The Central College Upward Bound (CC UB) program kicked off the 2012-13 school year with an academic workshop held on Sunday, September 30, 2012. Forty-six (46) CC UB students and parents joined Upward Bound staff, Assistant Director, Kelly Kowzan, and Coordinators, Tiffany Berkenes & Nicole Kalkwarf for lunch and an informational session at Des Moines East High School. Following lunch, UB Coordinator, Tiffany Berkenes, led parents and students through a presentation on how to successfully navigate their way through a college fair. Students and parents put these tips to work as we headed downtown Des Moines to Hy-Vee Hall and attended the Golden Circle College Fair. The Golden Circle College Fair brought together more than 150 colleges and universities from within the state of Iowa and across the United States. It annually attracts more than 2,000 students and family members, making it the largest annual college fair in Iowa. The fair is hosted by the Iowa College Access Network ® (ICAN). In collaboration with Central College admissions, TRiO students were invited to attend Central’s Fall Visit Day on Friday, September 21, 2012. Students spent the day on the beautiful campus of Central College with a full schedule of activities, including an admissions presentation, campus tour and presentation through Skype from a Central College student studying abroad in Europe. TRiO students attended a special presentation led by Student Support Services (SSS) Director, Nancy Kroese and Program Coordinator, Matt Diehl, learning about the SSS program and the benefits the program has to offer students on a college campus such as tutoring and writing assis-tance, cultural activities and service-learning opportunities. Upward Bound brought seven (7) juniors and seniors who represented Oskaloosa and Des Moines East, North & Lincoln High Schools. These students are considering Central College as a possible post-secondary option.

Forty-three (43) CC UB students boarded a charter bus at 6:00 am to head to two col-lege campuses for the day on Wednesday, November 7, 2012. Our first stop was on the campus of four–year private liberal arts college, Coe College, located in Cedar Rapids, IA. Coe College students and alumni admissions staff provided us with a campus tour and a brief admissions presentation highlighting their major programs of study. Our se-cond stop was on the campus of the University of Iowa located in Iowa City. After provid-ing our program lunch, senior admission counselor, Tom Gioielli, provided us with a de-tailed admissions presentation on the application process and requirements of the U of I. The Director from the Center for Diversity & Enrichment provided us with an overview of the Student Support Services the University of Iowa has to offer students. 2012 UB al-ums & current U of I students, Brennan Lawrence and Kourtney Utterson, even stopped by during lunch and are doing well in their first year! Although there were no siting of “Herky,” the UB students really enjoyed the day viewing the campuses and learning about the differences between a public vs. private institution. A special thank you to the U of I Center for Diversity & Enrichment for paying for our program’s lunch.

Leadership among other Iowa TRiO students and a night sleeping in cardboard boxes – it was a busy month of October for our awesome UB Student Advisory Board! UB Coordinator, Tiffany Berkenes, accompanied Jeilah Seely, Cheyenna Fisher, Scottie Yang, Nickie Nguyen, Logan Worrall, Vice President Logan Neades, Htoo Say, Jasmine Jackson and Amber Davis October 10th at Iowa State University for the Annual Iowa TRiO Student Leadership Conference: Sharpening Skills & Overcoming Obstacles to Live your Dreams. We were excited to have two of our four Emerging Leaders, Irene Roberts and Diana Yang, also join them. The conference featured the inspiring and enthusiastic Central College’s SSS Program Coordinator, Matt Diehl and University of Northern Iowa SSS Academic Advisor/TRiO Alumna, Colice Sanders as keynote speakers and then chose break-out sessions to attend with other fellow TRiO students from around the state. A few of the break-out sessions that stood out to our students included Study Abroad, campus tours of ISU, Dealing with Difficult People as Leaders, and Welcome to College: Transitioning to & Making the Most of College. Tiffany was proud of the number of SAB members who took advantage of this opportunity and represented Central College UB so positively!

A BIG THANK YOU to the following SAB members whom volunteered their Saturday night, October 27, and braved the below-freezing temperatures to “sleep under the stars so kids can reach for them” at Reggie’s Sleepout in Des Moines: President A.J. Walker, Vice President Logan Neades, Dillon Wells, Htoo Say, Nickie Nguyen, Jasmine Jackson, Marisa Le, Logan Worrall, Scottie Yang, and Jeilah Seely. They were also grateful to have the company of UB Coordinator/SAB Advisor Tiffany Berkenes and volunteer chaperones, ETS Coordinator/Summer Residence Hall Director, Ryan Roy, TC Renee Art and TC Tayler Keitzer! Reggie’s Sleepout is an annual event sponsored by the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers at Drake University’s football stadium to raise awareness and donations for the critical issue of Central Iowa youth homelessness. Upon arrival with our extra-warm winter gear and after we ate the provided dinner, the SAB members were given the team-building task of creat-ing a cardboard box shelter for our sleeping quarters. Their listening skills, communication, and teamwork were fantastic, even as they encountered challenges – great work, everyone! Following that construction and Gangnam Style around the track, our group courageously performed the UB Dance in front of everyone during Reggie’s Got Talent, which was quite the hit. A.J. even got the audience to participate! Reggie’s Sleepout by the numbers: Nearly 24,000 Iowans are homeless each day (some among you and your classmates during school!), and over $150,000 was raised and nearly 1,200 people attended this year! For more information about the event and the boy it was named after (Reggie Kelsey), visit www.reggiessleepout.org. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” —Margaret Mead

We learned on August 31 that our Central College application for continued funding for Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) was not successful. Although August 31st was the last day of our five-year award and UBMS has officially ended, we have been able to transfer all 16 former UBMS seniors to the UB program to continue serving them through their completion of high school and entrance to college.

Twenty-one (21) UBMS students attended their final Central College UBMS event on Saturday, October 7th, 2012 with Director of Pre-College Programs, Louise Esveld, and Assistant Director of UBMS, Paul Gibbins. Students saw the incredible performance of Les Miserables at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines, followed by dinner at Spaghetti Works. UBMS Assistant Director, Paul Gibbins provided his motivational words of encouragement to his UBMS students at such a difficult time.

We want to thank Paul Gibbins for his wonderful leadership and enthusiasm over the past 5 years with the Central College UBMS program and wish him the best of luck in his new position with the Ankeny School District. Our students and staff will greatly miss you.

New Summer Model for 2012-2017 UB Grant

With the successful continued funding of our Upward Bound program for 2012-2017, a new summer model will be implemented beginning in June 2013. The UB summer program will still remain 6-weeks in length, however there will be a 2-week community-based component and 4-week residential component. This model will provide students with experiences within their community, such as job shadowing, college visits, community service, leadership training, and/or academic skill instruc-tion held at a target school(s). The residential component will allow students to still have the “college-like” experience, living away from home, having a roommate and learning on a college campus.

Students will be expected to participate in the entire summer program, both community-based and residential components.

Please reserve June 3-July 12 for the Summer 2013 UB Program.
