1. HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOURSELF?

Before you begin to plan for your future, you need to know what you are like now. The following activities will help you to find out about yourself… What are the best things about you? What do you need to improve?

1A: “YES, I CAN!”

You must be able to see yourself in a confident, positive light in order to develop a good sense of direction for the future. One way you can do this is by affirming or expressing confident thoughts about yourself to others. This activity will help you express confidence in yourself.

Today, you are going to learn how to develop the “Yes, I Can” attitude in yourself by expressing these thoughts to others. LIST AT LEAST FIVE THINGS BELOW THAT YOU FEEL YOU CAN DO. It can be anything from taking care of a pet to telling jokes really well. It can be school things, leisure-time things, a skill in sports, art, music … anything!

After lists are completed, go around the room and share at least one item on each list. When it is your turn, begin by saying “Yes, I can…” then add your response.

After the group has shared responses, ask yourself these questions: How did it feel to express yourself? Did you feel like you were bragging? Were you hesitant to say something, fearing someone would laugh or

make fun of what you said?

This is the thinking that keeps us from feeling confident. How many felt good sharing positive things about themselves? If you practice saying good things about yourself and listening to positive things about others, the easier and more comfortable it will be.

Did You Know? If you practice saying things in front of a mirror, it can

help you gain confidence.

2A: EIGHTH GRADE CAN HELP

Your eighth grade year is very important and can really set the tone for all you can accomplish for yourself in high school. Keep the following in mind: 1. Grades

a. Make sure you pass all of your classes. This will help you to prepare for high school where you must repeat a class if you fail it. Attach your current grade report and answer the following questions:

Are you passing all of your classes? If not, what can you do to make sure that you do pass? This will be good practice for next year in high school.

2. Participation Statistics show that kids who participate in extra-curricular activities do better in

school. In order to participate in extra-curricular activities, you must be passing all of your classes.

In athletics there is an academic eligibility standard that is enforced at all levels and in every sport.

You can participate in athletics, music programs, clubs, student government, drama, and many other activities.

There are also many activities outside of school that include 4-H, Scouting, church youth groups, community volunteerism, club sports, intramural programs and many more.

3. Career Prep Activities There are many career prep activities designed for eighth grade students. These

include career exploration, Career Day, job-shadowing, CTE visitation, college visit, and other cool stuff.

4. Begin Your Portfolio Now that you’ve started learning about yourself, you need a place to collect and save

all of the information you’re gathering. A portfolio is a place to bring your best quality material together and save it. Your portfolio must document your skills in the areas of academic teamwork and personal management. See the next page for more details.

2. HOW DO I GET READY FOR HIGH SCHOOL?

Now that you have started learning about yourself, you need a place to collect and save this information. Think about all the information that you get every day from home and school. Your portfolio is a place to bring your best quality material together and save it.

1. Q: WHAT IS A PORTFOLIO ANYWAY? A: A portfolio is a summary of you. Such

things as grades, attendance, career plans, tests, awards, and other important data can be stored in your portfolio.

2. Q: A FRIEND TOLD ME THAT I WILL NEED SOMETHING CALLED EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS TO GET A JOB SOMEDAY. WHAT ARE THESE?

A. Employability skills are the attitudes, behaviors, and skills that will be required of you to get and hold a job. These skills are considered to be essential for everyone, whether they are going to college or immediately entering the workforce.

3. Q: WHY DO I NEED TO PUT THINGS INTO A PORTFOLIO?

A: Michigan's businesses need you to be a prepared worker: one capable of solving problems, working in teams, making decisions, and communicating with others. Competition in the world is tough. Businesses need prepared workers in order to survive. Things in your portfolio will show employers how good you are and how good you could be if they hire you.

4. Q: IS A PORTFOLIO DIFFERENT FROM OTHER RECORDS KEPT BY MY SCHOOL?

A: Yes. The portfolio is your property; decisions as to what to keep in it are made by you. (Hint: Employers are looking for quality materials.) The school, and maybe partners from industry, will assist you in developing it.

5. Q: WHAT KIND OF "PROOF" IS INCLUDED IN A PORTFOLIO? A: Information from sources inside or outside

of school such as test scores, attendance awards, part-time work, volunteer work, sports, or experiences in scouting could go inside.

6. Q: I'M QUITE INVOLVED HERE IN SCHOOL. CAN THESE ACTIVITIES BE INCLUDED IN MY PORTFOLIO?

A: Certainly! The activity is matched with the appropriate skill area and stored with your portfolio dividers.

7. Q: I JUST STARTED SOMETHING CALLED CAREER PREP. DOES THIS FIT IN MY PORTFOLIO?

A: Yes, these activities are a very important part of your portfolio-building process.

8. Q: I'M NOT SURE WHAT I WANT TO DO YET IN LIFE. CAN I TAKE THIS PORTFOLIO ON A JOB INTERVIEW OR, HOW ABOUT TO A COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY?

A: Excellent idea! Your portfolio says good things about you. Keep it up-to-date and you can use it the rest of your life.

9. Q: CAN MY FAMILY HELP ME COMPLETE MY PORTFOLIO?

A: Your family can and should help you. They may know good things about you that no one else knows. Ask for their help!

A portfolio helps you in several ways. Pursuing further education and preparing for a career or military service are future goals to begin working toward. Strengthening your skills today aims you in the right direction. A skill is the ability to do something well. You may be surprised at how many skills you already have.

The portfolio itself does not guarantee employment or admission to a college or the military. Some employers may ask to see your portfolio; others may not. The important thing is to know your skills and abilities. You will be prepared to discuss your skills and perhaps convince an employer to hire you or a college to admit you.

Your portfolio must prove skill in the areas of: Teamwork, Academic, and Personal Management. SEE THE APPENDIX FOR PAGES THAT WILL HELP YOU TO BETTER UNDERSTAND YOUR PORTFOLIO.

2. HOW DO I GET READY FOR HIGH SCHOOL?

2D: WHAT ARE CAREER PATHWAYS?

Career Pathways are careers that are grouped together because the people who have those careers have the same or similar skills, interests and abilities. There are many different kinds of careers in every career pathway. In Michigan we use the following six pathways: 1. ARTS AND COMMUNICATION

2. BUSINESS, MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, AND TECHNOLOGY

3. ENGINEERING/MANUFACTURING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

4. HEALTH SCIENCES

5. HUMAN SERVICES

6. NATURAL RESOURCES AND AGRISCIENCE In eighth grade we will do many activities to help you decide which pathway you like best.

2E: WHAT IS AN EDP?

The initials E.D.P. stand for Educational Development Plan. It is your personal road map through your chosen Career Pathway. It is your plan to get you from where you are today to where you want to be in the future. Your EDP contains your career goals, high school classes, both required and selected, and plans for the future. FAQ’s Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Can I change my mind? Of course. If you change your mind, you change your plan. Knowing how to plan is the most important part of writing your EDP

2. Who will help me write my EDP? Your family can be a great help. Talk to your parents about your future goals. Your guidance counselor, teachers, and career prep coordinator will also be happy to help you.

3. What do I do with my EDP when it is finished? It’s never finished. It is a work in progress. Keep a copy in your portfolio. Your guidance counselor will also have a copy that you will review every year. You will schedule your high school classes from your EDP. You can revise it if your career goals change.

2C: WHAT ARE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AND WHY DO WE HAVE THEM?

The State of Michigan has determined that all graduates must pass certain classes in English, Math, Science and Social Studies. You also must earn a credit in Physical Education, Health, and Visual, Applied or Performing Arts, along with at least 20 online hours. Your school will also have some local requirements. Completing all of these requirements increases your options after high school and makes sure that Michigan has highly educated citizens.

5. THEY CAN’T DO THAT...OR CAN THEY?

WHAT ARE SOME PROBLEMS WITH NON-TRADITIONAL OCCUPATIONS?

While non-traditional occupations offer many opportunities and advantages for men and women, there are problems that may arise for non-traditional workers.

Occupational Segregation Occupational segregation, the separation of sexes because of job requirements, still exists in the American workplace. Women are the dominant gender in only 20 of 440 Department of Labor job classifications. In 187 occupations, 90% of the workforce consists of one gender. Currently, 11% of women workers are in non-traditional jobs.

Social and Cultural Isolation Many people still hold to the belief that there is "men's work" and "women's work." Results of stereotyping can include the isolation of the non-traditional student or worker by family, friends, and co-workers.

Sexual Harassment The 1964 Civil Rights Act protects workers from sexual harassment, both by employers and co-workers. Any unwelcome behavior that is sexual in nature is considered sexual harassment.

5A: NON-TRADITIONAL OCCUPATIONS

WHY CONSIDER A NON-TRADITIONAL OCCUPATION?

Career Opportunities Non-traditional jobs usually offer workers greater job mobility, independence, transferable skills, on-the-job training, and career growth.

Job Rewards Many people in non-traditional occupations find the work fulfilling, challenging, and satisfying. Many enjoy the financial rewards and independence.

Pay and Benefits Non-traditional jobs have, in the past, provided workers with higher wages and better benefits than traditional jobs. Women in traditional jobs are earning 64% to 70% of male salaries. When girls choose not to take math and science courses, they cut future opportunities. Many times males are promoted more rapidly in non-traditional fields than if they would

have chosen a traditional career.

Cost of Living/Need to Work Changes in society have dictated that more and more women leave the home for employment. About half of all married couples have both husband and wife working. 16% of American households are headed by women. The average woman can expect to spend 29 years of her life working. Two out of three persons entering the workforce will be women.

HOW CAN AN INDIVIDUAL ENTER A NON-TRADITIONAL OCCUPATION?

People who wish to prepare for a non-traditional occupation must take the same steps as those considering any other career.

Examine Personal Interests and Aptitudes Explore non-traditional occupations. Talk to people you know who are in non-traditional occupations to learn from them the

rewards/difficulties they have experienced in choosing a non-traditional career.

Study the Local Job Market There are many local sources to help determine labor market demands and the potential for employability of non-traditional students and workers. Those interested in non-traditional employment should visit local firms and talk to employees about potential job openings and training requirements. In addition, OIS provides current labor market information.

Acquire Skills Through Career-Technical Education (CTE) You can get skills needed to enter and succeed in some non-traditional occupations through career-technical programs offered by your high school.

Apprenticeship programs are gaining popularity among women and offer attractive "earn while you learn" benefits.

Many community colleges provide specialized programs designed to assist non-traditional students with tuition, counseling, support groups, child care, etc.

In conclusion, non-traditional occupations provide people opportunities to grow personally, professionally, and economically. Stereotypes hamper progress and strain personal relationships. With a more thorough understanding of non-traditional occupations, people will feel a greater respect for the pioneers who face the world as non-traditional.

6A: TIPS FOR FILLING OUT AN APPLICATION

Once you have an idea of where you would like to work, one of the first things you will need to do is to fill out an application.

Employers get a lot more from an application than facts and numbers. They check: neatness writing and reading skills spelling and grammar organizational skills

The application is one more chance for you to keep your name in the "prospective employee" file.

Treat the application with the respect that it demands and don't do a sloppy job!

Always print in blue ink. (Carry a pen.)

Don't forget to carry with you your pocket resume (page 28) containing all the im-portant facts about yourself.

Read every line and follow instructions carefully. If you are careful about this when you fill out your application, the interviewer will probably conclude that you are a careful worker, too.

Be neat. Print clearly so that it can be easily read.

Ask what is meant by abbreviations on the application if you don't know them.

List all types of education, experience, on-the-job training, job-shadowing, internship, externship experience, or hobbies that have given you skills for any type of work. Have dates, addresses, and names available.

Describe your previous work experience accurately and completely. Employers look for applications with skills, abilities, and experience. If you had a paper route, did babysitting, or did odd jobs, you should include these as well. Be sure to list the different types of machines and/or equipment you have operated.

If you have any special license or belong to a trade union or youth club, include that information.

Answer all questions on an application with the proper information. Do not write "see resume", even if you are going to attach one.

Be prepared to have three personal references with name, address, phone number, and job title. References should be used only with permission from that person. Call and alert this person that he/she may be getting a call.

Try to present the application in person to a management individual and dress accordingly.

Make sure you fill out the application. Employers want to know how well you read and write, not how well your friend or parents can write.

Think before you write to avoid mistakes.

If you do make a mistake, draw one line threw through it. Don’t blotch it out!

Put something in every space. The employer needs to know that you did read it, but it just doesn't fit your situation. If it doesn't apply, put "N/A" (this means it does not apply to you) or draw a line - - - in each box.

Follow all directions printed on the application. Show the employer that you can do what is expected of you.

Be as specific as possible with all of your answers.

Salary desired? Do not pin yourself down to a dollar figure. You may: oversell yourself and the employer will think you are too expensive. undersell yourself and ask for less than the employer was planning on

paying for that position. The best answers are:

"flexible" "negotiable" "open" "starting salary"

What you are saying with this type of answer is, "We'll talk about it later." You will probably come out ahead in the long run with answers like these.

Spell correctly. If you don't know how to spell a word, pick another word with the same meaning.

"What special skills or abilities do you have to offer?" Many applications ask a question like this one. DO NOT leave it blank! It is your chance to shine above everybody else. Practice a couple of short sentences that reflect a good image of you. If you haven't had a lot of work experiences, refer to a good work attitude, reliability, accuracy, etc. Pick whatever makes you look best, but be honest.

Be neat and accurate. This simple piece of paper paints a pretty good picture of you. So take advantage of this and make sure it paints the best picture possible.

Be honest. Don't give false information. Employers do follow through and check most of the information given on an application. Putting false information on an application is the quickest way to get your application placed in the inactive file.

Be prepared to fill out the following standard forms that are required by businesses when they hire employees before they start to work.

Work Permit

If you are under 18-years-of-age, your employer may be required, depending on which state you live in, to have a Work Permit on file before you begin to work. There are some exceptions to this rule for education related work experience. Check with your Career Prep Coordinator. You will be sent by the employer to your local high school to pick up a work permit and complete Part II (see below). You will give the Work Permit to your employer to complete and keep on file.

Once you enter employment, you are:

1. Volunteering to comply with income tax laws. 2. Agreeing to contribute to your tax liability on a pay-as-you-go basis. 3. Deciding how much money your employer should withhold from each paycheck.

Your employer uses the withholding information you provide on the W-4 forms to take money from your pay and send it to the state and federal governments in your name so that your taxes are paid. You will file an income tax return every year by April 15th to pay any additional money you owe or to receive any money you overpaid during the previous year.
