teased her and quarrelled with her over pettythings.

Mini could not help. She would getdisappointed and wonder why she did not have

pretty wings. The birthday of Dabbu Tiger was coming close.

He was the king of the jungle. He announced thatanyone who gave him the best gift, will berewarded.

Wasting no time, all animals started looking forgifts.

Mini thought, ‘I am so small. What can I gift theking?’

Then she got an idea, “I collect nector fromflowers and make honey that is eaten and liked byall. If I give that to the king, it will be a nicebirthday gift.”

On the other hand, Dimpy got an idea too. “Whydon't I gift my beautiful wings to the king. He willbe happy and I will get lots of prizes.”

She quickly went to Chinki Mouse and said toher, “Take out my wings with your sharp teeth.”

Chinki tried telling her not to get her wings

pulled out. Without her wings she will not beable to do any thing.Nobody will be able to recognise her and she

will be unable to fly.But Dimpy did not listen to her. She was just

thinking of the prize that she would get. She said toChinki, “Please pull my wings out.”

Chinki did as said. Then she thought, ‘Dimpyis not recognisable now. All her beauty hasvanished.’

Now Dimpy was looking very ugly as her

pinkish red wings were no more.Chinky said, “Dimpy, you are looking ugly

without your wings.”

But Dimpy did not pay attention. She thoughtthat she would get back her wings in a few daysand she will get a prize from the king.

She was highly delighted at the very thought. She went to her friends to give them thisgood news. But all her friends laughed on seeingher.

Tiktik Mouse, Anty Ant, Kitty Bat were allgiving her a strange look. Nobody recognised her.Dimpy said, “Why are you all laughing? I amDimpy, your friend. Look, here are my wings. I will6 Champak

give them to the king.”Nobody believed her. Everyone said, “Our

friend Dimpy is very beautiful. You look very ugly. You do not have those beautiful wings

as well. How can you be that same friend ofours?”

Dimpy was annoyed. She said, “Good enough.I will sort you all out. When the king will see mywings, he will reward me well. Then I will showyou all.”

The king's birthday arrived. All reached hispalace and started gifting him. Dimpy Butterflyand Mini Bee also came. But nobody recognisedDimpy there.

When she gifted her wings to the king, he said,“What do I do of these wings? They are meant forflying.

“They look best when they are seen on colourfulflowers. They are of no use to me.”Dimpy's pride was hurt badly listening to this.

She lost her beauty for greed. She could not evenget a prize. She cried and cried.

On the other hand, Mini had collected a lot of

nector from flowers which had now becomehoney. She gave the honey to the king. The king tasted

it and found it very delicious. He said to Mini, “I did not have such a thing

before. This sweet is only with you. You collectnector from flowers and then make honey. No one

else can do this work. You work very hard, so youmust get the prize.”

Mini was in high spirits. She got lots ofprizes. ●

into Fatty's kitchen and feasted on whatever theyfound. They not only made mischief but alsodisplaced things of the kitchen here and there.

Fatty was highly troubled. But naughty mice

could not be caught. When Fatty ran behind them, they showed a face

and vanished. One day, Fatty got a trap and placed it in the

kitchen at night.

Mini and Tini got trapped. Both were shedding

tears on each other’s shoulders helplessly.Suddenly, Fatty's son Kutkut came running.

Mummy was standing there.Kutkut asked, “Where have these new guests

come from?”“Son, they are not guests but rogues. Both have

created lot of trouble. Now they will know,” andmummy left.

Kutkut found both the mice very cute. He satnear the trap.

“ My cute little guests, why do you troublemummy?” Kutkut shook the trap.

“Kutkut brother, we promise we will not trouble

you anymore. Please free us from the trap,” themice pleaded.Kutkut broke into laughter on seeing them

holding their ears, “Ok, from today, you are myfriends. I will free you but promise that you willnot trouble mummy.”

Both Tini and Mini nodded their heads in

agreement.Kutkut looked left and right and opened the

door of the trap slowly. Mini and Tini escaped asfast as possible.December (First) 2009 9

When mummy came there after some time, themice were not seen.

“Where are both of them?” mummy asked, looking around. Standing at a corner, Kutkut was

smiling.Mummy turned Kutkut's ears, “So, you also

have joined their gang. You have helped them flee. Now you will be punished.”

“Mummy, please spare me. Both are my friends. They have promised me that they would never domischief again.”

Mummy went away.

It was Kutkut's birthday next day. The table waslaid with many tasty snacks. Lots of friends of

Kutkut came. They ate a feast and went away. Lotsof snacks were leftover.

The smell of these snacks reached Mini and Tiniat night. But they restrained from creating mischief.

Fatty was highly disturbed in the morning. What has happened to Mini and Tini? They did notcome to have such tasty snacks. Everything is at itsplace.

On the other hand Mini and Tini were making

some other plans.“Kutkut has saved our lives and made usfriends. We did not even present her a birthdaygift,” with her hands on her head, Mini said.

Tini smiled, “Don't you worry. I prepared a giftfor her at night.”

“At night? But what?” Mini was surprised.

“This 4-coloured shirt,” Tini showed the shirt inher hand, “I have made this by cutting 4 old shirtsof papa.”

“Wow! This 4-coloured shirt is really looking10 Champak

good. Now go, quick. Kutkut might go toschool.”

As both peeped out of the burrow, Kutkut wasseen drinking milk in the kitchen.

Both came quickly and started biting Kutkut'sfeet. Kutkut looked down in scare.

“My cute friends, why did you not come to mybirthday?” Kutkut took them up with love andmade them sit on the table. He kept a big box of

cake in front of them.Taking his hands behind, Tini said, “We do not

want the cake.”“Ok, but why did you take your hand away?”

Kutkut pulled his hand in front.Seeing a box in his hand, he asked, “What is

there in it?”“A 4-coloured shirt for you,” said Tini.“4-coloured shirt?” Kutkut quickly opened the

box.“Wow! How beautiful!” Kutkut ran to mummy

shouting.“Mummy look, this 4-coloured shirt. My cute

friends have given.”Mini and Tini too were very happy seeing

Kutkut pleased. Both took the big box of cake in their hands and

dragged it into their burrow. ●

“Take the bag and spare us. We will bethankful,” Biku said.

Both threw the bags and fled. Biku followedBablu. Such incidents started happening in the

jungle everyday. All including Songi and Mongirabbits were worried.

The 2 rabbits made a plan. They went to themarket and bought gifts for the criminals— boxinggloves with remote.

In the evening, they took the shortcut route andleft for home.

“The rogues will be taught a lesson from thegift. We will have fun... ha... ha... ha... ha...” Songiand Mongi were walking away delighted. Bothholding a box in hand, swinging it in fun.

hitting Didi and Vidi non-stop fighting. Both screamed with pain and said, “Someone

“Yes aunty. Tell me what is the work?”“I am finished with flour at home. Can you get me

Nimmi handed him the money and bag. Chintuleft on his cycle.

On the way, he met Blacky Jackal. He too stoppedChintu, “Where are you going, Chintu?”

“I am going to take flour from the mill for NimmiAunty,” Chintu replied.

“That is good. The letter box is on the way. Post my

letter in it. I am not keeping well.”“Don't worry, uncle. I will do that,” taking theletter from uncle, Chintu proceeded.

He first put the letter in the letter box and thenwent to the mill. The mill was overcrowded. It wastaking time but he bought the flour and gave it toNimmi Aunty. Aunty blessed him, “I wish you

happiness, son.”It was evening by the time he reached home. Pinky

SUNDERVAN WASin the grip ofrecession. The

king tried many ways to

deal with the conditionbut nothing worked.

In order to reduceexpenditure, King SherSingh sold off his carand started on foot toinspect the forest.

One day when he stepped out of his palace forinspection, the poet of the jungle Tarachand Parrotlooked at him and said, “With recession hitting, theking had to sell of his car.”

Hearing the parrot's poem, the birds andanimals present there started laughing whilehiding their faces.

The king got annoyed and roared with anger,“You foolish parrot, the entire forest is in the gripof recession and there is possibility of drought andyou are reciting a poem.”

“It is your duty to solve these problems as yourule the forest,” Tarachand again sang.

“Surely, I am the king of the forest but do thebirds and animals of the jungle not have any dutytowards the jungle? Poets pull the attention of alltheir listeners towards the problems and there

solutions in their poems but you just write uselesspoems,” King Sher Singh said.“You have made me realise my duties. I will try

to solve the problems somehow.” He again recitedand flew away.

For next 2 days Tarachand could not be seen by

anyone. The third day, Tarachand went to KingSher Singh and said, “Your Majesty, I have thoughtof plans to emerge both out of recession anddrought. I would request you to call all the animalsand birds of the jungle here. In front of them I willdescribe the solution to these problems.”

“All right.”

Very soon, all the birds and animals of thejungle gathered there.

“Friends, kindly listen carefully and thinkseriously about what I am saying. Do not thinkDecember (First) 2009 63

that I am speaking ill about anyone or makingfun.”

As Tarachand stopped speaking, all animalsstarted whispering to one another.

“As you all know that we are facing recessionthese days and there are possibilities of droughtin our jungle too. Therefore, our primeresponsibility is to use food very carefully so thatduring drought conditions we have adequate foodwith us.

“Our friend crow eats half of the things and

spill half of them. So, I would suggest that crowsshould eat in 2 batches. The food that is spilled by

first batch can be had by the second batch,” saidTarachand.

All the crows got wild at Tarachand'ssuggestion. They shouted, “You want us to have

others’ leftover as food?”“No, I suggest that let your children have

first and then the elder crows can have therest. I suppose you will not have problem in hav-ing the leftover of your children,” Tarachandexplained.

The crows nodded in affirmation hesitantly.

“Bulbul, maina, sparrow and we parrots havefresh fruits from the tree. None of us has full fruit. We just have a bit of the fruit and the rest decays onthe tree itself. So I suggest that a fruit should beeaten by one family at one time. This will increasebrotherhood and the fruit also will not bedestroyed.”

“The idea is wonderful,” everyone praisedTarachand's suggestion.

“Per day diet of big animals like elephants, bearsshould be decided. This will reduce our importingfood from other jungles,” Tarachand said.

Small birds and animals welcomed the

suggestion but bigger animals like bears andelephants opposed it.

Finally, King Sher Singh had to interrupt, “Thereare possibilities of drought in our jungle.

Therefore, we must reduce our intake of alleatables. If in the interest of the jungle, you cannot

do this, you can leave the jungle and go.”Hearing the stern warning of King Sher Singh

elephants and bears stopped opposing. When everyone was quiet, Tarachand again

spoke, “Animals like jackal and the fox who arebusy stealing others things, should be given thework of digging wells so that they get employmentand their habit of stealing goes away. This will also

be good in a way that our jungle will haveadequate wells with enough water before drought. It will be your duty to keep watch on them, YourMajesty.”

“Good, but you tell me Tarachand, you havegiven duties to all birds and animals but what workare you doing?” King asked smilingly.

“Your Majesty, with the medium of my poems Iwill send the message of brotherhood and saving toanimals and birds.

“It is recession time, adopt the saving method, reduce expenditure and share food,” he recited.

All clapped when Tarachand said. ●

“Now you will not be able to rest. I will destroyyou. Save yourself if you can. I pleaded you withfolded hands that due to summer the ponds andlakes have dried. The river, which has water, is on

the other side. If you had given way animals couldhave had water, but you have not left yourarrogance. Now, you will surely be punished,”Prince said.

The rock laughed loudly and said, “How canyou punish me? What can you do to me? Don't talkbig?”

“Well, I will not talk to you at all. Be careful,”and Prince took out bullets from the dynamite.

The rock thought that Prince was trying to scarehim with a toy. It did not bother.

“These are bullets of dynamite. I will blow youoff with them,” Prince threatened, showing him the

bullet.“Oh, you will blow me off. Try it,” the rocklaughed aloud. Then she said, “Threatening me toblow off by showing a toy! You cannot harm meanyways.”

Prince could not tolerate this arrogance. He filled

the bullet and blasted the rock. The rock wasreduced to pieces. While dying, the rock said, “I thought, you were

showing me a toy to scare me. You have reallyblown me to pieces with the dynamite. I waswrong. You asked just a little space. If I hadgiven that, I would not have been reduced to this

state. I have got the result of my doing,” and therock died.

“Long live the Prince,” the animals assembledthere shouted victory for the Prince. “Now we willDecember (First) 2009 75

be able to drink the river water. This wicked rockhad blocked our way. You have done a favour on usby blowing off the rock.”

“This was my duty. I did not want to blow

the rock off but I requested it many times to giveus way but it was too arrogant. I had to take thisstep.”

“You did the right thing. One, who comes in theway of good work, should be taught a lesson.”

The old bear asked, “Where did you get thesebullets from?”

“They were gifted to me by my soldier uncle

Dahar Singh,” Prince replied. “I had to teach therock a lesson.

Months back while sleeping one night I wasmurmuring 'bullets, bullets.' In the morning when

uncle asked me, I requested him to gift me bulletsof dynamite on my birthday. I promised him that Iwill not misuse the bullets. So he gifted them tome.”

Uncle bear smiled and then celebrated for theopening along with other animals.

When Dahar Singh came to know that Princehad utilised the bullets for good work, he

praised him. The king too was happy with the goodwork of his son. He was satisfied that his sonunderstood the problems of his subjects. He wouldprove a good king in future. But he advised himthat he was too young just now. He should stayaway from gunpowder and weapons.

Now the animals could drink water from theriver. The old and weak ones were more at anadvantage as they had to earlier take the wayaround the rock to reach the river for water. ●

Actually, it was a piggybank in the shape of a TV.

“Exactly, did you notice, otherwise how much

money you would have wasted on nothing? Now Iwill open a bank account for you in the post officeso that you get into habit of regular saving. And youcan use your saved money on something whichreally is useful for you,” said his uncle.

Meeku Rabbit asked, “So, what do we do withthis TV toy?”

His uncle clarified, “Come on! This is just atoy to make you understand the good habit ofsaving money. See, there is no machine inside thisTV toy.”

Meeku Rabbit understood everything andrealised that because of an ordinary looking TV toy,he had understood the importance of habit ofsaving money. ●
