Conklin, on the one hundredth anniversary of his ultimate sacrifice (May 7, 1918) in the mud and the blood of the trenches of WWI. On May 14 th , Past Commander Ed DeKoekoek, 1st Vice Commander John Bilski and I were privileged to present a check for $401.85 to the CEO at North Ottawa Community Hospital for the Tabs For Tots program on behalf of Post 28. A great big THANK YOU to the Building and Grounds volunteers who handled, stored and delivered over eight hundred pounds of scrap aluminum (collected one pull tab at a time) to the recycle facility. To everyone who pulled and saved those thousands of tabs, thank you and keep up the good work. Those dollars will be used to improve pediatric care at NOCH. On June 13 th at 11:00 a.m., Coast Guard dignitaries, including Rear Admiral Joanna M. Nunan, Commander, Ninth Coast Guard District, community leaders and all Tri-Cities residents are invited to a memorial service honoring the sacrifice of the one hundred and one crew members of the USCG Cutter Escanaba who perished on that date seventy-five years ago. The Escanaba exploded and rapidly sank with all but two of her crew while on convoy duty during WWII. Our own Honor Guard bugler, Walter Petersen, will be rendering Taps. Let’s have a good Legion Family turn out, PLEASE COME! Following the service, a luncheon (hosted by the Klaassen and Sytsema funeral homes) will be served upstairs at Post 28. The traditional Flag Retirement Ceremony will take place in the parking lot at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 14 th (Flag Day). Your participation will be appreciated. Thanks to all the volunteers that help make Post 28 Michigan’s biggest, most active and best run American Legion Post in the state. If you are one who would like to try volunteering here, talk to any of the past Commanders and have them get you “plugged in”. ATTEND! PARTICIPATE! VOLUNTEER! “Try it, you’ll like it!” Jim Porenta, 100 th Commander Post 28 NEW MEMBERS cont’d Larry Nunn, Gulf USMC Michael Fortney, Vietnam USN Roger Nelson, Vietnam USN Robert L.
