THE DANCE EXPERIENCE
L’EXPÉRIENCE DE DANSE
Experiencing contempo-rary dance is an adven-ture. There is no formulafor finding meaning in it.The key for understand-ing lies in the dancing –without dancing thereain’t no dance! When we go to see a con-temporary dance event orany other contemporaryarts event, we are taking ahuge risk. We don’t knowwhat we are going to see. We maybe used to the values of the enter-tainment industry that seem topacify us with easy answers. Wemay not want to participate in anartistic event due to feelings of inad-equacy, insecurity and a perceivedlack of understanding. By its verynature, contemporary art seeks toquestion. In the process of ques-tioning, our own value system maybe judged, making us feel uncom-fortable. All of us have experiencedthese feelings at one time or anotherwhen viewing a dance performance.
We have come here to participatein this event and we all want to findmeaning in it. Each of us bringsknowledge and life experience thatprovide our collective with a won-derful sense of diversity. We are notthe same, but we share experiencesof the basic human emotions. Wehave the right to participate and, asequals, share an active role in con-structing meaning. By coming tothe event, viewers actually completethe artwork that has been created tocommunicate or interact with theaudience. Our reactions may be
very personal and emotional. Wemay find that because of new expe-riences and acquired knowledge, our sense of meaning may change.
Dance is a particularly fluid artform. It doesn’t exist without itbeing actively danced. As a result, dance cannot be fixed to a specificviewpoint, time, or place. Just likethe audience member watching thedance, the dancers are not the samepeople they were yesterday. Thedance changes every time it is per-formed. A dance then may have lay-ers of meaning or multiple mean-ings, and we have the right to inter-pret the dance as we see it. On theother hand, we also have theresponsibility to see what we arelooking at and to perhaps not judgeit too quickly. Movement in spaceand time creates an energy thatengages us on a physical level andbrings us into the dance when weallow ourselves to be open to it.
It is important for a dialogue to becreated between the dance beingperformed and the viewer watchingit. Dialogue encourages specula-tion. By bringing our experiences, knowledge, and values to the dia-logue, we find meanings the artistmay not have considered.Questions may arise in the conversa-tion. By acknowledging them, werecognize that in our democracy, weare all equals. We may find that weare bewildered by a dance, but if wedescribe what we have seen, webegin to find meaning. Since thedance is completed only when it isperformed for an audience, all of us– the choreographer, the dancers, the audience – will find a rich expe-rience knowing that as necessaryequals in this meaning-makingprocess, we are all vulnerable and at

Choreographer’s Note
As a choreographer, John Ottmann isinterested in the ephemeral nature oflanguage; verbal, physical andotherwise; the challenges inherent incommunication, understanding thatessentially everyone possesses anindividual dialect of sorts. His work isinfluenced by a fascination withphysical syntax: both the abstract anddeeply personal.

Choreographer’s Notes
I am continuously fascinated by thenuances of a moment and the multiplecomplexities and interpretations thateach instance inspires. I tend to seethe bizarre in many situations andtwist the most common aspects ofeveryday life into unpredictablecircumstances. Humour has alwaysbeen a vibrant essence of my familylife. Growing up we rarely allowed amoment to pass without reinterpretingit’s meaning and filling the walls ofour home with laughter. The joy ofour common language of absurditybecame the norm.
During the past decade of makingdances and until recently, I delvedinto the darker fabric of humanity.Asylum of Spoons has taken me in anew direction creatively. I have begunto integrate humour, such a vital partof my everyday life, into my work.Through this process, I am findingmore intimacy with this aspect of mychildhood that has enriched mybeing.
It is the dancers who are perform-ing this evening that have inspiredme and supported my creative proj-ects over many hours, weeks, monthsand years. I cherish them as individu-als and as superb interpreters. I thankthem for all that they give.

About Dancing Americas
A stunning dance creation conceivedby artistic director Sandra Larondeand choreographed by Peter Chin,Dancing Americas is set to original, live music by world famous com-poser Antonio Zepeda, celebrated forhis revival of Mesoamerican and pre-Colombian indigenous music fromMexico.
Dancing Americas explores therelationships of the First Peoples ofthe Americas through the metaphorof the monarch butterfly that lives insouth central Canada and migratesannually to Mexico. The piece drawson the possibilities of exchange alongpre-contact trade routes. Themonarch is an inspired metaphor formigration, generation, metamorpho-sis and beauty. Four performers fromCanada and four performers fromMexico combine forces to create andshape this contemporary stage phe-nomenon.
In addition to Dancing Americas, there is a 15-minute Grass Dance solo, choreographed and performed byMatthew Pheasant. Emulating a tradi-tion that is centuries old, this tradi-tional dance form displays theAboriginal aesthetic, ethos and cul-tural pride of this land. Grass Dance isone of the oldest dance forms and thepredominant style of men's dance inPow-Wow. Men are called upon toprepare the grounds where feastsand special events are to take place. The men bless the grounds whiledancing in time with the beat of adrum, flattening the prairie grasswith their feet. Grass Dancersattempt to imitate nature, resemblingthe gentle swaying of grass on awindy day, and must display balance, endurance, coordination and grace-fulness.

The resonance of the world we wakeup to everyday is a great humanadventure. We laugh, we cry, welove and we dream. We celebrate.
Pathways to Hopak is a journey ofdiscovery. This journey guides itstravelers through life’s universal cycleof birth, youthful playfulness, searchfor love, mortal struggles, and ulti-mately, celebration of a “life worthliving”. It explores the tragedy ofworld conflict and mourns it in aRequiem. It explores the metaphori-cal village festive dance, Kolomeyka,a part of Canada’s everyday expres-sion of Hopak, and its connection tothe celebration of life.
A child is born into a field ofdreams, takes its first awkward steps, and swiftly transforms into the care-free abandon of youth. A worldawash with color and music, pro-pelled by boundless energy, brings asheer joy to being alive. But what isjoy if you don’t have someone specialwith whom to share it in a suspendedmoment of love and stillness?
Eternal love is balanced byhumankind’s unexplainable reoccur-ring descent into the darkness of con-flict. The conflict is faceless and itsend, century after century, is pro-found loss. As humankind, weacknowledge this loss and mourn itwith the deepest expressions of therequiems of generation after genera-tion. Left in a state of vulnerability, yet with a human instinct for survival,we wait for the world to wash cleanour battlefields. The cycle renews:children are born; they take their firststeps. There is a life worth living. Wecelebrate it through the gift of Hopak.
Gordon Gordey, Artistic Director

chrys-a-lis n. the form which somebutterflies, moths and other insectsassume when they change from thestate of larva and before they arrive attheir winged or perfect state.
Chrysalis had a unique evolution dueto the nature of its source material – a‘doll’-making workshop led by Torontovisual artist Lois Schklar – that thedancers, designers and choreographerparticipated in prior to the creation ofthe dance. The focused creativity ofthis workshop unleashed the energythat metamorphosed into the danceyou see before you. Chrysalis premieredat the Vancouver East Cultural Centrein May 2000.

Zab Maboungou
Rhythm is music, as Zab Maboungouexplores a place for words that onlythe body can establish. “To create achoreography,” she says, “is not anact of writing, but one of configura-tion within a precise and fluid meas-urement of time.” In this context, where dance uses movement to marktime, NSAMU establishes the place -the topography - where actions andwords are inextricably linked. InKikongo, the language of the twoCongos, NSAMU means the subjectof the debate. The symbolism inNsamu is also rhythmic. It juxtaposesgestures, sounds and steps and out-lines a possible path: one that leadsfrom movement to dialogue.
“Speaking and telling are two differ-ent things. Both actions take place ina discrete period of time, dependingnot only on our abilities, but also onthe fragile nature of our being. Whatcan we say then, that time will holdback (Nsamu)? If nothing can be saidin the variable, or improbableinstance of which we are speaking, perhaps dance can propose a move-ment fit to precede, announce orbring out the unformulated words(Topo).»
