Summer City Guide 2016 210 x 148mm.pdf 1 06/04/2016 14:59
Canterbury is at the heart of the Garden of England and in that corner of England that’s almost touchingFrance. With our world famous Cathedral, three universities and international visitors we have adistinctly cosmopolitan feel. People come here from across the globe for world-class heritage, forculture and festivals, to visit and to study, to shop, eat and hang out. It’s lively and fun.
But it’s also remarkably easy – in a moment – to step off the beaten track into some quiet oasis whereyou’ll hear nothing but birdsong, and the splash of oars on the narrow, gently flowing River Stour.
You may be in a city, but you get a strong sense of being in the Garden of England too. There areriverside gardens and even a cider-making orchard within the city itself.
And this year, Canterbury is a finalist in the Britain in Bloom campaign, so watch out for our judgesduring July and August!
Canterbury Christ Church University, situated just outside the city walls, has acampus, open to the public with somebeautiful small spaces, with plantingthemed around the St Augustines Abbeywhich occupied part of the site inMedieval times. A great place for asecluded ‘urban picnic’!
Canterbury Cathedral precinctssurround the stunning Cathedral and withan ancient herb garden and tranquilsecluded spaces it is a ‘must see’ foreveryone.
Whitefriars Shopping Centre would notbe everyone’s idea of a garden; however, with their superb floral pavilion, burgeoning hanging baskets, water clockdesigned by a local school, waterharvesting and bee hives on the roof it is aworld leading exponent of sustainability.(Great shopping too!)
Dane John Garden is a lovely open spacewith superb planting cheek by jowl withthe city centre, for a stroll, picnic or just tosit and enjoy the flowers.
Franciscan Gardens are the classic‘secret garden’ in the city. Open 10am –4pm most days and situated just off StourStreet it is an amazing hidden gem. Tell no-one and enjoy!
Westgate Gardens next to Canterbury’sfamous Westgate welcome the River Stourinto the heart of the city. Walk throughthe formal planting and out along theStour Footpath towards Chartham torealise how close the city is to the Kentcountryside.
The River Stour passes through ourancient city in two branches so don’t besurprised if it keeps ‘popping up’ as youstroll through the quieter streets; enjoy aboat trip and see the city from an entirelynew perspective or seek out SollysOrchard, Abbots Mill and the GreyfriarsGardens to enjoy the city and its river in anew way.
Canterbury in Bloom is a partnership oflocal organisations and businessesworking together to make Canterbury acleaner and greener city for all.
Here is your guide to ourbeautiful garden cityCanterbury
If you live in the city and want to get involved in preparation for the Bloom judgesvisits (20th July & 3rd August), here are some ideas:• Put up a hanging basket or plant up a plant pot or window box• Give your front garden a spruce up• Arrange a litter pick with your neighbours• Adopt a publicflower bed - but don’t forget to ask the council for permissionfirst!
