Your Invitation to Experience aYour Invitation to Experience a

Catholic Catholic EducationEducation

“Christ has no body but yours, no hands, no feet on Earth but yours.”~ St. Teresa of Avila ~

Our theme for this school year is Rooted in Jesus…Hearts to Love, Hands to Serve. This beautiful motif illuminates the mission of Catholic education, to lead our students to come to know that they are members of the Body of Christ who are called to serve one another. St. Teresa of Ávila, the great mystic and Doctor of the Church, provides us with a beautiful vision of our Christian calling to serve the world. It is empowering for our stu-dents to know that they are Jesus’ hands, feet, and heart in the world today.

When you choose Catholic education for your children, you are making the conscious deci-sion to have them experience God’s love as a part of each and every day of their learning journey; you are choosing to have them enter into a deeper relationship with Jesus. Our ultimate goal as a Catholic School District is to help our students reach their fullest God- given potential. This is the heart of our mission- to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another.

When we approach this from a Catholic worldview and with a faith infused curriculum, our students will become discerning believ-ers, effective communicators, critical thinkers, lifelong learners, collaborative contributors, and responsible citizens. At Edmonton Cath-olic Schools, we thus strive to prepare our students to contribute to the transformation of society and to achieve success.

For more information on the exceptional opportunities available to your children,

please contact any of the schools directly, phone the District offi ce at 780 441-6000, or visit us online at www.ecsd.net.

THE EXCITEMENT IS BUILDINGThe Edmonton Catholic School District is growing and improving as we look forward to opening a new Elementary school in 2019 and building a High School Completion Centre in the next few years.

Student Student TransportationTransportationStudents may be eligible for yellow bus service if they live within the catchment area of their designated school. To fi nd out if your child is eligible for yellow bus service, please contact your school directly or Transportation Services at 780 441-6078 or email [email protected]. All new eligible students requesting yellow bus service are required to complete a Transportation Application form. Forms are available through your child’s school or can be down-loaded from the District website. It is not necessary to complete a new transportation application every year unless your child is moving to another school or the address and/or contact informa-tion has changed.

Once your child’s application has been processed, families will receive a phone message direct-ing them to view the bussing information online through PowerSchool Parent Portal.

The provincial government passed Bill 1: An Act to Reduce School Fees. This new legislation impacts how Edmonton Catholic Schools charges for transportation fees. Only the following documents verifying birth are accepted:• Birth Certifi cate, Canadian Citizen Certifi cate or Passport

How can you make the transition to school go smoothly for your child?

• Talk often about Pre-K/Kindergarten and reassure your child that it will be an exciting experience.

• Attend the Pre-K/Kindergarten Open House at your child’s school in the spring.• Help your child develop a sense of responsibility. Encourage your child to learn to look after

his/her belongings.• Read with your child daily and have conversations about the books.• Explore the world in which your child lives. Talk about what your child sees by pointing out

signs, numbers and letters.• Provide opportunities for your child to interact with other children in order to promote the

development of social skills.• Encourage your child to know his/her personal information (i.e. fi rst and last name and phone

number).• Together celebrate the little accomplishments that occur each day.• Pray together.

What should I tell the teacher about my child?

The Early Learning teacher and the school will want as much information as possible. For example:• How does your child feel about coming to school?• Has your child been in preschool or daycare or will this be his/her fi rst experience away

from home?• What are your child’s special passions or interests?• What are your child’s special needs? (This includes everything: allergies, fears, unique physical

or medical conditions, previous speech and language intervention, emotional or behavioural patterns, or any major change that might be occurring in your child’s life).

What will my child learn in Early Learning?

In addition to having conversations with the teacher, Alberta Education is a great resource and publishes, “My Child’s Learning “Kindergarten Overview.” The resource is available at the Alberta Education website http://bit.do/religiouskindergarten or you can ask the school to see a copy during orientation. Genesis also publishes a Parent Handbook for Early Learning families.

We welcome you to review the Early Learning website at www.ecsd.net. This provides parents with additional Early Learning information, including videos that represent Early Learning programming in Edmonton Catholic Schools.

For our students, fl exible learning environments include: instruction and supports in a grade level classroom with same-age peers; individualized instruction in smaller group settings; a specialized classroom or setting; one-on-one instruction; or a combination of these learning environments. Parents and, where appropriate, students participate in the education decisions regarding placement and program.
