Printing Speed Versus ColorThe BJC-5100 Series Printer Driver for Windows can interpret andtranslate the full spectrum of colors, up to 16.7 million colors. Whenprint ing in color, there is a significant increase in th e amou nt ofinform ation that the driver has to interpret and translate. When pr intingwith black ink on ly, the dr iver has only one color to interpr et.

By decreasing the amou nt of colors that the pr inter driver has tointerpret, you can significantly decrease the tim e needed to t ranslatethe inform ation. This will speed up the overall printing process.

r If the print density of your page is very high, light paper stock m aycurl slightly due to the large amoun t of ink. If you need to printdense graphics, try prin ting on heavier stock.

r Do n ot u se thicker paper t han meets the specifications for thisprinter. (See Append ix A, Specifications, for details.) Printin g with apaper that is thick enou gh to come in contact with the print headnozzles may damage the BJ cartridges.

You m ay need to replace a BJ cartridge or a BJ tank when either of theseconditions exists:

r You h ave been using the cartr idge for m ore than six mon ths.

r Your p rinted ou tpu t is not cr isp and clear, and th ere are gaps in thecharacters (m issing dot s) even after you have aligned the p rint headand perform ed pr int head cleaning several times.

If you are u sing the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge and either your color orblack output is blank, one of the BJ tanks is probably out of ink. See theinstructions starting on page 4-16 for replacing a BJ tank.

NCano n has m ore engineers dedicated to creating quality ink for providing

the best results for output on Bubble Jet printers than any otherorganizat ion. Canon does not prohibit the use of thi rd-par ty inks and theuse of third-party inks do es not invalidate the prod ucts limited warran ty.However, Canon cannot guarantee the quali ty or p erform ance of yourprinter when you are using inks from other supp liers.

Canons limited warranty does not cover damage caused to CanonsBubble Jet products that is attribu table to the use of third-p arty parts orsupplies, including inks. The limited warrant y rem ains in effect for itslife once that p articular dam age has been p roperly repaired.

For optimu m printing results, Canon recomm ends that you u se CanonBJ cart ridges and BJ tan ks.

BJ Cartridge and BJ Tank M aint enance

The most imp ortant th ing you can do to extend the life of your p rinterand to en sure optimu m p rint qu ality is to take care of the BJ cartridges.

CSpilled ink can stain any surface. Open BJ cartridges and BJ tankscarefully, and follow the guidelines presented h ere to protect againstspilled in k.

r Make sure you store any cartridge not being used in the InkCar tr idge Storage Box.

r Keep BJ cartridges and BJ tanks in their sealed containers until youare ready to use them .

r Do not remove the BJ tanks from the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridgeun necessarily. This m ay cause the in k to clog.

r Make sure both BJ tanks are installed in the BC-21e ColorBJ Cartridge. Attemp ting to u se the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge

with one BJ tank only may cause ink clogging.

r If spilled, the ink is difficult to remove. Therefore, its a good idea tokeep the BJ cartridges and BJ tanks out of the reach of children.

r Do not to uch the prin t head area on the BJ cartridge. Ink may leakout an d cause stains.

CHold th e BJ cartr idge on the sides only. Do n ot tou ch the silver plate onthe bottom of the BJ cartridge or the silver metal or circuit area on th eside. The metal area may become hot dur ing print ing.

    Replacing a BJ Cartridge

The following procedure describes how to replace the BC-21e Color
