Zayed Future Energy Prize is named after the late founding father and former president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, who championed environmental stew- ardship. This annual award cel- ebrates achievements that reflect impact, innovation, long-term vision and leadership in renewable energy and sustainability. The school’s submission, the solar-powered cleaning boat, stood out against a number of candidates from all over the globe and was listed among the top 16 finalists in the high school category. The solar-powered cleaning boat uses electricity generated from the sun to store energy in a battery, which then drives the boat as it collects coastal trash. The student inventors plan to add an automatic trash collection system and a remote driving system in later phases of the project. The boat has three purposes and advantages. First, it reduces coastal pollution; second, since the boat is solar powered, it does not emit carbon oxygen and does not leak oil; third, the boat’s construction materials such as its battery and prop stand can be reused. “The idea came from our students. Our school once organized a trash collection and beach cleanup event to mark World Ocean Day. They were inspired by the activity and applied for a social practice project related to coastal cleanup and received huge support from our headmaster,” Jin Ting, director of the project, told the reporter. The headmaster, Wang Jian, said, “Since the founding of Shenzhen Yadi School, we have taken full advantage of all kinds of resources provided by well-known enterprises, schools, the government and society in a bid to promote the develop- ment of our school. To strengthen the cooperation between schools and enterprises is the key to improving the quality of talent in all respects and to cultivating students’ innovation capabilities and awareness.” He added that in the future the school campus will integrate new resources and energy-saving prod- ucts made by nationally famous BYD, a major automobile manufacturer in China, and strive to build the school into a smart and environmentally friendly place of international class. Shenzhen Yadi School is a private boarding school founded in 2003. It has 1,800 students. The school will partner with BYD, a previous ZFEP winner, to implement its project. About 50 percent of the school’s students are children of BYD employees. The spoon, which combines the three functions of a soup ladle, a strainer and a bottle opener into one utensil, makes eating hot pot more convenient and saves a lot of space. According to Fu, the design concept was rooted in his genuine enjoyment of hot pot. He noticed that frequently changing the dinnerware negatively influenced the experience of bountiful morsels. Therefore, simplifying the dinnerware without impeding dining efficiency drove them to come up with the idea of creating a multifunctional spoon. The judges all commented that the highlight of the invention is that it provides a concrete and practical solution to a real life problem. The invention was reasonably perfect, mature and ready to be put into mass production immediately. Huang Zhongwen, the advising teacher, said that Longgang No.2 Vocational School is one of the two secondary vocational schools with a maker space in the city. The school pays special attention to innovative design competitions, deeming that participating can improve students’ creativity. Inventions by the students of the school included campus-wide smart electric bikes using green energy and a treadmill+Internet concept, all well-received by maker competi- tions among secondary vocational school students. A total of 60 pieces were on display at the exhibition. The Kuku Chai International Youth Art Exhibition, held at Sea World in Shekou, was jointly organized by six prominent international schools in Shenzhen and the Art Wharf, and intended to showcase the artistic works of international schools, aged 7 to 18. The exhibition was greatly supported by Kuku Chai, a famous Chi- nese calligraphy and painting artist. By studying her works, the young artists learned the practice of the traditional and modern Chinese ink and wash paintings of landscapes, animals, birds and buildings. Subsequently, students created their own original works with their unique under- standing and the innovative use of various media and techniques. The second and third graders of SLIS produced 10 excellent pieces for this art exhibition. Among the 60 pieces of art works submitted by six schools, Chai and the organizers selected 11 best paintings, three of which were created by SLIS stu- dents. When introducing the best works, the organizers specifically mentioned one art work, which was composed by 14 stu- dents as a group, through the technique of blowing with straw. No hand painting was involved in the entire process.
