Museums Hold the Right Temperature• It can’t be too hot or cold, too damp

or dry, inside a museum.• If the temperature is not just right,

paint can crack or peel.• One reason some ancient arts has

lasted so long is that it was preserved in cool caves or dry deserts.

Museums Make Choices• Art displayed in each museum is

chose by a curator.• A curator is a specially trained

Museums Keep the Art Looking Good

• Museums hire conservators to clean and restore paintings so that years from now, they will look just painted.

• Conservators remove dirt and oil varnish and repair cracking paint.

• They often use x-rays and infrared reflectography to explore beneath the layers of paint.

Do I Hear Two Million?• Important works of art are often

sold at an art auction.• The two most famous art auction

houses are Christie’s and Sotheby’s.

• At an auction, a work of art is sold to the highest bidder, or the person who is willing to pay the most money.
