INTRODUCTION

But for the generosity of Mrs Hilda Stevens this booklet would not have been produced, and she wishes the proceeds of its sale to go towards the upkeep of the Church.

The scheme of kneelers for Chalfont St. Giles Parish Church was started rather by chance. In the early 1960's when the Rev. Watson Hagger was Rector, there were some rather shabby carpet hassocks in the Sanctuary and I asked if I might be permitted to work two kneelers with lily designs for the Servers. Mrs Hagger helped to decide on a certain blue (Appleton's Sky Blue No. 6) which toned with the carpet in front of the Altar. Much later this blue was used throughout the Church because it was con-sidered a "lively" colour for some blues can look very dull when the Church is not brightly lit.

One thing leading to another, Mrs Evelyn Groom worked with me to re-cover the choir stall kneelers. Next, Mrs Groom, Miss Parsons, Mrs Wilson and I worked two cushions and two kneelers of similar design for the clergy stalls. Then in 1963 it was agreed that we should ask any-one who might be interested to work and donate a kneeler.

As we were proposing to make the pads up ourselves from layers of scrap foam rubber in calico covers, (dimensions 12 x 9 x 3 inches) and with the price of our materials at that date, each finished kneeler cost only 25 shillings (£1.25). As this was a fairly modest sum, most workers paid for their own and several donations were received which were most welcome.

Except where designs were picked out in petit point or various other stitches, it was decided that the back-ground should be worked in cross stitch. This doubled the work but it ensured that the kneelers kept their shape

Page 4: Chalfont St Giles Parish Church Rafters

and did not twist as they could have done had they been worked in tent stitch.

We had no professional designer or needlewoman to guide us so that the whole conception and undertaking was very much a village effort. At that time no books of much help were available, such for instance, as the excellent book "Church Kneelers" by Joan Edwards which would have saved us hours of trial and error.

We had much kind help from Miss Dorothy Thorold of the Ladies Work Society where we obtained our wools and canvas. Unless otherwise stated the kneelers were designed by the writer.

Appleton's crewel wools were used throughout. Each worker decided on the theme or design that she wished to do. As a result there is a wide and interesting range of designs with few repetitions. Each worker also chose the size of mesh and type of canvas on which to work. Some needlewomen preferred single thread canvas, others double, and in some cases when their eyesight was not too good, a larger mesh canvas was used but this is hardly apparent because the finished kneelers are all the same size and linked by the same colour background.

It was decided to hang the kneelers horizontally because the designs looked better that way. This meant moving the existing hooks higher up on the pews. This was done by the late Mr Higley who was so kind and helpful when any carpentry had to be done such as making the stools for the Grayburn and Kendal kneelers and for the choir stalls.

The corners of the kneelers were all embroidered by Miss Bunny Parsons in long-legged cross stitch. Mrs Hilda Stevens subsequently undertook the backing and the making of the tabs for the rings by which they were hung.

Materials for the first kneeler were given out in July 1963

Page 5: Chalfont St Giles Parish Church Rafters

and the first to be completed was hung in the Church in 1964. Work continued until 1976 by which time 147 had been completed. Each kneeler carries a number on the underside and these are used in the following text for identification. When reference is made in the text to an office held, the date would be that on which the kneeler was worked. In some cases the name of the house where the kneeler was worked has been given as this may be of interest in the future.

The centre pages of colour illustrations were prepared from photographs taken by Mr Ivor Clements who gener-ously gave of his time and skill and we are indebted to Messrs E.P. Barrus who generously donated the colour printing. Thanks also are due to my husband Victor J. Wilmoth for preparing this material for publication.
