They live outside in the cold and wet, eating what they can find, trying to find a dry and semi-safe place to sleep. Thank you for helping us to help them. When you adopt a rescued cat or kitten, make a cash or food donation, or donate a bit of your time to help out at an adoption event, or by fostering a cat or kittens in your home, you are helping make life better for all those homeless cats. We are slowly starting to see a difference in the numbers of cats and kittens euthanized in Ventura County. Each year the numbers drop just a bit. I haven’t painted a very pretty holiday picture, but public acceptance of the necessity of spay and neuter for cats and dogs is slowly changing what we see here in the “trenches.” When queens (female cats of breeding age) are spayed, they no longer have litter after litter after litter and are healthier and live longer. When tomcats are neutered, they are less likely to be aggressive, fight, and be injured, so they live longer healthier lives too. The City of Los Angeles took a huge step this year when it voted to mandate spay or neuter of most cats and dogs living within city limits by 4 months of age. Soon perhaps, the five or six thousand unweaned kittens (5000-6000 kittens under 5 weeks old!) that have been euthanized every year by LA city staff might drop to just a few hundred. In a few years, the flood of tens of thousands of cats and dogs that are unclaimed or unadoptable and euthanized in the city of Los Angeles may slow to a trickle. The cost to the taxpayers might even drop too! Your taxes pay for the employees and resources it takes to staff the county shelters, and pay for the food and medical treatment. We need YOUR help to make this happen here in Ventura County. Make one of your New Year’s Resolutions a promise to tell one new person a month about the need for more spay and neuter in our county. Encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to spay and neuter their pets and to adopt a rescue (like our new president!) instead of helping fund puppy and kitten mills. It COULD happen here in Ventura County. You personally could start the ball rolling if you care enough. Contact your local representatives - city or county. My new adopted son is a rescue cat from Cats Cradle Rescue. He's a Siamese Snowshoe that is approximately 6-months old and absolutely adorable! He is still acclimating to his new home and to... Me! He is playful, independent, very clean and a real talker. As of yet, he is a day sleeper that comes to life at night when I need to sleep. He lived with a foster family with other cats and he cries for them at night. It's sad and that is why I cannot sleep. I am still considering adopting another as his companion, but I am going to give it another week to see if "we" are enough for each other. His given name is Kiet (pronounced "kite"- Thai for honorable) but I have been calling him Simba. He just acts so much like a

1001 Kitten stories:

Kitten Story #10 Maria Friend) “Bones” was a tiny dark tortoiseshell kitten found in a woodpile with her brother by two young Ventura girls and delivered to a Cats Cradle Rescue adoption one Saturdaynot so long ago.

Bones had an injured hind leg and her sibling had trouble just breathing. We think they might have been attacked by another animal and injured. Bones’ brother didn’t survive, but Bones was an amazing little fighter. Even when her injury abscessed and her tiny leg bone was exposed, she fought to survive. She had roundcare from her CCR foster mom, Maria, who pulled her through. Our rescue’s vet, Dr. Chong, x-rayed her leg and recommended that it be amputated. However, Bones had other ideas. She was walking and putting weight on her injured leg… it wasn’t “dragging” or holding her back from getting where she wanted to go. Bones is growing big and strong now. She runs, she jumps, and she climbs just like the other foster kittens at Maria’s house. Her limp is noticeable only when she is walking. She has stolen Maria’s (and husband Dave’s) heartwill be staying with them permanently whether she with 3 legs or 4!

Kitten Story #11 (shared by Debra Polk)On April 18, 2008 Gina Brenner, a foster for Cats Cradle Rescue, got a phone call about 3 kittens found in a car at an apartment building in Oxnard. I went with her to set traps and take the kittens in as fosters. The man we saw stated the mother cat had dropped Nicki while putting him

in the car and he was injured.

When we got to Gina's home and looked at him, he couldn't use his right leg and couldn't hold his head up. When he tried to stand up he would roll around on the floor. to move his two brothers to another foster home. He needed to be alone so he could heal.3 weeks old when he came to me.bottle feed him, I would massage his leg and neck.

As time went by he started to use his leg and hold his head up. Nicky is now 8 months old and will always have some issues. He is a very loving cat that probably wouldn't have survived without help. Our Vet didn't know if he would survive his injury but he fooled everyone.

Kitten Story #by Georgetta Brickey)Tfound (in Chatsworth) at night in a twrapped in his placenta and still attached to his umbilical cord. He was rushed to a

local vet who cleaned him up and got him warm and fed. The L.A. rescue lady who found him an online cat group and called her @and delivered him to Oxnard the was less than one day old when we took custody. We think he may be a Burmese cross. He was covered in short black fur when he was born, then gradually turned gray at about 3 weeks of age (see photo)back to a long soft black coat with a very long fluffy tailSince he never knew his mom, he is VERY people(and extremely loving) and I am sure finding him a forever home.

Kitten Story #13 (shared by MonicaRatatouille came to us at about 8 weeks of age. Sharon found him lying in the middle of the street in Port Hueneme during one of her feed runs. She almost ran him over. He did not move. She had to stop her car, get out andpick him up. Someone had shoved his nose into something nasty. Whatever it was stuck to the outside of his nose and crusted the inside of his nose also. Needless to say, he was very sick. Two rounds of antibiotics later he has the sniffles though. He has been diagnosed as have the feline Herpes virus and will have the sniffles for the rest of his life.

Cats and Cars

Some cats love car rides, but other felines are NOT at all pleased to be traveling and let you know it loudly and often! If you know you and your cat(s) will be traveling together for the holidays, plan ahead and get him/her/them used to riding in your car BEFORE your actual travel date. Put the carrier you plan to use in a corner of your living room. Put a favorite blanket and toys inside and leave the door open. Cats love to explore new “hiding places” and you want him/her to associate the carrier with being a safe secure place. If the only time your cat is in the carrier is to go to the vet, is it at all surprising that the mere sight of it makes him/her run for a hiding place? Put some cat treats inside too, but don’t close the door. You may find your kitty PREFERS to sleep in the carrier! Mine sure do! The next step is to take your cat on a short trip, maybe just around the block. Reward him or her with a treat when you get back. You want the carrier associated with all good things. Next time make the trip a bit longer and make a stop at a cat-friendly place like a pet store or other pet friendly place. If you plan to let your kitty out of the carrier at your destination make sure he or she is wearing a collar and id tag just in case! Don’t EVER leave your cat in a closed parked car. Check with your vet if motion sickness is a problem. If your kitty is unable to adjust to car travel, it may be better for all if he/she stays home. If your cat does go along, here is a checklist of items you should think about taking along. These items will help keep your cat feeling comfortable and secure.

1. Cat food so she won’t suffer digestive upset due from home to decrease chance of stress due to changes in diet.

2. Medication and dosing schedule if needed. 3. Litter box, litter, litter disposal bags, and scoop 4. Scratching post, cat bed and favorite cat toys 5. Identification – collar and tag with a cell or contact

number. 6. A pet carrier large enough for the trip 7. A large bottle of water from “home”.

Cats can get upset stomachs when traveling so don’t feed before leaving. If your trip is short, feed him/her after you arrive at your destination. If the trip is longer, bring along a snack and plenty of water.

Flying Cats

If you are considering air travel for your cat, you may be able to place him in a carry-on carrier that fits beneath the seat in front of you. Not all airlines allow animals in the passenger cabin so be sure to check with your travel agent or the airline. Make your reservation early, since the airline may also limit the number of animals allowed in the

passenger cabin. Try to avoid sending your cat as “cargo.” The cargo hold compartment is pressurized and temperature-controlled but there have been a few horror stories in the news about animals being lost or worse, dying or being injured by other animals or falling cargo. You can take several steps to ensure successful air travel with your cat. Book your flight well in advance and try to get a nonstop flight. Make sure ahead of time that your carrier is approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Such carriers are available from airlines and most pet stores. Make sure the carrier is clearly marked and indicates that there is a live animal inside. Try to arrive at the airport earlier than usual to make sure your check in goes smoothly. No matter how you travel, be sure there is a safe place prepared for your kitty at your final destination. Many hotels and motels now welcome well-behaved pets, though some may have an extra charge or require a deposit. Some upscale hotels now even have special accommodations for visiting pets, including treats, toys, and feeding bowls.

Boarding your Cat

If you decide that your cat is better off at a boarding facility, choose one carefully. For instance, some veterinarians have special boarding areas for healthy animals; others do not. Ask your veterinarian to recommend a reputable place. Or get names from friends who have boarded their animals in the past. Inspect the facilities and make reservations well in advance. Ease her adjustment by leaving her favorite food, toys, and familiar blanket with the boarding home.

Home Alone – When the Owner’s Away,

the Cats Will Play!

If you are going to be gone for only a night or two, consider leaving your cat at home. If you are feeding a dry cat food, there are metered or free feeding stations that have a storage jar or bin that allows the food (or water) to refill the bowl as the cat eats or drinks. If you don’t want to purchase one of these, just put food and water in extra bowls and leave them available for him/her. Clean the litter box and put in fresh litter. If you have more than one cat, an extra litter box is not a bad idea. You may want to ask a reliable cat sitter or a trusted friend, relative or neighbor to check in on your cat(s) if you are planning to be away for more than a couple of days. Leave feeding instructions, food, supplies, litter, and schedule for medications (if any), cleaning the litter box, and most important, your veterinarian’s name and number and the number where you can be reached. Is there a Is there a Is there a Is there a MoveMoveMoveMove inininin Your Your Your Your Future?Future?Future?Future? Many people are moving these days. Sadly, some have had to downsize due to the current economic doldrums. Here are some things to make moving with your cat less stressful for everyone. The first thing to keep in mind is that most cats HATE any sort of change in their environments. The key here is to minimize those changes as much as possible. Try to keep to your usual routine. Be sure to make time to play with your cat and give him or her lots of attention. If possible, designate one room in your house for packing, leaving the cat’s belongings and the rest of the house as undisturbed as much as possible until the day of the move. On moving day, think about boarding your cat at a local groomer or vet. That way you won’t have to worry about your cat running out the door as the boxes and furniture are being loaded into the moving van. If this is not possible, designate a (preferably empty) room (maybe an extra bathroom?) for your cat on moving day and put him or her in it with a litter box, food, water, toys, and bedding (and her carrier!) then lock the door or tape it shut and put a large note on it so it will not be opened accidentally. Think about putting a collar and tag with your cell number on your cat for the trip and even for the first few weeks in his/her new home. In the event that she accidentally gets “lost”, you have a better chance of getting her back! If your move is more than just across town, think about the following: Take a bottle of water from your “old” home for your cat and make sure you have plenty of her usual food. Check out hotels on your route to make sure you can find pet-friendly ones. Try to keep your cat in her carrier as much as possible while you are traveling. It is secure and familiar place to her. If you can find an “extra-large’ dog crate at a yard sale, buy & clean it, then put her bed and toys in it at least a week or two before you leave. Make sure the “gear” you need for your cat is organized so you can get to it easily. You will need trash bags, litter, an extra litter box, a scoop, food bowls, food (can opener?), water, etc. Take a roll of paper towels and baby wipes too in case of accidents. (Please see previous article for check list. If you are moving out of state, please be aware you may need to carry a Bill of Health Certificate for each of your cats. This form will save a lot of hassle and possible detainment in your traveling across state lines should you be stopped for a driver's license check or state inspection. The Bill of Health is signed by a licensed vet and says your cat is healthy, rabies-free, and has all required vaccinations.

If you are flying to your new home please see the previous article for information. Many airlines have restrictions on pets in the passenger cabin. Don’t worry if your cat doesn’t eat or drink much during the trip. This is a typical reaction, but keep an eye on her water intake and urine output. She should be back to normal within a day or so after reaching your new home. If she is still showing stress or is constipated or isn’t urinating properly, take her to the vet immediately. There is a stress-related condition that may occur due to stress that can be life-threatening if left untreated. When you arrive at your new home, move your cat as soon as possible into a room that will not be used right away. Unload his “gear” first and set up a safe spot for him – again, lock or tape the door. Provide a quiet safe place so she can rest. If you have any “dirty clothes,” put a few in the room too so the smell will be familiar. The idea is to have things surrounding the cat that she is familiar with. Best Wishes from all of us at Cats Cradle Rescue for a smooth trouble-free move.
