850.

Tall 4to. Pp. 55, (3). With 80 photographic plates. Original papercovered boards, calf spine with title label. Upper cover decorated in gilt. Bookplate. Comprises illustrations from Samaria including views, people and ceremony scenes from the Holy Mountain of Gerissim photo-graphed by the Swede Lewis Larsson. The accompanied text is written by John Whiting. They both belonged to the utopian Christian sect called the American Colony formed by religious pilgrims who emigrated to Jerusalem from the US and Sweden. The text has been translated into Swedish from the authors manuscript (in English) by Ernst Klein. We cannot find the original text in book form but Whiting wrote an article which seems to correspond to this work: The last Israelitish Blood Sacrifice: How the vanishing Samaritans celebrate the Passover on sacred Mount Gerizim which appeared in the National Geographic in January 1920 (volume 37, no.1). Prefaces by Selma Lagerlf and Sven Hedin. Published in a limited edition of 300 copies, of which this is no. 32. A beautiful copy.

Large 4to. Pp. 32 and 36 full page illustrations of which 4 coloured. Unopened copy in original printed wrappers, in mint condition. The Persian manuscript of this illuminated copy of The Story of Jamal and Jalal is preserved in the Library of Uppsala University. In 1829 it was pre-sented to the Library by Count C.G. Lwenhielm who had previously been resident minister in Constantinople. Here is a detailed description of the work; by Zettersten for the philological details and Lamm for the analyses of the miniatures.

Pp. xviii, 569, appendixes pp. cxliv. With three large folding maps by James Wyld, 15 full page etchings and many illustrations in the text. The maps are of the world, Tasmania and New South Wales. Later half green calf, spine gilt with five raised bands and title label, extremities somewhat rubbed. Bookplate. Some light foxing. This narrative is based on the authors journal kept during his six years of travels. He visited most of the Australian colonies and Van Diemens Land (Tasmania), made natural history observations and collected a variable herbarium which was sent to Kew. The appendices include accounts of prison conditions and letters to the gov-ernment about the plight of the Aborigines. Ferguson 3558. Mendelssohn p.60.

Small library stamp on verso of title pages and in a few more places. Half calf on green cloth, spines with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt. Spines slightly faded. First English edi-tion, published simultaneously with the German (Gotha 18578), of one of the most important works on African exploration. In 1850 Barth, German geographer and historian, joined the British expedition headed by James Richardson setting out from Tripoli across Sahara. The main goal for the expedition was to explore Lahe Chad in sub-Saharan Central Africa. Richardson died not far from Lake Chad and Barth was then designated as leader of the expedition. Barth was different from other explorers because he was interested in the history and culture of the African peoples and he scrupulosly studied the topography, history, languages and resources of the countries he visited. This nar-rative contains a detailed record of his travels and of the countries and tribes along the route with a special interest in regional economics and the impact of slave trade. First edition. result of an ill-contrived and badly executed, though well intended, expedition was proposed and undertaken by a few gentlemen, with a view to ascertain whether or not it were practicable to cultivate tropical productions on the coast of Africa, by means of its free natives (preface). Isabella Bird (18321904) travelled all over the world and her accounts became very popular, probably the most loved Victorian lady traveller. This voyage covering the last part of her 1879 journey to the Far East took her to the Malay Peninsula, Hong Kong, Canton and Saigon. Her account written in the form of letters to her sister vividly describes the places visited and her experi-ences along the route. A lovely copy. Cordier BI 1471. Robinson, Wayward Women, pp. 8183.

In our copy the second volume of part one (i:2) is bound between libros iii and iv of part one. The second part is printed by Giacomo Vincenti and the third by Gio. Battista Ussio. With engraved vignettes on title pages and four double page engraved maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The map of Africa is strengthened at inner margins, with a hole, and faded in a few places. The map of America is browned (due to paper quality), with tear at fold and another small tear without any loss, frayed at outer margins. The other two maps are fine. Some old annotations and underlinings in ink in the first part. Some staining and age browning, more severe in places. Contemporary vellum, stained, with title in manuscript on spine. Bookplate. Early edition of Boteros famous work; a political and geographical description of different countries around the known world at the time. First published in 159193, reissued many times and translated into several different languages. The game comprises twelve books of four cards each, and one additional card. With one folded sheet with directions (strengthened at folds). Each card gives the name among whom the mission was started; the place; the year; and the name of the Pioneer missionary. With text in English on recto and in Burmese on verso of the cards. The American Baptist Missionary Union was first established in 1814. The missionary work started among the Burmese in Rangoon and gradullay extended to other tribes and nations. At this time (1885) there were 14 stations in Burma, 6 in Assam, 12 among the Telugus, 5 among the Chinese, and 4 in Japan. The game is complete and kept in a special made cloth box. Some staining but overall a great copy of this fascinating game, which must be extremely rare to find complete.

Third edition, limited to 250 copies. Sir Richard Burton wrote this highly praised Oriental poem already in 1857 under his nom-de-plume Hj Abd Al-Yazdi but it was not published until 1880 by Ber-nard Quaritch in London. Preface by Isabel Burton.

Pp. xviii, 318; x, 319660. With two frontispieces, 6 maps of which 4 folding, and 120 plates with many photographic illustrations. Two of the maps are loosely inserted. Publishers blue cloth, slightly different in colour. Second edition (first 1913) of this classic work on travel and exploration in Mongolia for which the author received the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographi-cal Society in 1912. Douglas Carruthers was accompanied by J.H. Miller and M.P. Price on this expedition in 191011 which went through southern Siberia to the Mongolian Frontiers and the Yenisei river basin. Contains detailed descriptions of the various tribes and people living along the route as well as about the geography, political situation, natural history and big game hunting. The three coloured maps are compiled from Carruthers original surveys.Provenience: Joel Eriksson, Swedish missionary 191338 in Mongolia, and Sven Hedins guide in the area in 1929. Oblong 4to. Size: 37 x 24 cm. Comprises 12 aquarelles depicting scenes of different kinds of traditional Chinese gatherings such as receptions, parades and ceremonies painted on Chinese paper and mounted with a fine silk border. Each scene is carefully executed and painted in astonishing bright colours with delicate details of faces, textiles, tools, instruments, etc. The paper is very brittle and one of the plates have a loss (ca 6 x 10 cm) and a few more illustrations have small tears without loss. Original silk brocade binding. Its a lovely copy of a delicate and expressive work.

4to. Pp. (iv), ii, 175. With two tables (one folding). Later green cloth, red title-label on spine. The Gujarti language belongs to the Indo-Arayan family and derived from Sanskrit through Prakrit and Apabhramsa. It contains two alphabets; the Blbodh or Shastri (used for educational purposes) and the Gujarti (used for correspondence and mercantile transactions). William Clarkson was an English protestant missionary who for some years lived in Gujart. The new types of Gujarti letters were at the time created and cut out by the Mission Press, according to the preface. Scarce.

Old ownership signature. Some minor staining. First edition of a charming work about different Chinese professions each accompanied with a pen-and-ink etching by native artist. Treats the diviner; street singer; the collector of paper scraps; the lantern-seller; the blind diviner; the needle maker; the opium-smoker; street beggar, etc. The author served as Archdeacon at the treaty port of Ningpo for a period of eight years. This work of great ethnological interest comprises valuable information about culture, customs and geography of the Shan people as well as of various hill tribes of Burma. Con-temporary half calf, spine with four raised bands, richly gilt and title lettered in gilt, upper edges gilt. First edition. Sraphin Couvreur (18351919), French sinologist and Jesuit, came to China in 1870. He spent the greater part of his life at the Jesuit residence at Sien-hsien where he was professor at the Seminary. He complied several Chinese dictionaries and translated many of the Chinese classical works. Couvreur was the creator of the EFEO Chinese transcription method which was used in most of the French speaking world to transliterate Chinese until the middle of 20th century when it was replaced by Hanyu Pinyin. Cunningham was a surgeon in the Royal Navy and spent four years in New South Wales. His work is considered to be one of the best decriptions of the life and manners in the colony at this time. Publishers embossed leather, spines and cov-ers blindstamped and richly decorated in gilt, g.e., glazed yellow end papers. A contemporary presentation set; each volume inscribed on first blank to John Lionel Blakiston from his mother. William Daniell (17691838) travelled in India together with his uncle Thomas Daniell for eight years, sketching and drawing, and they produced a number of highly desirable aquatint illustrated works of the country including the renowned Oriental Scenery (17951808). Some light spotting to a few pages. First edition. Das based this work on Csoma de Kros grammar first published in 1834. He has supplemented it with materials drawn from Situ Sum-Tag, the exhaustive commentary on Thon-mi Sam Bhotas Sum-chu-pa and Tag-jug-pa. On Das second visit to Tibet in 188182 he found a manuscript copy of Situ-Sum-Tag at Tashi-Lhunpo, in the library of Sengchen Lama, Prime Minister of the Tashi Lama. In 1894 permission was obtained to publish the work at state expense because of its importance to students of Tibetan literature. However, not until 1911 he secured a block-print copy of Situ-Sum-tag from Ekai Kawaguchi, the well-known Japanese Tibetan scholar and traveller. Kawaguchi revised the book in proof because Das himself was then unabled to do it due to weakened eyesight. Yakushi (1984) D38.

He travelled to Italy to study the landscape, people, and especially the art and architeture of the classical antiquity. He visited Turin, Milan, Parma, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Terracina, Naples, Sicily, and many more places. The beautiful hand coloured illustrations depicting landscapes, people and costumes are drawn by Ehrensvrd himself and engraved by Elias Martin. Eke-berg made several voyages in the service of the Swedish East India Company during the years 174278. He was considered one of the most competent seamen of his time and is known for introducing more human treatment of the staff on board. In Sumatra he released three slaves of which two survived and accompanied him back to Sweden. He became a member of the Academy of Science in 1761 and contributed with several dissertations and essays. This ac-count of Ekebergs voyage to China in 177071 on the ship Finland is written in the form of letters to Pehr Wilhelm Wargentin, secretary at the Royal Academy of Science. It contains interesting descriptions of the Cape of Good Hope, Canton (Guangzhou), Whampoa, Hainan and Sumatra. He suggested a new Ptolemys latitudes and longitudes conversion table based on his own cal-culations which involved philological, geographical, ethnograhical and historical researches of commercial centers, resorts, harbours, etc. He read and studied a vast number of documents, manuscripts and books written in languages ranging from Pali to Chinese, from Arabic to Latin, from Malay to Greek and Burmese besides several European languages. During 18 months he travelled throughout the country visiting Bombay, Dacca, Benares, Allabahad, Delhi, Agra and other places. He died in Madras in 1826. This work based on letters and diary notes was posthumously published by his widow Amalia Heber. Occasionally some minor staining but overall a crisp, good copy. A highly valuable and most delightful work (Lowndes ii, p. 1030).

Aceh, located on the northern tip of the island of Sumatra, was the most wealthy, powerful and cultivated state in the Malacca Straits region in the early seven-teenth century. The Aceh War between the Dutch and Muslim Sultinate of Aceh lasted for over 30 years, between 1873 and 1904, until the Dutch finally were able to put down the uprising. Snouck Hurgonie (18571936) was the leading Dutch expert on Islam at this time and advisor of Native Affairs to the colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies. This narrative describes the countries along the way, the customs and manners of the inhabitants, their religion, government, ceremonies of the Chinese court, etc. The aim of the expedition was to conclude further commercial agreements with the Chi-nese. First English edition translated from the Dutch (Amsterdam 1704). The plates are those of the Dutch edition, with the Dutch captions replaced by English. The Russian embassy had less trouble with the enormous self-esteem of the Chinese than many earlier and later embassies. Before the Tartars became masters of China, it was almost impossible for foreigners to find admittance to the Imperial Court. Kang-hi was desirous of

The work is structured by subject, such as parts of the human body, family, professions, seasons, animals, plants, foods, colours, clothes, measures, etc. At end a brief grammar presenting the main rules of Russian and Tatar languages. It was published in Kazan, centre of Russian Tatar province, by the Orthodox Missionary Society (St. Gury Orthodox Brotherhood 18671913) which became the center of translation of religious and spiritual literature into local languages of Russia at the end of the 19th centutry. They even created scripts for several languages which only had been oral before, based on Cyrillic type. No copies found in OCLC.

Oblong large 4to. Size: 35.2 x 27 cm. 8 leaves folded in the Japanese fashion. Including 3 pages with title and preface (in French, English and Japanese) and 12 coloured woodcuts, all pasted on strong paper. Original silk covered boards with Japanese title label, lightly soiled. Taki Katei (18301901), famous painter of kachoga (images of birds and flowers) in traditional Japanese and Chinese style during the Meji period. He had studied under Araki Kankai and Oka Umpo, and in 1850 he went to Nagasaki where he joined a group of famous painters and studied Chinese painting. His work was exhibited at the International Vienna Exposition of 1873, Philadelphia in 1876 and Chicago in 1893. He was also a member of the Imperial Hosuehold which demon-strates the public recognition of an artist at that time. The exquisite woodcuts depicting flowers and birds look like delicate paintings but are woodcuts according to the preface. This work seems rare, we havent been able to find any libary copy neither any other volume or belonging part.

This work treats the history of Christendom from 1637 to 1688 as seen through the eyes of one Mohammed, a fictious Turkish spy. First published in Italian in 1684, probably composed by the Genoese his-torian Marana (16421693). It became enormously popular and was translated into several lan-guages and reprinted many times. Contemporary full speckled calf, spine with seven raised bands, richly decorated in gilt and with title label (slightly chipped). Binding rubbed and top of spine slightly chipped. First edition of this monumental and early illustrated work on Japan compiled by the Dutch minister Arnold Montanus (162583). He based the work on journals from the Dutch East India Company as well as from writings of Jesuit missionaries. Its a narrative about the Japanese history, the people and their customs, religion, trade etc. seen through the eyes of European visitors who were very limited at the time. For more than 200 years Japan was almost completely isolated form the rest of the world. The Dutch, who had established themselves on the island of Deshima outside Nagasaki, were the only foreigners who were allowed to trade with Japan during this period (16411854). They had to renew the permission each year, for which they had to send a delegation from Deshima to the Shogun in Yedo. The reports of the visits between 1649 and 1661 provided Montanus with important material. Montanus book has been critized for not being scholarly enough and about the authenticity of the plates. (See article by Isabella H. van Eeghen). However, the plate of Deshima is acknowledged and its the earliest known illustration of the renowned island. A beautiful copy of an impressive work. In August 1830 John Williams and Charles Baff from the London Missionary Society arrived on Savaii, Samoa together with some Tahitian missionaries. The LMS mission was accepted by the natives and grew rapidly throughout the Samoan Islands. The missionaries developed a Samoan alphabet and put the language into written form. The first printing press began to operate around 1839 but not until 1862 appeared the first printed dictionary (this work) by Reverend George Pratt who served for many years in Samoa. Scarce first edition of this charming travelogue by the expeditions zoologist. The Swedish ex-pedition to Spitzbergen during the summer of 1890 was headed by Gustaf Nordenskild. Original cream cloth with gilt lettering, dusty and with some staining. Scarce first English edition, limited to 750 copies of which 250 only for sale.

Rabindranath Tagore (18611941), renowned Bengali poet, novelist, educator and composer has been considered to be the greatest writer in modern Indian literature. Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 as the first Asian recipient. He wrote in the common language of the people which was hard to accept by his critics and scholars. In 1910 he published the book of poems in Bengali titled Gitanjali. In 1912 due to bad health Tagore sailed for England and during the voyage he translated the Gitanjali into English comprising 103 poems. The transla-tion was published by the India Society in London with help from William Rothenstein who knew Tagore since his visit to India 191011. Tagore dedicated the work to Rothenstein as a token of their friendship. In the introduction written by William Butler Yeats you can read: These prose translations have stirred my blood as nothing has for years I have carried the manuscript of these translations with me for days, reading it in railway trains, or on the top of omnibuses and in restaurants, and I have often had to close it lest some stranger would see how

With one large folding coloured plate showing the famous revenge scene and 50 beautiful colour woodblock illustrations. Original cloth covered boards, rubbed. First edition. Scarce work on the famous Japanese tale Chushingura or the Forty Seven Ronins which is based on a true story. It is about a group of samurai who avenged the disgrace and sep-puku (suicide) of their master Lord Asano in 1703 by assassinating the official responsible for his death. This work describes the battles of these ronins, each one illustrated in a traditional Japanese ceremonial robe. Small wormholes running through first few leaves, otherwise in good condition with the beautiful and expressive portraits in strong bright colours.

A manuscript giving the alphabet and ligatures of the religious Lanydza (originally Ranjana) script used for special Buddhist texts. Format: 10 x 31 cm. Lvs 9, numbered 19 in Tibetan. Comprising one title page,16 pages of text and one page with closing text. Loose as issued within later Oriental silk cloth covered boards. The text is written in rows comprising the alpha-bet and ligatures of Lanydza in black ink; followed by regular Tibetan script in red ink and the transcription in Mongolian characters in black ink. First and last leaves mounted on old paper with some wear and marginal holes. Frayed at margins and a few leaves with marginal repairs.

Tha Ranjana script is one of many alphabets which derived from the Brahmi script. It devel-oped during the 11th century and was used until the mid 20th century in India and Nepal by the Newar people for religious texts. The Tibetans used this script which they call Lanydza when writing original Sanskrit texts and for writing decorative scripts in temples and in the drawings of mandalas. Many manuscripts written in Lanydza were preserved in the old monasteries of Tibet but most of them were destroyed following the Chinese take over. A charming and most unusal specimen.

However he lived in the border lands among men of Nepal for four years. Fifth edition, first was published in 1874. This dictionary comprises 12 527 characters, contained in 10 940 articles, and placed under 522 syllables, which follow each other alphabetically. Williams has arranged the characters according to the Wu-fang Yuen Yin system instead of following Morrison. Cordier BS 1599.
