Excerpts from the Holy Scriptures are the main points for discussions in the articles, though other sources may be used. There is no attempt to correlate the articles with the Scripture readings at the Mass for that particular Sunday, nor liturgical seasons. The homily is the appropriate forum for this. Only vague references to time are used, such as: in ancient times, in biblical times, in the modern era, at the end of the ages. Since a thousand years are as a day in the sight of God, one cannot be more specific. The articles are from a Catholic viewpoint with no specific reference to other religions or denominations. Political commentary is studiously avoided. This is the first and last time that the United States or any country (except Israel) is referenced. General terms such as “the tumult of the nations” are employed. Specifically, the articles are meant to engender hope in the heart of the reader, a heart which is the gateway or the portal to God’s favors. In conclusion, let us take an example summarizing the foregoing. In Psalm 24 we read: “O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher ancient doors. Let him enter, the King of Glory!” Who is the King of Glory? He is the Lord, the Almighty! And so we have Psalm 24 exhorting us to open the gates of our hearts to God, and a Portal of Hope that God will contin- ue to pour his grace and the Holy Spirit into the depths of our being. CATHOLIC PORTALS OF HOPE

Herein is a review of the principles used in composing these bi-weekly articles, which begin this date. Excerpts from the Holy Scriptures are the main points for discussions in the articles, though other sources may be used. There is no attempt to correlate the articles

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Happy New Year! Consider making a powerful New Year's resolution to become more involved with the Church Communities at St Patrick’s and St. James. The Knights of Columbus are looking for Catholic gentlemen to join our Council and better serve our Church Community. If you or someone you know would like to know more about what we do please contact Marty Soth at (530) 647-0980. Crab Feed - In years past the Knights of Columbus have hosted a crab feed at the end of January as a means to raise funds to pay for the transportation cost to send a bus load of folks from St Patrick and St. James to the Walk For Life event in San Francisco. This year due to an algae bloom the harvesting of crabs off the coast of California and Oregon is currently prohibited. Consequently, our annual crab feed will be replaced with a Tri-tip dinner. The event will still have the wonderful raffle and bar. The Knights of Columbus hope that our Community of St Patrick and St. James will continue to help support this important fundraiser. More details to follow in the coming weeks. Jeffrey Lubenko, Grand Knight, Council 6322

Ladies Society News Tickets go on sale this weekend for our Winter Night’s Stew Dinner. We are featuring the Country Western Band, The Random Strangers. Get your tickets early as I am sure they will sell out fast. Tickets will be on sale December 26th through January 17th. Tickets can be purchased after the Masses or in the Parish office. No tickets will be sold at the door. Thank You,

Colette Polaski, President

SAVE THE DATE! The Winter Session of “Seasons of Hope”, a support group for those who have suffered the death of a loved one begins a new six-week program on Monday, February 1, 2016, 1:00-3:00 p.m. For more information and to register, contact Carol Davis: 530-748-9337.

CAREGIVER MINISTRY We have many people who visit, pray with, and give Communion to the sick and to shut-ins. Recently someone volunteered to relieve a full-time caregiver once a week. If you have the time and heart to relieve a caregiver, please call Larry Koncewicz at 916.996.8962. Or, if you need to have someone stop by your home for a visit, please call Larry or leave your information with Jeanne at the Parish Office.

CATHOLIC DIVORCE SUPPORT GROUP If, on your life’s journey, you have walked or are walking the rocky path of a Divorced Catholic, you may have considered the Annulment Process. What an annulment is and what it is not can be confusing. In our Year of Mercy, St Patrick’s Catholic Church is offering you the opportunity to investigate this process, find answers to your questions and consider whether you will take this path to what has been referred to as the “Eighth Sacrament”-- leading to healing and peace-of-mind. On Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. we will begin a 5-week program of support in a safe and confidential setting facilitated by people who have successfully completed this process. You are not alone! For more information or to register, call Carol Davis at 530-748-9337.

REPAIRS TO WALKWAY NEAR CLOTHES CLOSET A temporary repair has been made to the walkway that floods near the Clothes Closet. Our maintenance men constructed a small deck, placing it over the offending area. We painted the wood deck with an abrasive paint and added sand to the paint to make the deck surface gritty to help avoid slips. It will cost us a few thousand dollars to repair the collapsed drain line which requires removing and replacing the concrete sidewalk. Hopefully that project will be completed in the near future.

CLOTHES CLOSET The Clothes Closet needs brown bags. Please drop them off at the Clothes Closet Monday-Friday 9:30AM-12:30PM. Also, the Clothes Closet could use volunteers. If you’re able to work once a week or once a month please give Belinda a call at 530.621.7773. Thank you!

DONATIONS TO MOTHER TERESA MATERNITY HOME & THE UPPER ROOM We have several parishioners who regularly give to the Mother Teresa Maternity Home and the Upper Room. In the future, please make any checks payable to the MTMH or Upper Room and not to Saint Patrick Church. Thank you for your continued generosity.

MOTHER TERESA MATERNITY HOME ANNUAL DINNER & AUCTION We hope you’ll join us on the evening of February 6th, 2016 for the 13th Annual Dinner and Auction benefiting the Mother Teresa Maternity Home. We encourage you to make your reservations early. Please contact Viki Uribe (916) 765-3232 ([email protected]) for

ticket information. www.motherteresamatenityhome.com

A SPECIAL THANK YOU! To all the parishioners who participated in the “Christmas Giving Tree”...thanks so much. A special thanks to the newly organized Giving Tree Committee (Colette Polaski, Anita York, Sue Holderegger and Ginny Yates) and Al and Hope Cuellar for the many hours they spent organizing the project. To the many individuals who donated gifts for the children, wrapped gifts and distributed the gifts on pick up day...thank you… you are all so wonderful!!! Special thanks to Dignity Health, Rancho Cordova, for sponsoring families the last three years. Your generosity made this Christmas memorable for so many children.

A DAY OF RECOLLECTION The Ladies Society of Saint Patrick invites all women of the parish community to join them in a Day of Recollection. There is no cost to you. The event takes place on Saturday, January 16, 2016. It will be 9am – 3pm in Gurnell Hall with lunch being provided. The theme will be “Weaving the Tapestry of Mercy: How am I called to receive and live the love and mercy of God in a chaotic world?” facilitated by Kathy Pooler. She is a spiritual director, retreat facilitator, artist and retired businesswoman. If you wish to attend, we ask you to register by completing the registration form which will be included in a flyer insert in the this bulletin. You may drop the registration in the collection basket or drop it off at the Parish Office.

January 6th is the FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY – the day that the 3 Kings, las tres reinas, arrived to visit the baby Jesus. They came bearing gifts to the King of Kings, just as we bring ourselves to Jesus every day!
