Our Program In a world of increasing global interconnectedness, social workers in the USA and abroad witness every day the impact of world affairs on diverse clients and communities. The Tulane School of Social Work offers the Global Social Work Certificate as an opportunity for you to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to effect change from a local to global scale. As a participant in the Global Social Work Certificate Program, you will be encouraged to explore your global interests in and out of the classroom. From the needs of immigrants and refugees to post-conflict and natural disaster situations, you may pursue a range of topics critical to our global profession. In addition, you will have course content which includes the following: Theories underlying international social work practice; The role and impact of globalization; International policies, frameworks and institutions; Global, human rights, ecological and social development perspectives and approaches; The impact of culture, societal values, and power structures on vulnerable populations in an international context; The skills needed to address injustice and effectively work within the nonprofit, development and humanitarian aid sectors. Along with coursework with a global focus, the Global Social Work Certificate program provides you with the opportunity to apply what is learned in the program in local, national, and/or international settings. The Tulane School of Social Work has partnerships with local agencies, foreign universities, and international non-governmental organizations for field placements, student and faculty exchanges, training programs, and cross-national research. While the list continues to grow, these collaborative relationships include sites in Africa, India, Latin America, the Middle East, and across the USA. Application Process To participate in the Global Social Work Certificate program, students must complete an application process which involves: 1) an orientation session, 2) an application with essay responses, a current resume, and reference letters, and 3) an interview. This process provides full details about the certificate program, explores suitability for program and/or international field placement, and allows for an opportunity to identify areas of interest in global social work practice. Global Social WorkCertificate Requirements

The Global Social Work Certificate is an opportunity for Tulane School of Social Work students to enhance their academic study with a focus on how social work is practiced in a global context and with diverse populations. The requirements for the Global Social Work Certificate are integrated into our exciting clinical/community concentrated MSW curriculum and allow students to explore their global interests within both core and elective classes and local and/or international field settings.

Along with completing all requirements for graduation from the MSW program, students seeking to receive the Global Social Work Certificate must also complete the following:

1. SOWK 7700 Global Perspectives in Social Work Practice course and two other globally focused elective courses;

2. A local and/or international field placement with emphasis on global issues/populations;

3. A minimum of two assignments per semester addressing global issues/populations;

4. A Professional Project which includes a global context;

5. Participation in a globally focused extracurricular learning activity each semester; and

6. A portfolio with documentation of all of the above and other related activities or materials.
