Instructions to the Examiner or Administrator : Total time should be not more than 45 mins
1. Please show the enclosed picture to the students. Ask them to identify
the music composer shown in the picture. Clues can be given as that she is a famous singer who has sung in the UN and has acted in films etc.
2. Please play track 1 from the enclosed CD. Students should be asked to
identify the type of composition of the vocal music piece played to them from the CD.
3. Track 2 from the CD shall be played next. Students are asked to listen
carefully to the track being played and identify: i. the name of the composer of the music piece ii. the mudhra of that composer Note: If the students have identified the composer and the mudhra – then
don’t waste time by playing the full track. Go on to the next track. 4. A vocal musical form is recorded as Track 3. Please play Track 3 and
ask the students to listen carefully. They are told that the music piece is the charanam of a krithi. There are two types of Manodharma Sangeetham in the music that they are listening. They are asked to identify the names of two types of Manodharma Sangeetham.
5. Please play track 4 from the CD. It is an instrumental piece of music.
Please ask the students to listen carefully and to identify the following: i. the type of janya raga (eg. Whether it’s a sampoorna or vajra or
shadava etc>) ii. Name 3 of 4 musical instruments participating in the music piece.

1st May 2004 6. Track 5 from the CD is played. Students should listen to the music
piece carefully and identify the tempo or kala or speed of the composition being sung.
7. Play the track 6 from the enclosed CD. The students are asked to listen
to that music composition. This type of music composition is on Lord Krishna. The students are asked to identify:
i. composer of this type of music composition ii. the language in which the composer composed this type of
music composition 8. The next piece of music is from track 7 of the CD is an instrumental
music. The students should listen carefully to the music piece and are told that the raga of that music piece is a Melakartha raga. The students are then told to identify whether that raga has prati madhyamam or suddha madhyamam.
9. Track 8 of the CD is played for this question. It is a thani avarthanam of
percussion instruments (thala vadhyam). There are 4 percussion instruments participating in that thani avarthanam. Students are told to listen carefully to the percussion instruments and identify two (2) of the 4 percussion instruments.
10. A part of a music instrument is shown to the students and they have to
identify the part.
Please make notes and inform the Academy should there be any concerns with the Audio Visual Examination. The tracks recorded in the CD are within the Grade’s syllabus
