When the history of CPAA is being written the year 2007 will undeniably be

considered as a landmark year. It was this year that several of our earliest

aspirations and goals became a reality.

We had always aspired for CPAA to be self-sustaining i.e. to be able to stand on

the strength of its activities, transparency, efficiency and integrity rather than

have a separate unit to organize charity events to raise funds for the society’s upkeep. We had always

hoped that one day our organization would be recognized as one of the best charities in the country

and that the donors will select us on the basis of our work in the various areas of Total Management

of Cancer. As a result of our relentless efforts, in 2007, we received an overwhelming response from

several donors who themselves approached us with a desire to donate funds towards our projects.

This is indeed something to rejoice about.

Similar to any other corporation the financially viability of an NGO is the most important factor that

foretells its sustenance - another objective that we had always aimed for. Foremost in this regard was

to be able to keep the administrative expenses to below 5% of the total expenditure. With the help of

our appropriate financial planning, in 2007, we were able to reduce the percentage to as low as 3.5%,

perhaps the lowest amongst any NGOs in the country.

Another aspiration that we set out with was to be recognized as one of the premier NGOs working in

the field of cancer management, nationally as well as internationally. Some of the below mentioned

incidents of 2007 indicate that CPAA has started to make a mark in that direction already.

Our victory in getting the price of an anti-cancer drug, useful for the treatment of leukemia

and manufactured by one of the largest multinational pharmaceutical giants, reduced from

Rs. 2.5 lacs to just Rs. 10,000 got us international acclaim for saving the lives of thousands

of cancer patients in India as well as 80 other underdeveloped and developing nations. This

long drawn battle of over 3 years entailed numerous protests, petitions, legal wrangles that

even took us to the doors of the Supreme Court of India.

10 members of our staff were invited to various international conferences, symposia and for

fellowship programs to represent CPAA with respect to their line of work.

A CPAA office bearer was appointed by UICC (International Union Against Cancer) to be one

of the judges for their selection process of APCASOT (Asia-Pacific Cancer Society Training

Grants) scholars for their fellowship program.

UICC appointed a CPAA office bearer as a selector of abstracts for the UICC annual

conference 2008 to be held in Geneva.

CPAA has been deputed to be the host for an international conference on Cervical Cancer to

be held in Mumbai in 2008.

I think its now time for all of us, particularly the members of the younger generation to take up newer

challenges for CPAA and work towards making it the world’s largest and most effective NGO in the

field of Cancer Control.

World No Tobacco Day: Smoke Free Environment Free Cancer Awareness and Screening (ENT) Camps were held at key locations in Mumbai - BEST (Wadala), Dadar Railway Station for railway loaders and track workers, Naigaon Police Headquarters for the policemen and their families and the Police Club for Police officers. The Commissioner of Mumbai Police D. N. Jadhav along with Joint Commissioner S. Awate and actor Jackie Shroff at the Mumbai Police Club inaugurated the Police camp. An open house cancer screening (ENT) camp was held at the Hutatma Chowk car parking lot on 31 May 2007- World

No Tobacco Day for the general public. Over 1000 people were screened at these camps out of which 49% were advised follow up screening at our clinics. In line with the World No Tobacco Day theme, ‘Smoke Free Environment’, over a 100 city kids participated in a drawing competition on the same topic. The event was co-hosted by Lotus Suites Ecotel, Mumbai. The children painted the canvases with beautiful and eclectic colours portraying their ideas of a Smoke-free Environment, based on varied topic like global warming, tobacco, smoking etc. Renowned artists Hema Joshi, Ruxana Pathan and C. S. Oza judged the paintings for ingenuity and creativity, while actress Sonali Kulkarni and Nitu Chandra encouraged and cheered the kids. As a part of the World No Tobacco Day celebrations, Director Neeta More was invited to speak on the popular talk show ‘Hello Sakhi’ on Doordarshan's Sahyadri channel to speak on 'Tobacco Free Campaigns'.

National Cancer Rose Day : Hobby Ideas, India's first Craft & Hobby store, played hosted to 50 young patients as a part of our Rose Day celebrations. The children participated in craft and clay modeling workshops. Actresses Mallika Sherawat and Tara Sharma joined in the festivities too. Patients were taken to visit the famous and most visited Ganpati Idol of Mumbai - 'Lal baug- cha Raja' along-with their families and volunteers during the 10 day long Ganpati

festival. It was a unique opportunity for these children, since it typically takes 12-18 hours in queue before the general public can get ‘darshan’. An orchestra program was organised at Mohan Dayal Sanatorium for all the patients and relatives. Former Miss World - Diana Hayden graced the occasion and spent time with the patients. She then launched a booklet – ‘Leukemia par Amit Ki Jeet’ - a colouring book explaining cancer treatment in a manner easily understood by children.

Message from Vinaya Chacko, Head of the department, Patient Care

As we look into the future and see incidents of cancer on the rise, our main aim is to become self-

sufficient by increasing the in-flow of donations. While we continue to help patients suffering from

Breast Cancer in totality (Surgery Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy), the patients suffering from

Leukemia are also given complete help under the ‘Adopt a patient scheme’. Another major focus would

be the counseling cells, which we are planning to start in various government and private hospitals.

Our social workers are being trained by a counseling psychologist not only to be well versed in the

information about the disease but to also train other volunteers in these skills. We are also tapping

new donors to be able to meet our requirements for ration and food grains for our registered patients.

We plan to lay more emphasis in the future on our support groups as well as rehabilitating our

patients by finding jobs for them.

We lost our dear friend Jenny due to Breast Cancer, this year. She was an “Angel in Disguise “always

helping people in need. We pray to the Almighty that he may grant her eternal rest and peace. Her

loss will be always felt in the department.

Message from Manju Gupta, Executive Director, Rehabilitation

My dream for the Rehabilitation Center is to keep it healthy and prosperous. I say Healthy, because in order to survive to a ripe old age, an outfit should be of sound health.

The Rehabilitation Center is very prone to viral diseases like unrest, dissatisfaction, revolt and non-obedience. These virals infect us from time to time, and have to be weeded out very tactfully and the unit has to be restored back to good health where one is for all, and all is for one.

The second part of my dream is to keep the Rehabilitation Center Prosperous because money can work wonders – it can treat people of cancer, provide basic amenities to very needy people, it can bring hope and happiness and relief to all and it allows one to grow, quantitatively and qualitatively.

During the past years, we have always reported a steady pace of progress in our Rehabilitation Center and my dream is that we continue with this trend.

Day to day correspondence and maintenance of the website: We receive approximately 7-8 emails every day, seeking information of various kinds. These must be replied to in a timely manner. Readers are always pleasantly surprised when they get a response so quickly and that has helped us project a positive image.

Support to other departments Earlier, we used to give awareness lectures on an overhead projector and then using a slide projector. Today, we use Powerpoint presentations on laptops and LCD projectors. The first time this innovation was used was at our annual review and was introduced by the New Projects department. We send out anti gutka stickers, information on Breast self examination, chemotherapy and radiation, advertisements, posters to people all over India and abroad. We have created several information booklets too. We have helped organise early detection camps and clinics in response to requests over the Internet. Insurance policy enquiries are forwarded. Patients write asking for second opinions. We have identified and tied up with the best doctors who respond and provide information. We have networked with doctors, NGOs and individuals who can help patients all over India. We have helped families raise huge amounts of funds for the treatment of their relatives. We have sold breast prostheses to patients.

Organisation of conferences

The New Projects department was intimately involved in the organisation of the ICCCPO and Reach to Recovery conference held in Mumbai in 2007.

International Participation

The New Projects department participated in ICCCPO conferences in Indonesia and Mumbai.

A member of the New Projects team was also awarded the UICC Asia-Pacific Cancer Society Training Grant (APCASOT), a program for staff or accredited volunteers

of voluntary cancer societies located in the Asia-Pacific region, for a project on 'Fundraising Strategies' and was sent to Queensland Cancer Fund, Brisbane, Australia for the same.

Message from Shubha Maudgal, Executive Director, New Projects

The New Projects department was started in 1999 with the aim of exploring newer options in cancer

management in keeping with current times. We have tried to challenge the existing way of doing

things and discover newer and hopefully better ways. It has been our endeavour to support each of

CPAA's departments' activities in a positive manner. We have helped give CPAA a more professional

image.

The most important contribution has been the website which started out as just a brochure on

CPAA. Today it is a vibrant, constantly changing entity, which is the window between CPAA and the

outside world. We have used it to present our work to people all over the world and the most

amazing responses have come to us through its medium.

Fund Raising The 5th Mumbai Standard Chartered Marathon 2007 was hailed as a huge success this year thanks to all the people who took part in it! This marathon that started about 5 years ago has become a chance for NGOs to raise awareness about their cause and generate funds. CPAA has been receiving funds from generous donors who run for our cause. This year we decided to take an active part by fielding a team of our own as a part of Pledgers' United, where individuals chose to run for a cause of their choice. They could then raise money for the cause by asking supporters to pledge funds for their participation. CPAA got the support of many corporates in cash and kind alike. We received 274 individual registrations. We were represented in each category of the race-the full marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km) and the Dream Run (6 km). On 21 January 2007, there was a sea of pink as the CPAA team assembled for the Dream Run at 8 am. About Rs. 25 lakhs was raised, through donations from AV Group, LIC, Citibank, Mr. Hital Meswani, our very own Padma Narayan and more.

Colours of life all came alive as art lovers all over the city came in large numbers to Cancer Patients Aid Association's Annual Art Exhibition. This year's collection 'Thumbprints in Time' boasted of participation from over a 100 senior Indian Artists from all over India and overseas, who donated their works to help raise funds for the treatment of childhood cancer patients. The uniqueness of this year's exhibition was the contribution of 20 senior Bengal school artists who are otherwise rarely seen in Mumbai. The beautiful creations of these artists and their unstinting support made it possible for us to reach out to many more children than would otherwise have been possible.

DDeellhhii BBrraanncchh Awareness Programs: This year we were successful in organizing several awareness camps and lectures not only in leading corporate companies like but also in the underprivileged areas of Delhi and NCR. Some of the key cancer awareness programs organized this year were:

Cancer Awareness program for IIT students at their campus on the 26 February 2007. Dr. H.K. Chaturvedi gave the presentation to the students.

‘Anti Tobacco Awareness’ campaign on World No Tobacco Day at Janpath market. This was in response to a call from the Market Association to create awareness amongst their employees’. Posters were pu up at all strategic points in the market. Our team went around to all the shops and personally spoke to the salesmen against the hazards of tobacco.

‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ program on 13 & 14 December 2007 for 200 female employees of Airtel. Dr. Puneet Gupta from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals addressed the group on various informative topics on breast cancer.

An interactive session for the staff & students of Gargi College on the topic ‘Is our lifestyle related to our risks of cancer’. CPAA received an overwhelming response from over 250 participants for this discussion. Another such forum was held at the Apeejay School on the topic ‘Hazards of Tobacco in all its form’. Students from classes X - XII actively participated in the program. Dr. Chaturvedi conducted the discussion for CPAA.

50 health & detection camps were organized in the Delhi and NCR areas of Lal Kuan, chungi no.2, Sangam vihar, Ambedkar nagar, Dakshinpuri, Neb Sarai and Lado Sarai. 2587 healthy individuals were screened in the camps. 13 suspected cases of cancer were found during the camps, of which 3 got confirmed.

Patient Care: This year, we were able to adopt a large number of cancer patients and there was an overall improvement in the quality and extent of cancer care provided to a larger number of patients & their families. All of these endeavors towards patient care activities were duly appreciated at AIIMS Delhi. CPAA’s Play Room center at AIIMS too received lot of praise from the doctors and an overwhelming response from the children in the pediatric ward. This year we plan to add more information based programs/workshops for patients and their family members, arts-crafts workshops, reading and learning programs for the children. Moreover, we also plan to encourage these children to participate in our cultural programs, which are organized during festival times.

Message from Kiran Hukku, Director, North Zone

2007 has been an outstanding year for us due to the collective efforts and focused determination of

our small but competent team. As targeted this year we have been able to initiate the set up of an

independent Detection & Education center in collaboration with Global Charity, USA and have already

made headway into this project. We were able to take our awareness programs and anti-tobacco

messages to a maximum number of companies, schools, colleges and underprivileged areas in many

years. We also successfully completed the detections camps as committed to Ministry of Health and

World Health Organisation. In recognition of our work, AIIMS Delhi invited us to participate in their

patient care celebrations and festivities. Due to this, we were able to network with many eminent

people who can give our work the much-required impetus. This year we plan to form a ‘think tank’ of

all the celebrities associated with CPAA to give us their valuable input & ideas for all our future

projects.

The year 2008 begins with newer challenges and targets. We are confident and hopeful that once

again we shall come out with flying colors. We are very thankful to the Head Office at Mumbai for

lending their timely support to us from, which has helped us come this far.

DDeellhhii BBrraanncchh So far our counseling facility have been limited to AIIMS Hospital where our dedicated team ensures that correct information and timely help is given to needy cancer patients. We now plan to expand these services to Batra, Dharamshila and Apollo Hospitals. We also plan to gradually extend the services to cancer care and support and to connect hospitals with schools to enable better awareness as well as sensitize school children towards the plight of poor cancer patients. With this we expect more contribution coming in from these children towards the Kind Bank and other events. HIGHLIGHTS OF 2007
