1. Introduction

Ubuntu Research and Rural Development Company (Ubuntu RRDC) is a Zambian-based company that provides socio-economic research services. We provide high quality, scientifically-based socio-economic research data needed in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of policies, programs and projects that contribute to the economic and social development of Zambia’s (and Africa’s) rural areas. We seek to create new knowledge through applied socio-economic research. This new knowledge is intended to contribute to the removal of socio-economic hurdles that are constraining development, and to contribute to the creation of material and social wealth (and conversely, to contribute to the eradication of poverty).

The company also aims at developing innovate products and services that enable those at, or near, the bottom of the economic ladder to meaningfully participate in a nation’s economic affairs, thereby contributing to the economic growth of their communities and, cumulatively, the nation as a whole. This is done by running Ubuntu Research and Rural Development Company as an inclusive business that provides meaningful opportunities for the rural poor to participate in the company’s value-creation chain through knowledge-extension and outgrower schemes in carefully chosen products and services.

2. Human Resources and Experience

People are the most important resource for Ubuntu RRDC. Our strength is anchored in the individual

and collective expertise and experience of in-house and associated researchers and consultants. The

founders have a collective experience of over 50 years of work, and an individual average of 16 years.

They have backgrounds in business, agricultural economics and sociology. Ubuntu’s associate

consultants have backgrounds in economics, agriculture and statistics and they come from the academia

and private organizations.

2.1 Research and Consultancy Experience Ubuntu RRDC is a new firm, but its founders and staff have many years of experience of conducting

research and managing enterprises. The experience outlined here is largely drawn from the experiences

of Ubuntu staff in their earlier capacities.

3. Our Research and Analytical Capabilities

Staff at Ubuntu Research and Rural Development Company have been conducting socio-economic

research in Zambia and other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa for close to two decades. They know the

economic and social context of a greater part of Africa, and they know how to tap into the latent

development-oriented data embedded in Africa’s current socio-economic fabric, thereby helping to

unlock Africa’s development potential.

Figure 1: We go everywhere, in search of knowledge

3.1 Innovative, ICT-based

We use innovative data collection methods that improve efficiency and quality. We are experienced in

mobile data collection.

Page 25: CAPABILITY STATEMENT JANUARY 2017 · distribution through Shoprite stores, and some pharmacies. Shoprite started stocking Kit Yamoyo from January 2016. Activities performed: Design

23

3.2 Integration of survey research data with geographic information systems We have the capability to integrate survey research data with geographic information systems (GIS) for

better and more pinpointed design, planning and monitoring of development projects. GIS, used in

combination with survey data, for instance, gives greater analytical capability to a researcher.

Possibilities are many. The figure below shows the use of toilets in a rural Zambian community. Survey

data on toilet usage is overlain on Google earth using QGIS, giving the researcher possibilities to analyze

toilet usage in the context of other geographical features (housing population, surface water

(rivers/streams) forest density, nearness to a paved road, etc. Collection of geospatial data in socio-

economic surveys is made possible through the use of mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) with

GPS receivers.

3.3 Highly developed statistical and analytical abilities No matter how efficiently data is collected, if it is not properly or adequately analyzed, the data

collection effort is useless. At Ubuntu Research and Rural Development Company, we have highly

developed statistical and analytical capabilities that turn raw data into knowledge using various

statistical tools which include SPSS and STATA. We are also fully capable of carrying out qualitative

data analysis.
