Each handout booklet will have a sticker on the front cover with a word or phrase. There are five different stickers; be certain that at least one of each is distributed. If there are less than five participants, give each participant two booklets to hold during the overview.

Welcome! This overview is an introduction to Central Florida Parent Center, which is the federally-funded PTI which stands for Parent Training and Information Center for central and northeast Florida.

Lets have a quick look to see whos here. With a show of hands, how many of you are parents of individuals with disabilities? How many are educators? How many are other professionals?

How many are none of those? If any participants raise their hands, feel free to ask them to identify their roles.

The AWARE ProjectParent Training & Information Center (PTI)Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP).

2Every state has at least one Parent Training & Information Center or PTI, which provides assistance to parents of children in special education in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA), Part D.

Central Florida Parent Centers AWARE Project is a PTI, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, or OSEP.

30 Counties Served

3OSEP split the state of Florida up into three regions: Northwest Florida including the Panhandle is Region 1, South Florida is Region 3, and the remainder which includes Central Florida and six counties in northeast Florida is Region 2.

Our AWARE project serves the 30 counties in Region 2. Instead of trying to read these little words up here on the screen, you can refer to the list of our counties which is on the first page inside your handout booklet.

CFPC Philosophies Parent to Parent Cultural Respect Grassroots Approach Informed Choice Interactive Training Collaboration vs. Confrontation

9Central Florida Parent Center adopted six specific philosophies, and everything we do every internal policy we set, every decision we make is filtered through this set of philosophies. Lets take a look at each one.

CFPC Philosophies Parent to Parent

10The Parent to Parent philosophy is known and implemented all over the world. This philosophy is simple: Parents will get their best information and support from other parents. Our projects activities are designed to encourage parents to hook up with other parents.CFPC PhilosophiesCultural Respect

11Florida has a diverse population with almost 40% of our people from minority ethnicities. We embrace that diversity and believe that the key to successful multi-ethnic outreach is to show genuine and sincere respect for all people and cultures.CFPC Philosophies Grassroots Approach

12Our outreach efforts are community-based in that we have designed specific outreach programs to ensure that our project reaches families in the communities where they live. For example, this photograph was taken at Nathaniels Hope, an annual event that celebrates children with special needs. Held in Orlando, thousands of families attend. CFPC Philosophies Informed Choice

13The Board and staff feel strongly that it is our role to inform families of their choices, not to make choices for them. We also believe that families have a right to choose from a full range of service delivery options without feeling that they are being judged for their decisions. CFPC PhilosophiesInteractive Training

14A research project conducted at Harvard Business School concluded that adult learners who are engaged and involved are more open to the learning experience and that FUN is not just for children - because a playful environment also helps adults to learn.

All of our presentations have interactive components, such as pop-quizzes, group activities, or discussion opportunities. Heres a great example in the picture one of our presentations includes an activity that uses M&Ms!CFPC PhilosophiesCollaboration vs. Confrontation

15As parents of children with disabilities ourselves, we understand how difficult it can be sometimes to advocate for our children. Weve been to IEP meetings, we know how confusing, frustrating, and even emotional they can be. We know that sometimes things can get pretty tense!

We strongly believe that to achieve the best outcomes for children, it is much better to create partnerships rather than engage in confrontation.ActivityLets Play Find the Missing Words!

16At this point, explain the Missing Word activity to the audience.

During the remainder of this presentation, there will be slides with words or phrases missing. The missing words or phrases are randomly printed on the outside of your handout booklets. When you see a slide with a missing word, if you have the answer, call it out!

So check now to see what your word or phrase is (look at the front of your handout booklet). Everyone found their word or phrase? Are you ready?

A number of our activities utilize the greatest communication invention ever known to man: THE INTERNET!

Even just a few years ago, using the internet would not have been as effective as it is now. Statistics clearly show that parents now use the internet for information and that those families who do not have internet access in their homes are accessing the net from work, from the local library, and from their friends homes.

Ask for a show of hands. How many of you use the internet (whether from work, school, home, or another location)?

Our website, with over 200 individual pages, is structured and designed to provide information, resources, upcoming events, and other online services in an easy-to-use format.

Webinars21We have presentations online, so that parents (and others) can attend an informative class session at their leisure at any time, night or day. We also regularly provide online live webinar presentations, while still maintaining an interactive format. 23Many websites include some Spanish-language pages which might include a few documents in Spanish or a few links to other articles or materials in Spanish. It was always OUR intention to go way beyond that, to provide a fully-functional Spanish site, rich with detail and resources.

All of our own publications and resources are available in both English and Spanish. Almost all of the other information, services, and resources that are available through our webpage are also available in Spanish - the only exceptions would be publications from other entities which are not available in Spanish. We have a group of trained volunteers that will call parents who request an IEP Support Parent match by filling out a form on our website. IEP Support Parents will then call the parent who has requested the match and assist them in getting ready for an IEP meeting. At times, the IEP Support Parent will attend an IEP meeting in person, but most often attendance can be provided by phone.

Each year we will advertise for parents to apply to become IEP Support Parents, and selected parents will be invited to attend a two day training to become prepared to assist in helping other parents.AWARE Volunteer ProgramsEmotional Support

26Several volunteers have been trained by CFPC staff to offer emotional support (Parent to Parent support).

A parent can fill out a request form on our website and CFPC staff will match that parent with a volunteer who will call the parent on the phone.AWARE Volunteer Programs

Another example of outreach at a grassroots level is our Faith-Based Outreach Program. We work directly with congregation leaders who agree to include information about our services (including our Ambassador program) in their sermons, and host support group meetings and/or training presentations.

Parents who are underserved, including low-income parents, parents of limited English proficient children, parents with disabilities, parents of children attending high-poverty schools and persistently lowest-achieving schools, and parents of children who may be inappropriately identified as having disabilities, will be made aware of and have access to services, especially those provided by our project.Targeted OutreachMulticultural LiaisonHispanic Liaison
