FACULTY ADVISOR
Name: Dr. S. Suresh
Designation: Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering Dept.
Qualification: Ph.D. (IIT Roorkee), M. E., B. Tech
Specialization: Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering
Area of Interest: Energy and Biochemical Engineering
PROBLEM
• The carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is increasing at an alarming rate.• The level has reached around 400 ppm as recent report by Dept. of Energy,2012 reveals.• Leading to global warming and further consequences.
STATISTICS
EXISTING SOLUTION Mineral sequestration Geological sequestration Ocean sequestration
MINERAL SEQUESTRATION
• Reaction of CO2 with Mg and Ca containing minerals to form carbonates.• Olivine (MgSiO4) and wollastonite (CaSiO3)
GEOLOGICAL SEQUESTRATION
• CO2 is injected into underground formations.
• Types of formations: Depleted oil fields Unmineable coal fields.
OCEANIC SEQUESTRATION
• Direct injection of CO2 in deep areas of ocean.
BIOLOGICAL SEQUESTRATION
• Micro-algae is used to capture CO2.
• Biomass so produced can be further processed and used.
LIQUID ABSORPTION TECHNIQUE
• Different ionic materials(olivine concrete, lithium aluminate) are used.• Optimization of result through Aspen Tech.
