“What type of faith is great? What do I do with my story? Do I hide it? We must bring it to the Lord. Let us go to Jesus, knock on Jesus’s heart, and say to Him, ‘Lord, if You will it, You can heal me.' Jesus loves us as we are, without make-up, with a love and compassion that bears our sins, our mistakes, and our failures. Jesus so tremendously wants our well-being. We are the weakness of his love."-- Pope Francis

In the Company of Pope Francis

FROM YOUR PASTOR

How do you find meaning in your Suffering? How do you find meaning in your Brokenness? How do you find meaning in an Uncertain World? HOW ARE YOU HEALED?

The World shapes us. The Popular Culture shapes us. Our Family and Friends shape us. These forces can lead us to Conversion, Trans-formation, and Hope...or they can lead us to Pain, Misfortune, and Sin.

The First Letter of Saint Peter reminds us -- 'Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.'

It is the Devil who rules THIS WORLD -- the crimes against fundamental HUMAN DIGNITY and life, the selfishness and self-absorption that place ME BEFORE YOU, the physical and emotional scars of ABUSE AND NEGLECT that shape a lifetime, and the MEANNESS requiring that you either fit in or get out.

But it is our FAITH that defines how we respond to these forces -- Spiritually, Emotionally, Psychologically, Physically, or Financially.

As a people of HOPE, we cannot be overwhelmed by difficulties and absorbed by fears. Ironically, our HOPE is tempered not from the absence of problems, but from the Presence of God in those problems.

Saint Peter goes on to assure us that we are NOT ALONE in the battle AGAINST EVIL -- 'Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little.'

But there is more...as a people of FAITH and HOPE, we are also a people of LOVE and COMPASSION -- a People of COMMUNI-TY...WE ARE THE CHURCH.

In this time of Pandemic, WE turn to Our Heavenly Father, Jesus, His Blessed Mother...AND TO EACH OTHER. We minister to the Vulnerable... the Disconnected...the Victims...the Invisible...

We MINISTER to...those who are isolated for health reasons...those whose jobs have evaporated temporarily or permanently...those whose businesses have been destroyed by riots...those who are abused or neglected...those who have contemplated suicide out of fear or loneliness...those individuals and families who do not have enough food each day...those whose incomes have declined jeopardizing their rent or mortgage...those who are OUR SISTERS AND BROTHERS IN CHRIST in need of HEALING...

A HEALED SOUL needs a HEALED BODY...and YOU are in PARTNERSHIP with the HEALING PHYSICIAN JESUS CHRIST! YOU are His Hands, His Feet, His Mind...and HIS HEART!

To HEAL THE WORLD, we must also HEAL OURSELVES. This 'Time Out' can be both of time of COMPASSION TOWARD OTH-ERS and a TIME OF INTROSPECTION ON OUR OWN LIFE. Rarely do we get this opportunity. In the TRAGEDY OF PANDEMIC, we can PERFECT OURSELVES as we MINISTER TO OTHERS.

But COMPASSION involves RISK. Jesus showed us that FROM THE CROSS. We risk OUR BODY when we physically reach out to those in need. We risk OUR MIND when we search for solutions to those who are suffering physically, emotionally, or financially. We risk OUR HEART when we use this time to cure the generational effects of racism, elitism, and neglect. We risk OUR SOUL when we do nothing...

This is the essence of the words from the Gospel of Saint Matthew -- 'For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.'

In LOOSING our life TO OTHERS, we are GIVING our life FOR OTHERS.

In this way, EACH OF US BECOMES A FIRST RESPONDER...and PART OF THE CURE.

And it is this Christian Call To Action FOR OTHERS that can become part of our own PANDEMIC HEALING AND CONVER-SION...helping YOU find meaning in Your Suffering, aiding in the healing of Your Brokenness, and giving purpose to Your Isolation.

+May God Bless You and Keep You+

-Very Reverend Ronald W Cattany

Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time

I love how Peter had his great moment of faith, and the accompanying praise from Jesus. He got it right! Had he been coming to this world-changing insight for weeks, maybe years? Or, like so many things that the Holy Spirit reveals, did it just impulsively pour out of his heart? You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God! he cried. And right away he knew that he was right.

Jesus brought him front and center, and announced to all the disciples that Peter was BLESSED, and it was upon his very faith the whole Church would be built. And then Peter, God bless him, brand-new in possession of the keys to the kingdom, opened his mouth again, and, well, that was a mistake.

Exactly two verses later (Matthew 16:23), when Jesus predicted his murder to his horrified friends, Peter, his new BFF, took him aside to correct him. You’ve got it all wrong! Nothing like that will ever happen to you!

And, just like that, Peter went from first place to last. How could he have gotten it so wrong, so fast? Peter, who just minutes before had possessed a great supernatural truth, was now a SATAN, a tempter who was trying to give Jesus a way out. And Jesus, through a lifetime of prayer, must have steeled himself from any ways out from the cross he knew awaited him.

Get behind me, Jesus said. Don’t lead my disciples into magical thinking. The cross, he knew, would await every one of The Twelve. Peter himself got behind Jesus and met his own crucifixion in Rome. The faith of the earliest Christians is the Rock (Petra) of our faith too.

In what ways was Peter’s impetuousness a help and a hindrance to Jesus’ mission?

SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Saint Philip Neri, Pray for Us

Saint of the Week

Saint Augustine of Hippo

A Christian at 33, a priest at 36, a bishop at 41: Many people are familiar with the bio-graphical sketch of Augustine of Hippo, sinner turned saint. But really to get to know the man is a rewarding ex-perience.

There quickly surfaces the in-tensity with which he lived his life, whether his path led away from or toward God. The tears of his mother, the in-structions of Ambrose and, most of all, God himself speak-ing to him in the Scriptures, redi-rected Augustine’s love of life to a life of love.

Having been so deeply immersed in creature-pride of life in his early days and having drunk deeply of its bitter dregs, it is not surprising that Augustine should have turned, with a holy fierceness, against the many demon-thrusts rampant in his day. His times were truly decadent: politically, socially, morally. He was both feared and loved, like the Master. The perennial criticism leveled against him: a fundamental rigorism.

In his day, Augustine providentially fulfilled the office of prophet. Like Jeremiah and other greats, he was hard-pressed but could not keep quiet. “I say to myself, I will not mention him/I will speak in his name no more/But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart/imprisoned in my bones/I grow weary holding it in/I cannot endure it” (Jeremiah 20:9).

Augustine is still acclaimed and condemned in our day. He is a prophet for today, trumpeting the need to scrap escapisms and stand face-to-face with personal responsibility and digni-ty.

Monday through Friday, our volunteers give out 20-30 bags of food each day at our food pantry. Each bag of food includes a tuna lunch, chicken noodle soup, chili, peanut butter, peaches, a bot-tle of water, a can of V8, a sleeve of saltines and a granola bar. Each bag costs us about $8.00.

These bags are accessible for anyone in need. We serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness and neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

For $40 a week, you could help us feed a brother or sister in need.

Thank you for your generosity.
