Some of us know what it’s like to be hospitalized with a limited diet– maybe a liquid diet for a day or so. After a couple of days, you can be craving for anything more solid—excited about some pudding or some sort of pureed chicken. In moments like that you really appreciate the blessings of simple food. Sadly, it usually takes just a couple of days after returning to “real
food” to take it all for granted again.
Some of us have faced times of deep personal loss—grieving the death of someone we have loved. We might realize for a time just how precious every moment is– and how precious is the
gift of spending even a moment with people who love us. You’d think we would never take a day or a person for granted again—and yet we usually do.
People can often take their church for granted as well. Sometimes we have become oblivious to how much our church has impacted our lives. We fail to recognize how the blessing we have received from our church life has “saved” us from life’s trials. Church people will face the same challenges as most any person—and maybe a few more because we also struggle with how to
maintain a faithful church in addition to the challenges among non church people.
How can we possibly estimate how much more difficult our lives may have been without the love and faith that has been poured into us through our church? How could we know the different
choices and wayward paths we may have travelled if the grace of God we experienced in church life had not been given to us?
It’s when we see people gathered for Worship—and for church meetings—that we see glimpses that we recognize how important our congregation and its ministries are. It’s when we see the love demonstrated in our warm greetings, hugs and handshakes that we find evidence that we
know the difference that our church makes in our individual lives.
When we see the personal commitment—and experience the loving spirit—and recognize all of the gifts that God has given us to share—that’s when we realize how devoted and grateful we are to this congregation God has given us. Thank you—for each time you join us in Worship—
for each time you attend a church meeting—or help in a church activity—for each time you offer a prayer or send a card to another person in our church.

CHRISTMAS CANTADA
Pastor Cheryl Thorne from Westminster
Presbyterian Church suggested that a joint
choir get together for a Christmas Cantata.
She expects to get the music in August or
September. Dan Sherar and her thought 5 or 6
from CCC would be great.
If you would be interested in the choir please let
the Church office know or call Pastor Thorne

Many thanks for your kind thoughts during Rev. Dunn’s anniversary celebration at
Broadway Christian Church. It was especially meaningful to have 9 members of
Central Christian Church in attendance.
We also had several women from Broadway Christian Church attending our Annual Women’s Tea on May 21. Those 7 women returned to
Princeton with glowing praise of how meaningful and fun the event was for them. They even have hinted at the possibility of hosting one as well.
Our Associate Regional Minister, Diane Zehr, was the guest speaker at the Tea and at Princeton’s Anniversary event.
Both of these gatherings have been a joyful time for us to strengthen our “Disciple” connections.
It’s July—fun, busy, HOT July. Among the excitement and meaningful ministry of July this year will be our denomination’s General Assembly. We have elected Larry Mattes and Dan Sherar to represent us in Indianapolis. Rev. Dunn will also be in attendance by virtue of his being a minister in good standing in the region. There will also be representatives from Princeton—and Vincennes—and Evansville and many other towns and cities in the US and Canada. We are among the rare denominations that allow representatives from each recognized congregation to be part of the “Disciple-making” process. Voting representatives from these congregations– along with the clergy—vote on matters that help shape who we are and what we do as “Disciples of Christ”. Together they help “make us who we are.” This year, delegates to the Assembly will vote on calling a new General Minister and President (GMP). When Sharon Watkins was elected to that position in 2005, she became the first woman to serve in such a capacity for a major denomination. She completes her second 6-year term in 2017 after leading and caring for the church through 12 years of challenges and new hopes. The nominee to serve as our next GMP has been selected by the denomination’s General Board who have forwarded her name of election at the Assembly. If elected, her term will begin on July 13, 2017—just after this Assembly closes. The nominee: Rev. Terri Hord Owens is a native of Terre Haute, IN, and a descendant of one of Indiana’s oldest African-American free settlements. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Government with a minor in AfroAmerican Studies from Harvard University. Terri began her professional career in the area of information technology, spending 23 years in the area of management consulting, data management and data warehousing. She previously held senior management positions with IBM, Ernst & Young, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and SBC, consistently earning recognition for excellence and leadership. An active lay leader throughout her youth and adult life, Terri has worked with children and youth ministries, taught Sunday School and Bible study in Christian Education departments, and worked to create drama ministries in several congregations. Despite professional success, she felt God had another assignment, and she accepted her call to ministry under the pastorate of Dr. T. Garrott Benjamin, Jr. at Light of the World Christian Church, Indianapolis, IN. Rev. Owens earned the Master of Divinity degree at the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she was a Disciples Divinity House Scholar, and recipient of the John Gray Rhind Award, given to the top M.Div graduate at the Divinity School. She was ordained at Light of the World Christian Church, wearing the robe of her paternal grandfather, the late Rev. Noel Hord. In August of 2005, she was appointed Dean of Students at the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she is responsible for administration and development of academic policy, student advising on personal matters, students’ academic progress, admissions and financial aid, recruiting, and PhD student professionalization and placement. Alongside her work at the Divinity School, Terri serves as Senior Minister at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Downers Grove, IL. She is the first person of color to serve as pastor of this predominantly white congregation. Assembly goers will have a chance to meet the nominee from 3:30 to 4:30 on Sunday, July 9 at a gathering open to everyone. The election will take place during the evening worship at the Assembly that same evening.
Our Stewardship Answers God’s Call to our Mission
2017 Budget Requirement Averages $1306 Weekly
Tithes & Offerings May 7 - $1846 June 4 - $1795 May 14 - $1365 June 11- $1697 May 21 - $1325 June 18 - $1274 May 28 - $961 June 25- $1879
We celebrate every dollar as a witness to the love and grace of God at work among us.
January—May 2017 Financial Highlights
Here are the numbers:
Budget calls for $1306/week. For 22 weeks: $ 28,732
Our Total Tithes and Offering Income was: $ 28,779
Our Expenses for the five month were: $ 24,847
Because our giving was more than budgeted and our expenses
were less than budgeted, our General Fund Balance grew
$3847 from $5116 to $8963 in the first 5 months.
In addition to the regular tithes & offerings we count on to pay
salaries and other expenses, we have additional funds on
deposit which remain from the sale of the parsonage. Some of
those funds were used to provide the new sound system in the
sanctuary. Later this year, the Church Board will consider
how those funds are to be used or invested.
We celebrate God’s faithfulness, your generosity,
and the responsible leadership within our congregation
that provides such significant ministry with such
responsible stewardship.
We also received generous contributions in recent
weeks for special ministries like:
Our Backpack Ministry, the Powerhouse Meals, our
Pentecost Offering and the children’s “Milk Bottle”
gifts that help families in the Congo.
