Per Merano la ricerca del benessere è uno stile di vita fi-glio di un’eredità storica. nella prima metà del XiX secolo il dottor Johann nepomuk Huber, giunto a Merano a seguito della nobildonna viennese Mathilde von schwarzenberg, scrisse un libretto in cui decantava le virtù terapeutiche del-la città, celebrando fra le altre la cura al siero di latte e quel-la dell’uva. sempre più ospiti cominciarono a soggiornare a Merano, e nel 1870 arrivò l’imperatrice sissi con la sua fi-glioletta valerie. anche franz Kafka cercò qui benefici per la sua salute. nel solco di questa tradizione, Merano oggi si è evoluta in luogo di benessere dove la salute va a braccetto con il piacere. for Merano, the search for well-being is a lifestyle born of a rich history. in the first half of the 19th century, dr Johann nepomuk Huber travelled to Merano as personal physician to the viennese noblewoman Mathilde von schwarzenberg, and wrote a brochure extolling the therapeutic virtues of the city while also celebrating its whey and grape cures. More and more guests began to stay in Merano, and in 1870 the empress sissi arrived with her little daughter valerie. franz Kafka too sought to improve his health here. following on from this tradition, Merano today has evolved into an oasis of well-being, where health goes hand-in-hand with pleas-ure. Well-being in its wider, physical meaning, but also in the spiritual sense, in an ambience of abundant vegetation, with a mild climate, constant contact with nature, and pure waters. on the subject of water, the city centre now boasts

Walkers will learn to love Merano. the network of paths in and around the city offers quiet walks and refreshing breaks. Called the “garden city”, its name is fully mer-ited on account of the greenery that thrives in the many parks and the natural sculptures along the routes, from the central promenade along the River Passirio (the “Kurpromenade”), or the romantic Gilf walk, its benches inscribed with poetic stanzas, that links up with the Tap-peiner walk: from a height of 380 metres, this 3-km route gives you a panorama over the bowl in which Merano lies. there are also spectacular views to be had along the “Waalwege”, the quiet paths along the ancient channels that are still used to irrigate the vineyards and orchards dotting the landscape. passes the valley bowl and allows walkers to cover the area of the city on 11 routes along a trail totalling 80 km in length. as a tribute to sissi’s passion for walking, a route named after her links the city centre to Trauttmansdorff Castle (a former residence of the austrian empress), leading past ivy-covered residences and silent estates. those wanting more of a challenge will find fertile ground on the mountain summits surrounding the city, which can also easily be reached via the various lift systems. the Alta Via Meranese (Merano high-level route) is an 80-km circuit that reaches a height of 3,000 metres in the wonderful scenery of the Tessa Group Nature Park, and can be completed in 7-8 days. Merano 2000, with its new, futuristic cabin lift, is a ski area in winter and a walker’s paradise all year round.

Whatever your favourite sport, Merano has something to offer. if golf is your preference, there are two splendid locations for golfers just outside the city: a 9-hole course situated among orchards at Brandis near lana, 15 min-utes away by car, and the golfclub val Passiria (18 holes) located in the scenic Passirio valley, a drive of some 20 minutes. in the city centre, tennis fans have a choice of clay or indoor courts at the Tennis Club. there is also the racecourse, covering an area of forty hectares where, since 1935, the Grand Prix Merano Forst has been run, a spectacular steeplechase that represents the pinnacle of the racing season. these horses are to be admired, but there are also endless possibilities for riding, with excursions among the meadows and forests

around the city. from saddleback to saddle: cycling is an ideal way to discover Merano, with free bike hire also available. the city centre boasts a large network of cy-cle paths that extends into the surrounding countryside. there is also the inviting “bici+treno” (bike+train) offer: travel by train along the val venosta, then pedal back home along a gentle cycle route. More athletic types can attempt the various mountain bike routes leading up to the summits. Winter naturally offers plenty of snow, with the various ski areas – first and foremost Merano 2000, with its 40 kilometres of pistes and rapid access via the new cable car facility – offering something for all the family, whether downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing or nordic walking.

il calendario meranese è per tradizione un susseguirsi di manifestazioni. intorno al 1900, quando la città di-venne località di soggiorno tra le più rinomate d’euro-pa, il Kurhaus era già elegante cornice di eventi. oggi ospita congressi, esposizioni, balli, anche e soprattutto concerti tra cui quelli delle Settimane Musicali Mera-nesi, festival di musica classica con orchestre e diret-tori di spessore internazionale. alcuni dei castelli che troneggiano sulla città sono invece stati riconvertiti in musei. un esempio è Castel Tirolo, antica residenza dei conti del tirolo, sede del museo storico-culturale della provincia. nelle sale di Castel Trauttmansdorff si racconta invece l’evoluzione del turismo in alto adige. attorno al maniero si distende un giardino dove pro-sperano 80 diversi ambienti botanici. Just about everywhere in Merano is steeped in art and histo-ry. this is particularly noticeable along the Portici, the heart of the city: this is a street lined with rows of shops, 400 me-tres long, that dates back to Mainardo ii and the 13th century. today the eye is above all caught by the display windows of the stores and boutiques, offering local handicrafts, gastro-nomic specialties and the latest fashions. Modern stores are housed between ancient walls, looking out over hidden inner courtyards and linked by stairs and passageways. at the top end of the Portici rises the Cathedral of Saint Nicolò, the city’s patron saint. History is also present along the banks of the river Passirio where, surrounded by the green of the summer Promenade, can be found the statue of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth (sissi), a homage to the icon of Merano’s tourist tradition. oggigiorno i viaggiatori si mettono alla ricerca di ristoranti con i loro smartphone, twittano dritte e consigli e mostrano ai loro amici su Facebook le foto delle vacanze. Con le loro valutazioni sui portali on-line i turisti influenzano l’umore di albergatori e ristoratori in tempo reale: non esistono più 365 giorni di sole. in questa mostra, il touriseum illustra le profonde trasformazioni intercorse per viaggiatori e popolazione ospitante nell’area vacanze alto adige dall’apertura del museo nel 2003.

travellers can nowadays use their smartphones to look for restaurants, tweet their top tips and let their friends see their holiday snaps on Facebook. online portals allow guests to rate the hotels and restaurants they visit in real time – much to the chagrin of the proprietors, who are no longer able to claim the sun shines all year round. this exhibition at the touriseum illustrates the profound changes that have affected travellers and locals alike in the holiday land of south tyrol since the museum’s opening in 2003.

Un romantico trasognato alla ricerca delle sue radici, un’impe-ratrice che non ne poteva più di stare a casa, la sua figlia cagio-nevole di salute, un imperatore alla ricerca della sua imperatri-ce, un guerriero al servizio degli asburgo, un barone tedesco innamorato pazzo di merano, veterani di guerra impiegati come contadini: hanno tutti alloggiato, per breve o lungo tempo, a Castel trauttmansdorff, segnando così il corso della sua storia fino a oggi. La nuova mostra permanente nelle stanze storiche del castello dedica a ognuno dei suoi illustri inquilini un lumi-noso monumento.

a dreamy romantic in search of his roots; an empress who could not bear life at home; her sickly daughter; an emperor in search of his empress; an old warhorse in the service of the Habsburgs; a german baron infatuated with merano; war vet-erans who took up farming. they all stayed at trauttmansdorff Castle for various lengths of time, influencing its place in histo-ry right up until the present day. the new permanent exhibition in the historic rooms of the castle dedicates a shining monu-ment to each of these illustrious inhabitants.

Che oggetti colleziona il touriseum? Che dimensioni ha la sua raccolta? Come arrivano gli oggetti al touriseum e cosa accade loro all’interno del museo? i visitatori troveranno risposta a queste domande nel “Peepshow degli oggetti”. nell’ambito dell’iniziativa a livello provinciale “anno degli oggetti museali”, il touriseum mostra, sulla scorta di esempi particolari, che gli oggetti esposti sono solo una piccola parte della collezione del museo. di essa i visitatori ottengono un rapido assaggio. inoltre possono comprendere quali oggetti sono interessanti per un museo del turismo e che tipo di lavoro si nasconde dietro le attività di collezione e conservazione.

what sort of objects does the touriseum collect? How large is its collection? How do the objects come to the touriseum and what happens to them once they get there? visitors can find the answers to these and other questions in the “objects Peepshow”: as part of the “Year of the object” in south tyrol, the touriseum will be using specially selected examples to show that the ob-jects on display are just a fraction of its total inventory, thereby giving visitors a glimpse of its collection. they will also learn what objects are of interest to a museum of tourism and what is involved in collecting and keeping the museum objects.

igiene e bellezza sono da migliaia di anni un tema importante. Un aspetto importante nella storia culturale dell’umanità è la cultura del corpo, l’igiene, il bagno. mentre nel medioevo il ba-gno era una pratica comunissima, anche se non per motivi pri-mariamente igienici, l’atteggiamento nei confronti dell’acqua si modificò in maniera radicale a partire dal 16° secolo. Questo non significa che non esistesse alcuna cura del corpo, piuttosto vige-vano altre norme di pulizia. verranno costruite le prime stanze da bagno nelle case dei ricchi, e iniziò a diffondersi il bidet e la tinozza per lavarsi. L’impiego dell’acqua per la pulizia serviva an-che come tratto distintivo della borghesia rispetto ad un’aristo-crazia affettata e rammollita che usava ancora cipria e profumo. all’inizio del XiX sec. nacque il concetto di igiene, che comprende gli strumenti e le conoscenze per il mantenimento della salute.

Hygiene and beauty have been of importance for thousands of years. an important aspect in the cultural history of humanity is the culture of the body, hygiene and bathing.while in the middle ages bathing was commonly practised, even if not primarily for hygienic reasons, attitudes to water changed radically at the beginning of the 16th century. this does not mean that there was no form of body care: rather that other standards of cleansing held sway. the first bathrooms were constructed in the houses of the rich, with the bidet and the washbasin begin-ning to gain in popularity. the use of water for cleansing pur-poses was also distinguishing feature of the bourgeoisie when compared to the affected, decadent aristocracy who still used powder and scent. at the beginning of the 19th century the con-cept of hygiene was born, including the equipment and knowl-edge required for the maintenance of one’s health.

Cindy sherman é considerata una delle artiste più importanti del nostro tempo. saranno esposti video e fotografie che risalgono ai primi anni della sua attività artistica e che le hanno procurato notorietà. durante i suoi studi sherman ha realizzato numerose fo-tografie accomunate dal tema della metamorfosi, in cui si fondono elementi del teatro e del cinema. da più di 35 anni l’artista rappre-senta una molteplicità di ruoli e identità femminili attraverso la gestualità, la posa, il travestimento, la mimica ed il make-up.

Cindy sherman is regarded as one of the most important artists of our time. on display are videos and photos that go back to the early years of her artistic activity and brought her fame. during her studies, sherman took numerous photos linked by the theme of metamorphosis, in which elements of the theatre and cinema are mixed. For over 35 years, this artist has depicted a multiplic-ity of feminine roles and identities through the expressiveness of gesture, pose, disguise, mime and make-up.
