The “Go with the Flow” motto crowns the most important trade fair in the “Bever-age and Liquid Food” sector, to be held

in Munich from the 16th to 20th September: drinkTec 2013.

a real ThirsT-quencher

Many topics will be debated, symposia held with the active the participation of the audience on each of the 4 days: the points to be discussed include the evolution of the beer sector, hy-giene issues during production, packaging, marketing and other interesting topics.

To add a little sparkle and to pay tribute to the host city Munich, competitions will be held throughout the Drinktec trade fair and in the various halls dedicated to the many beer pro-ducers. Focus will be on the excellence of pro-duction lines, able to solve the problems of sustainability and look at the current innova-tions in marketing and packaging.

new fragrances and new aromas

The CFT group will be taking part in this major event with some very important news for the beer and other sectors of the beverage industry.

Let’s start from the beginning,

The Beer sector is of major interest to CFT. we have dedicated our energies to the sparkling and still beverages market for many years, and now, to complete our product range, we pres-ent the solution “From Hops to Pallet”: a pro-cessing line for the preparation of the best crafted beers and automated filling and pal-letising lines. we offer our new complete beer processing line (from production to packag-ing) made 100% in Italy, based on all the know how we have gained from many years working in beverage systems.

mix&cip

Our technicians and en-gineers have rethought the CFT mixer and tak-en it one step further in terms of design and production standards.

we have gone beyond the long-standing mar-ket standards, we have looked further in order to be able to supply our customers with a prod-uct that meets future regulations and energy saving requirements. Precisely for this reason, all the motors installed are rated at class Ie3, the saturation tank is fully insulated to ensure greater energy savings and all the instruments installed in the new system which come into contact with the product are EHEDG certified.

After this rethink, we found that the new Mixer could work with our CIP system, creating the Mix&CIP, a high-tech modular machine, we are confident it will be greatly appreciated in the industry.

The improvements cover not only the compo-nents but also the process. In the new Mix&CIP, the water is stored in the accumulation tanks for processing, it is sprayed through a variable number of nozzles according to the flow rate

used, improving the deaeration during process-ing. The CIP cycle in-volves the washing of not only the parts that come into contact with the product but also the CO2 pressur-ization pipework and the CO2 feed.

The CIP system in-stalled on this line is a modular, integrated unit that washes both the Mixer and the filler in-stalled downstream.

filling Time!!!

In the bottling sec-tion, we will show you the new mono-block (filler/seamer) for Mastercan 84/8 cans, the filling tri-block for wines and liqueurs Magic RDI 60/72/15 and the ro-botised palletisation island.

masTer can 84/8

Master Can is a “multi-purpose” ma-chine, CFT has paid particular attention to hygiene: the separate air return, no dynam-ic gaskets in contact with the product and the special base complete with drainage to the ground are just some of its strong points.

mastercan84/8 is based on the concept of volumetric filling, and can be controlled fully from the opera-tor panel (from valve phase adjustment to the

full control of the lifter phases). During each processing phase, ev-ery lifter is controlled by a solenoid valve, minimising mechani-cal stress and drasti-cally reducing wear and maintenance on this part of the struc-ture.

It is a machine that already includes all the most frequently demanded features of sparkling product filling: from the oxygen pick-up to production phase control, and has a special feature that makes it even more attractive. with just a few minor adjust-ments, it can also be used for HOT FILL filling.

Another important innovation concerns the Seamer, where the series 3000 ma-chine is made 100% from stainless steel with a hygienic base, it is fitted with a new oil lubrication sys-tem to guarantee

the highest standards of cleanliness and re-duced maintenance in the sector.

This system is equipped with a first handling robot with grippers, to rotate and position the various products to be palletised, guaranteeing “delicate handling” even for the most difficult and fragile products. Once the layer has been formed according to the palletisation diagrams

set in the PLC, it is compacted by an automatic self-centering and pre-squaring system.

The first layer is trans-ferred to the loading area to be placed on the pallet, here a sec-ond robot takes over,

using a depositing basket with double opening, complete with guides and side panels for final centering.

The main advantage of this system is in its extreme flexibility, combined with configur-

ing versatility which allows it to fit even into small spaces. The system configured for Drink-tec guarantees a production rate of 5 layers/min for 0.33 l bottles: this means an hourly produc-tion of more than 70,000 bottles.

Another special feature of the system on display at the fair is the automatic picking equipment change, which can be applied to a wide range of palletisation and depalletisation solutions for all your products.

The widespread use of “intelligent” Servo drive unit systems has led to the creation of the universal palletising “island”: an area that can be adapted to suit the current market trends, and meets the demands of increasing system versatility.

uTah Brewer COOPeraTiVe

Tag: draft beer, artisan beer, bottle, can, usa

Utah is one of the strangest states in the US. The most common religion is Mor-monism and within its borders there are

at least three types of natural environment (the rocky Colorado Plateau, sandy deserts and pine forests) and 70% of its territory is composed of protected nature areas. Utah is also the home of a top-quality beer brand, the makers of which have chosen CFT as its partner in success.

It is the Utah Brewers Cooperative, also known as “Wasatch and Squatters Beers”, from the merger of its two parent companies. Their head-quarters is in Salt Lake City, the home of its main plant, and they also have a number of pubs and restaurants in Park City and Salt Lake City.

a biT of hisTory

The Utah Brewer Coop-erative was founded in

1986 when, following his move to Utah, Greg Schirf discovered there was no local artisan brewery. So he opened one—wasatch Beers.

More or less in the same period, Peter Cole and jeff Polychronis decided to open a microbrew-ery in Salt Lake City, calling it “Squatters”.

From the ’90s to 2000, Squatters and wasatch Beers vied for the title of the best brewery in Utah, but in 2000 they decided to join forces as a coopera-

tive, merging their respective expertise to make the best beers to be found in pubs throughout the state.

wasatch and Squatters Beers has a very broad product range, extending from non-alcohol-ic beers (fruit and non-fruit) to high-alcohol beers, 12-pack seasonal beers and those for the holidays, like its “wasatch Pumpkin Ale” for Thanksgiving.

2009: a key year

The collaboration with CFT began in 2009/2010 with the signing of a contract to supply a turn-key bottling line for 12 oz (355 ml) bottles, in

both 6- and 12-packs, and a double size change in the new 7 oz (207 ml) and 22 oz (650 ml) sizes. In that period, glass bottles still dominated the artisan beer sector and Greg Schirf (at the time president of the Utah Brewers Coopera-tive and now its Managing Partner) decided to expand glass bottling from 100 bpm to 440 bpm.

But the real insight in that period was that of leaving room for potential growth in using cans for its products. A decision that would be confirmed by market trends in the years to come.

In 2009, during the negotiations for the in-stallation, the contribution of master brewer Dan Biurik was tremendously helpful. Thanks to his knowledge and experience about what was needed to make his beer, he fully under-stood the cutting-edge technologies offered by CFT and cooperated in the development of the best solutions to be adopted to reach and maintain ever-higher quality levels in the beers produced.

For Utah Brewers Cooperative, CFT created a full line that included conveyor belts to take

loose bottles from the depalletizer to the mas-ter Tronic RS 50/60/10 filler monoblock and a cap feed system to bring the caps to the cap-per. The filled and capped bottles pass through a stage that washes and dries the exterior of the bottle before it is labeled and packed in the for-mats chosen by the Utah Brewer Cooperative.

The company utilizes three basic packaging for-mats: 8-pack, 6-pack for 12 oz bottles and the traditional 12-bottle boxes for the 22 oz (650 ml) size, or in multi packs (for a range of types of beer).

2013: a broadening of horizons

In the period leading up to 2013, there was an increase in consumption of artisan beer in cans, a sign that the time had come to add to the pre-existing line a section for filling cans, thus completing the vision of Greg and his as-sociates. The investment made earlier signifi-cantly reduced the cost of installing this new function because only the equipment strictly required for can production needed to be pur-chased. Installation of this part of the line will be completed by the end of 2013.

Today, the Utah Brewer Cooperative bottling line is managed by Cindi Robinson and Dave Ruff.

focus on: arTisan beer in cans

Glass has always been the perfect container for quality and artisan beers. Until just a few years ago, drinking artisan beer from a can was unthinkable because it altered its flavor and re-duced product shelf life.

But today, the world of cans has changed. Cans themselves have changed. we have gone from cans made of three separate pieces of metal (bottom, body and lid) to cans made of two pieces of aluminum weighing just 13 grams.

Cans are now easily transportable and light, they virtually never break and they are an excel-lent system for defending the product from oxygen and light. The quality of artisan beer in cans is preserved through a careful, special filling cycle designed to eliminate oxygen and reduce overall absorption to the minimum possible.

Bottles and cans are two excellent bottling systems for top-quality beers and Utah Brewers Cooperative is the most concrete example of this. With their two filling lines they are demonstrating that excellent arti-san beers can be drunk both from a can or bottle, without either infringing on the qualities of the other.

tenance efforts, the company would not be able to attain its current high product levels.

masTer Tronic rs &masTer can Tronics rs

On both occasions, the decision to call on CFT to create such a key line was dictated, in es-sence, by the fact that CFT was able to provide what its client was looking for: separated air re-turn, very precise filling point accuracy and an

unbeatable low oxygen pick up for both cans and bottles so that the end consumer would be able to taste and enjoy beer of the highest quality through main-taining its freshness and aroma, even long after it had been produced.

For glass bottles, the answer was the 60-valve Master Tron-ic RS 50/60/10 filling monoblock. A machine with a range of features designed and built to operate at high speed and over a number of shifts, with low maintenance costs, in terms of both time and energy and consumption.

For cans, Utah Brewer Coop-erative turned to CFT for its Master Can Tronics RS filler-seamer. The Master Can fills and closes 170 cans per min-ute guaranteeing consistent filling specifications without ever missing a beat.

The same features found on the Master Tronic RS are also present on the Master Can.

Both machines have a very simple touch screen control panel used to adjust levels and on which counters are displayed, and from which the

various job files and other aspects that may arise during production can be managed. They also have an ergonomic design, both in terms of

all filling phases and for maintenance

The cfT choice

CFT is the only group in the world that can create and build in its plants in Parma, Italy,

both the can filler and seamer, thus offering clear advantages in terms of technology and management.

By also including a can filling system, Utah Brewers Cooperative has responded to mar-ket demand for beer in cans and beer in glass bottles, utilizing the best technology currently available on the market.

Q&a with...

utah Brewers Cooperative

What is key of success for a brewery in usa?

well it all starts in the bottle. That does not just mean great beer, but great beer consistency. Then you need to back up the superior product with first rate packaging that needs to be rein-forced as your primary branding image.

What is market situation on USa for indipendent brewers?

very strong. The craft category is about 10% market share nation wide, even much higher in certain markets like the northwest. i believe it will be growing to 20% in the next five years.

Why they did choose SBC / CFT as a partner and what is the key point of relationship between Utah and us.

we went with sbc/cfT for our new bottling line because of their engineer-ing support and price. we chose cfT for our new canning line for the same reasons, but mostly for the incredible service we received during the install of the bottling line. knowing these guys made the canning line decision easy. The simply do what is needed to have a successful project. no nickle and diming and no bs.

In 2012, MANUFRI addressed a challenge to

construction companies of the food machin-

production of reprocessable bases and com-

This question was posed to many impor-tant companies that have always responded by offering only single machines. cfT instead responded with an in-novative, high returns

and which corresponded perfectly to the needs of MaNUFRI.

Nufri had already had positive experiences with the CFT systems and for this reason the choice of main supplier fell again on the engineering and workshops of Parma to achieve this new line. The good relationship between the two companies was not the sole reason why CFT was trusted with the realization of this project: behind every plant and every machine the CFT

what has been achieved by the technicians

of Parma was a line consisting of a station for

emptying and storage of the raw material in a

dedicated tank, a first machining station (if it is

powdered ingredients). Subsequently, through

a complex system of recipes, different ingredi-

ents are mixed within the RDP and all SCR and

sent to two types of filling lines: filling in 1500

lt aseptic minitanks and sizes achievable with

Macropak AF / 2 (drums , Bins, small bags of

15 kg).

This choice can fill a variety of containers and was dictated by the fact that the products it manufactures MaNUFRI are intended for a very diverse industrial market: from small businesses to large industries around the world.

code word: TraceabiliTy

The central issue the customer was concerned

with was the traceability: they wanted to track

every ingredient used in the production from

its entry into the plant through its storage in

the warehouse and getting to the end cus-

tomer. For this reason CFT’s Office Automation

has created an ad hoc software, much more

complex than those previously made for simi-

lar work. The Office Automation Technologist

along with Nimrod Brand, have succeeded in

what, at first glance, seemed an impossible

dream. Every single ingredient is encoded in-

put, run all along the production line until the

creation of the final label to be affixed to the

container that will be stored in stock, ready to

ship to new processes.

psr and macro-pak af/2

The other two small

gems inserted in the

line are the PSR and

Macropak AF / 2.

The psr’s main purpose in this supply line is to physically prepare bases combining various types of ingredients.

The machine is equipped with a rotating coil, inside of which steam or water can circulate (in case they are needed to dissolve ingredients)

that combines them with the main components of the recipe. The PSR is a great ally when you need to have a production batch and must work products with very delicate pieces. An-other feature not be underestimated is the pos-sibility of reversing the direction of rotation of the coil which maximizes the potential for mix-

ing of the product inside the PSR.

The Macropak AF / 2 is the new aseptic fill-ing machine with two heads from CFT. Like other fillers, CFT can

work different types of products: from liquid to viscous product, the product with the prod-uct pieces or slurry. The high flexibility of con-tainers processed makes it indispensable to the end of a process of production: in fact, the AF / 2 allows you to fill drums with pre-sterilized bags, bins from 1500 kg, small bags of 1500 liters or 220 liters.

focus on: food TraceabiliTy

In recent months, the theme of the food traceability has been much debated in the media. But do we know exactly what it is?

The ISO 22005 is the international standard reference for food traceability and applies to the entire agri-food system. The task of this rule is to homogenize the knowledge regarding voluntary traceability of food.

The traceability of food is essential to be able to respond appropriately to local regulations (if any) but also for highlighting the features of the final product tying it to a well-defined area of production, the characteristics of the ingredients used for its preparation and to satisfy the customer’s needs (whether it is the final consumer, whether it be of industries or GDO). The traceability of a product allows, in cases of “health issues” to make a withdrawal targeted to a specific production lot.

The ISO 22005 is closely linked with the certification HaCCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) which aims to identify and eliminate all the points of possible contamination hazards during the production of a food.

By making some simple steps you can change the nozzle moving from a 1 “plug to the 2”. As all the other ma-chines of the series Macropak, also the AF / 2 has a precise and safe steriliza-tion system of the cap that occurs with the use of steam. The filler is equipped with a printer which allows the printing of adhesive labels (with fields defined by the customer) to be applied to the con-tainer that has just been filled.

The Balikesir province, in the western-

most part of Turkey, is the home of a

company that has successfully combined

excellent output yields

with one of the most

important aspects the

food processing indus-

try is facing today: re-

Agrovita is a young Turkish company offering a selection of products that ranges from tomatoes to other fruits typical of the Mediterranean area, including apples, pears, peach, apricots, straw-berries and quinces. All tomatoes involved in the production are procured within an area 30 to 60 km from the factory location for two spe-

cific reasons: to prevent these highly-perisha-ble foods damaging during extended transport and to further reduce CO

2 emissions.

This new, small com-pany has made wise use of the local terri-tory, focusing on issues of current concern, and making the right choic-es that have allowed

them to take a leading role in terms of energy conservation and production yields.

facing. They are new values that sometimes provide “food for thought”, especially in terms of designing and creating large-scale process-

ing installations.

Agrovita had a clear vision of what it needed: a line that could process and maintain the es-sential characteristics of the raw materials in terms of taste, aroma and color, but would also be “sustainable” with a delicate touch. Among of the various processing solutions of-fered the company’s management, the one from CFT provided the best answer to these process-ing requirements.

The production line purchased by Agrovita in-

cludes a Zenith system for fruit puree extrac-

tion with a mill instead of the traditional pitting

system, the new and efficient apollo Mixflow

evaporator, the new Cube sterilizer and dual-

heal Macropak aF/2 aseptic filler.

The products Agrovita offers on the market can be divided into two categories: those for the retail market, including its canned tomato paste for the nearby Middle eastern and North African market, and those for industrial pro-ducers around the world. For this latter market, it offers fruit purées and tomato paste in 200 kg aseptic drums or 1000 kg bins to be used in food processing.

In order to remain in the forefront, and not just from the standpoint of production, agrovita has obtained some of the most important ISO certifications on an international level: ISO 22001 (traceability of processed food products), ISO 14001 (environmental management sys-tem), ISO 18001 (food health and safety) and ISO 9001 (worldwide company quality manage-ment). The products from Balikeshir’s plants are also Halal certifcated (food prepared as Islamic law) and Kosher certifi-cated (conform to the regulations of kashrut,

jewish dietary law).

The Agrovita production line has two points of

excellence made by CFT that allows Agrovita

to put its philosophy into practice: the zenith

Chrono line and the apollo Mixflow.

The first, involving production output, is the Ze-nith Chrono line. Designed specifically for fruit

(and tomato) processing the Zenith cold and anaerobic fruit extraction line represents CFT’s top of the line. Compared with previous mod-els, this Zenith version does not utilize pitting equipment, but rather a mill that first softens the stoned fruit which then passes through the cold extractor and hot refiner (both belong-ing to the Giubileo family of equipment) and heat treatment for enzyme inactivation. Thanks to the parameters used by Agrovita technicians

and the help of CFT engineers, the color and texture of Zenith-processed products is superlative.

In terms of energy con-servation, the second

point of pride is the apollo MixFlow. This type of evaporator is different from those previously offered by CFT because every effect has two phases: upwards forced product circulation and downwards falling film-type. with this type of circulation, energy consumption for prod-uct pumping is kept to a minimum, thus re-ducing running costs, while at the same time maintaining product quality. The equipment is more compact than the larger Venus system, and is well-suited to the smaller and more deli-cate production of Mediterranean and tropical fruits. Its size may be reduced, but it offers the full range of capabilities of the Venus system and the energy-saving features of larger apol-lo installations.
