This fountain was gifted to the town by Provost Abram Lyle. This fountain has a filigree dome supported by 6 columns. The crests of 16 prominent families of that time surround the dome. Dutch Gable House Plaque (R) - 1755- This is the site of one of Greenock’s oldest surviving buildings. Tiling at Bullring roundabout – designed by Robert Stewart - 1979. This mural depicts Clyde steamers of the past and commemorates the heyday of ‘Doon the Watter’. Located between Oak Mall and West Stewart Street - 2010. This mural is a reproduction of the original Greenock street scene which was situated in the nearby underpass. The mural was enhanced and new modern landmarks added. Commissioned by Riverside Inverclyde. West Stewart Street Underpass Designed for Tall Ships’ Race 2011 - William Dobbie - the official Tall Ships’ artist. Names of some prominent Greenock people, past and present, are displayed. Clyde Square - designer Naomi Hunt. Sculptor - Malcolm Robertson - 1975. This sculpture commemorates an industrial Greenock. There is a Service of Remembrance held here annually. The Municipal Buildings lie to the north of this sculpture. 1736 – 1819 - Corner of William St. / Dalrymple St - Henry Charles Fehr – 1908. Statue marks the site of James Watt’s birthplace and site of original James Watt College which was endowed by Andrew Carnegie who also unveiled the statue. (1719 – 1839) – Westburn Street. Scottish Author. John Galt was Secretary to the Canada Company, and founded the city of Guelph, Ontario, Canada in 1827. Modern construction symbolising the oak leaves from the Green Oak Tree legend. Commissioned by Riverside Inverclyde and produced by Dufi Art. West Stewart St. commemorating the laying of the foundation stone by James Reid and the Brethren who died in both wars. Ascend the steps to the left of the Masonic Temple to George Square and turn right. Pumping Engine - 1799 was constructed using James Watt’s improvements. It was used at the Old Graving Dock, West Harbour for over 100 years. Spanish Armada gun from Spanish warship shipwrecked off Portencross (Ayrshire) 1588. Various sculptures and artefacts are found in the grounds. The ‘Caged Peacock’ sculpture by George Wyllie was acquired for the Museum and installed in 2006. It was originally created to hang at the rear entrance to Princes Square shopping centre in Glasgow. Cathcart Square – F A Scudamore - 1880. This fountain was gifted to the town by Provost Abram Lyle. This fountain has a filigree dome supported by 6 columns. The crests of 16 prominent families of that time surround the dome.

This is a self guided heritage walking trail of the statues, plinths, plaques, memorials and street furniture of central Greenock. It is not totally comprehensive.

‘R’ beside the name indicates there is a Roundel in the pavement with more information contained in the Greenock Town Trail booklet.

Container Way. Original site of the Old West Kirk (1591). This was the first church built in Scotland after the Reformation. The building was moved stone by stone to Campbell Street / Esplanade (half a mile west from this site) during the 1920s.

Kathleen Gibson – 1998. This is situated on Greenock Waterfront. This is a contemporary reflection of shipbuilding history and future hopes. It was inspired by students from Notre Dame High School.

Cath Keay – 1998. This is an abstract representation of sea life. It was inspired by students of St Stephen’s High School. Numbers 4, 5 & 6 are the result of a Sculpture project undertaken in 1998.

Gardens at Customhouse Place - 1972. This is an Admiralty Plan Anchor which was presented to the town of Greenock by the Admiralty to recognise its long association with the town.

Cartsburn West roundabout - 2012. This is the original site of Scotts’ shipyard. This Cairn commemorates 300 years of shipbuilding and engineering in the area. The cairn was funded by local Community Councils. This is a cast of the original plaque from Scotts’ offices.

Cathcart St. - Andy Scott - 2011. This statue commemorates the horses who worked in local industry. Look out for the panels which surround the statue giving further information.

1629 built in Scottish Renaissance style. Short columns support a pyramid top. Site of the original Schaw family Mansion House (see information in the park for details).

Bank Street - James Gordon - 2015. This wall gives the names of the citizens who were killed in the Reform Riot in 1820. Commissioned by Riverview Players.

West Blackhall St - Andy Scott – 2013. Erigea is a mythical wood nymph who will bring good luck to the town. Look out for the poems engraved on the pavement.

Customhouse Way - 1996. Situated at the entrance to the Cinema. Constructed by Bute Blacksmiths.

Barry Grove - 1998. This is a nautical themed sculpture in stone, wood and metal on Greenock Waterfront – symbolising the shipbuilding industry and the hopes of the future generations. It was inspired by members of Larkfield Youth Café.

Customhouse Quay - William Clark - 1868 . Multifunctional beacon with a weather vane, bell, light, clock, drinking well and post box. Constructed by Rankin and Blackmore, Eagle Foundry, Baker Street, Greenock.

Rue End St - nautical artefacts signifying the shipbuilding past of area.

Rue End Street - 2002. The Cairn was erected by the firefighters of Inverclyde to commemorate the tragic events in New York on 11 September 2001 (9/11).

Alex Proudfoot - 1924. The base of the memorial depicts a Viking ship with Victory holding a laurel wreath. On the cross are symbols representing sea, land and air. Other symbolism is evident.

Radical War Memorial - Bank Street - Angela Hunter - 2015. This commemorates the death of 8 citizens killed in the Reform Riot in 1820. Commissioned by Riverside Inverclyde and Inverclyde Council.

Cathcart Square. This marks the site of the gallows which were used for public hangings between 1812 and 1834.

Duff St – 1682. Site of one of the main wells used by people in central Greenock.

Turn left on to Terrace Road and ascend the steps to Well Park otherwise continue along Cathcart Street to No. 17, Long Well. Leave Well Park by steps at west end on to Bank Street.
