COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This series of lectures and discussions concentrates on developing habits of personal success. Emphasis is
placed on social soft skills, interpersonal communications, critical thinking, and ethical decision making.
Students who apply themselves should learn these job skills or knowledge.
TEXTBOOK(S): Job Savvy: How to Be a Success at Work. Ludden, JIST Publishing. 2008
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Understand the importance of employability skills;
2. Understand the importance of social soft skills and identify and assess their own skill sets;
3. Recognize, accept, and be able to work successfully in culturally diverse environments;
4. Understand and be capable of effective interpersonal communication;
5. Be able to use prescribed decision making techniques and understand the need for critical
thinking;
6. Apply effective life skills, time management and self-discipline.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
This course may be taught all or in part in an asynchronous manner. Instruction may include chapter
readings, online lessons, and/or audio-visual presentations. Learning activities and assessment will include
a combination of group discussions, individual and/or group projects, role plays, writing assignments, and
exams. Many assignments may also require library and internet research.

An Online Resource Center is provided which includes but is not limited to electronic libraries such as
ebrary; journal article locators such as Info Trac: and personal, professional, and writing resources.
Additional subject specific resources may also be provided by the instructor.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
The student must actively participate in class discussions, activities, and role-plays, and be prepared to
successfully complete all tests, quizzes, and assignments. Additionally, students should utilize learning
resource system materials to complete assignment(s) for this course. This may be conducted by utilizing
learning resources located in the Information Resource Center (library) such as reference books, texts,
periodicals, audiovisual aids, and electronic libraries, including ebrary and InfoTrac.
All students are expected to read materials associated with previous and subsequent class periods. Student
are also expected to practice curriculum related skills and concepts outside class to increase the retention of
the material. The typical time for outside class practice is one hour per week. Students will participate in
the completion of „soft skill‟ studies designed to enhance their communicative and cognitive abilities.

Student progress will be determined by the evaluation of presentations, quizzes, and exams. Classroom
participation measures the amount of active involvement a student has in the class in discussions, activities,
role-plays, questions, journal entries and responses in a timely submission of all work and assignments.

If the instructor does not approve the submission of coursework after the deadline, the grade for the
coursework will be zero (0). The instructor‟s decision is final and cannot be appealed.
