WELCOME STUDENTS AND PARENTS:

Thank you for joining the Champion Theme Middle School Band Program. Classes are offered

every other day during regular school hours. The after school rehearsals for the month will be

sent out at the beginning each month.

First time students will need an instrument at least by the 1st week of September. Returning

band students, even if they are coming from a previous band program are to bring their

instrument on the 2nd week of school. This will allow them to participate properly in class,

receive a complete grade, and able to perform as an instrumental musician.

Instruments can be leased or purchased at the coalition of music stores that are listed on page 12.

You may also choose any vendor that is not listed. However, there have been major problems

with instruments that were purchased at Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart and other like chain stores. They

are not a major instrument carrier and therefore the quality is not very good. Many parents end

up purchasing another one or the student loses class time because the instrument is constantly in

the shop. (Please make a wise choice) A maintenance kit is needed for your child’s instrument

which cannot be bought a Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club. A metal, folding music stand is also needed

to allow the student to practice at a comfortable pace at home and when traveling.

6th Grade Beginning Band is open to first time students and to those who have previous

experience. Students are tested the second or third week of school and then assigned to an

instrument needed to play based on size, arm length, fingers, embouchure (lips, teeth), test score,

and the need for the number of particular instrumentation in the band. Students who are not

serious are advised not to register. The first three weeks are very important in order to

progress during the year.

REQUIRED INSTRUMENTATION:

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto-Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, French-Horn,

Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Bells.

6th Grade students will use the “Standard of Excellence” Book 1 by Bruce Pearson. 7th and 8th

Grade students will use the “Standard of Excellence” Book 2. All books can be purchased at

a music retail store with the instrument.

I am looking forward to working with you and your child during the 2014-2015 school year.

Musically Yours,

Matthew A. Hall

Director of Bands

Practice

All students are expected to practice outside of class time. This is necessary in order to

maintain progress in total musicianship. The expectation is that each student practices 45

minutes per day.

Playing Tests Playing test dates will be listed on the monthly activity calendar and are typically given

every 2 weeks. They are due on the assigned Friday by 7 a.m. via email and are to be sent

to [email protected]. Only audio files are to be submitted. NO VIDEOS.

Private Lessons

Every student is encouraged to take private lessons on a regular basis. This will give the

student that extra attention which is necessary at this age. During the school year, it is

impossible for one director to give the type of individualized instruction necessary in

developing each student’s ability to his/her full potential. Private lessons will reinforce

and refine concepts that are taught in the band class. It can also put your child at the top

of the class. The instructor will be able to guide the student throughout the difficult

stages of learning the instrument, such as tone quality, fingering, reading rhythm,

phrasing and style. They can also give advice on solo music, audition material, and a

playing career. EVERY STUDENT can benefit from one on one instruction. It really

works!!!!

Concert Uniform

The majority of our performances will be played in the CTMS Monday Business Attire.

Every student must own a Champion Blazer. No Exceptions. When the band has informal

performances we will wear our black polo shirt, khaki pants, and black shoes. We must

continue to strive for excellence and uniformity in our band program.

Band Dues 2016-17

All students will be responsible for a $50 band fee that will be used to cover the

following items as they are crucial to the success and functionality of our band

program:

Sheet music

Instrument repairs

Clinicians

Professional development

New equipment

Rehearsals & Performances

Members of the Champion Band Program are required to attend all scheduled

rehearsals and performances. School-related conflicts practices, etc. should be worked

out by the student. Each Band Member will be expected to attend all rehearsals AND

THEN continue to the other activity. Members may attend scheduled school-related

games when they conflict with the practice schedule. Students cannot miss

performances, rehearsals, etc. for activities not directly related to Champion Theme

Middle School! The exception is the GMEA Large Group Performance Evaluation

which is our capstone project for the year. Students that are assigned to a performing

ensemble that is participating in this event are required to perform regardless of any

other conflict. This performance is counted as 3 test grades. Failure to participate in

the Large Group Performance Evaluation will result in a failing grade on this

assignment. No alternative assessment or assignment will be given in place of the

Large Group Performance Evaluation. Please try to schedule all necessary

appointments on other days during the week, as to not conflict with after school

rehearsals. An unexcused absence from any band rehearsal or performance could

result in dismissal from the Champion Band Program!

Band Room Instrument Care & Storage

Our band program is very large, which means lots of instruments will be stored in the

storage lockers. To prevent loss and damage of instrument please do the followings:

♦ Place students’ name on instrument case

♦ Write serial number and brand name down and keep in a safe place at home.

♦ If instrument case has the option to place a lock on it, please do so.

♦ It is a good idea to put the instrument on your homeowners or renters insurance.

♦ Students, do not leave instrument in the hallway, gym, or outside on the sidewalk.

♦ Students, do not rely on someone else to put your instrument up for you

Due to the DeKalb County School System’s policy of not covering student’s personal

belongings (personal instruments are not covered), it is strongly recommended that

students bring their instrument to school each class day and take it home at the end

of the day to practice. If the student chooses to leave their instruments at school

overnight or over the weekend then the school cannot be responsible for any damage or

theft. I sincerely hope that this will help aid both students and parents with caring for and

protecting their instruments from theft or damage.

Thank you for your support.

INDIVIDUALLY OWNED INSTRUMENTS

The DeKalb School System provides instrument

storage in music facilities and instructors

exercise reasonable responsibility in caring for

the storage area. Parents are advised; however,

to provide some type of insurance coverage for

musical instruments. The DeKalb School

System carries no insurance that would provide

coverage for individually owned instruments

and no funds are available for replacement of lost

or stolen instruments.

DAILY PRACTICE ROUTINE (SUGGESTED)

I. Long tones, register slurs, natural slurs:4-5 min

Slow scales (in whole notes) for round production, intonation, breathing,

embouchure and scale knowledge.

II. Finger Work: 5-7 min

Hands should be relaxed and fingers should be curved whether up or down.

Check contact points of thumbs and sides of fingers. Finger motion should be

small and precise.

III. Tonguing exercise: 5 min

Tongue should be relaxed and allowed freedom of movement. Avoid moving

the jaw while tonguing. Tongue only with the very tip of the tongue and do

not allow the tongue to move far from the tonguing position.

IV. Scale and arpeggios: 7-9 min

Scales must be played in a very even rhythm with a metronome. Work on

scales slowly, and gradually increase speed every two days. Scales should

extend into extreme registers.

V. Etudes: 15 min

Work on two contrasting etudes at a time or alternate working on slow and

fast. Stress correct rhythm and articulation.

VI. Solo Repertoire: 10-15 min

Have two solos you can rotate in practice sessions.

VII. Band Music:

Always stress the difficult passages that seem to be a problem.

Remember: You are responsible for learning your own parts to the best of

your ability.
