27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR C OCTOBER 2, 2016

OCTOBER IS RIGHT TO LIFE MONTH By John Erdag, Director of Parish Life

Human life is a gift from God. And as a gift from God, every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. Catholic teaching is that the life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition. Respected and protected. That leads us Catholics to actively work for a world of greater commitment to justice, understanding and mercy in areas such as abortion, infertility, adoption, capital punishment, elderly care and euthanasia/physician assisted suicide.

October is Right to Life Month throughout the world and we are dedicating the month to focusing and acting on this foremost Catholic teaching. Our plan includes ongoing education, prayer, and advocacy efforts to mobilize our SJN community on these issues of life, justice, and peace. Some of the activities we have planned include:

• Pennies From Heaven – coin containers will be at the church exits all month long for donations to help the local Respect Life shelters. Bring your coins and dollar bills to donate. We’ll also be passing out baby bottles if you’d like to take home and return filled with coins.

• Rosary Walk – scheduled October 15th immediately after the 8:30 Mass, as a large group, we’ll walk around the city block praying a rosary in intercession for all phases of life.

• Hope For Wellness – will hold an event focused on healing after painful loss of life.

• Tootsie Roll drive – Knights of Columbus will be passing out Tootsie Rolls and seeking donations to help organizations focused on special needs children.

• Brochures & Learning Aids – brochures, flyers and guides to provide information on Right to Life issues, resources for help and healing, and ways to learn more about Catholic social teachings.

• Diocesan Events – various activities will be hosted throughout the diocese. We’ll keep you apprised of these events for your participation.

God is love, and he desires that we help to build a “civilization of love”—one in which all human beings have the freedom and opportunity to experience the love of God and live out that love by making a free gift of themselves to one another. The right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of his love.

ST TERESA'S ORPHANAGE, ENSENADA Thank you to Sheila Tomlin for making Christmas stockings again for the children of St Teresa's Orphanage, and to the SJN Youth Group through Samantha Leveugle for agreeing to provide the children with decorated candy canes. I am planning the Christmas party for the orphanage on Dec. 10 and I hope to have the names and ages of the children in early October with the angel tree on display in the church courtyard on Oct. 23. If you take an angel off the tree you agree to purchase a Christmas gift for that child, wrap it, and deliver it to one of 4 drop off points in Irvine by the Nov 20 deadline. Please note, I will be unable to display the angel tree on Sat. 10/22, so if you usually attend that Mass and want an angel, please contact me at [email protected] of 949-551-4504 (or go back on Sunday and pick which one you want).

I spoked with the nuns at the orphanage regarding their special needs this year. They stated their furniture is very old and they need new furniture and are trying to put bathrooms into each bedroom (3 children in a bedroom). Since I do not have a big truck to load furniture across the border (and since Customs will charge on donations over $500 per car), I am thinking the only way we can assist them is through money. If you would like to make a donation toward this, they prefer cash to checks (because of the exchange rates) but if you want a tax receipt for the donation, you can make a check payable to ECOI (Ebell Club of Irvine) annotated for orphanage. ECOI is a 501c3 organization and I will give you a receipt for tax purposes. If you do not see me in church or at the angel tree 10/23, you can mail a check to me at 5142 Chateau Cir, Irvine 92604-3171.

Effective September 23, 2016, Rev. Alex Kim, pastor of St. John Neumann Parish, is on administrative leave. Subject to this leave, Rev. Kim will not engage in public ministry at St. John Neumann or other parishes and/or ministries in the Diocese of Orange.

After careful review and consultation, this action was taken by Most. Rev. Kevin Vann for the spiritual care of the people of St. John Neumann Church. This administrative leave is unrelated to the Diocesan Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.

Rev. Martin Bui, parochial vicar, will lead the parish spiritually and organizationally until an interim pastoral administrator is appointed in the coming weeks. If you have questions about this transition please direct them to Fr. Martin Bui.

We ask for your continued prayers for Fr. Alex Kim. We also ask that you continue to pray for our parish family as we move forward in faith together.
