There are over 40 million vehicles currently equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), and today all new vehicles sold in the US are required to have this system. TPMS equipped vehicles require special tools to perform routine tire rotation/replacement and related services. Specifically, a tool kit that provides the capability to test wheel sensors and “reset” the TPMS are required.

The OTC TPMS Kit is the Total Solution The OTC Tire Pressure Monitor Tool Kit is a complete universal kit providing the tools and information necessary to test wheel sensors and reset TPMS. The Tire Pressure Monitor tool features easy menus, graphics, and directions that help to guide you. The software has the options to Auto Scan or Diagnostics to analyze the wheel sensors. A complete Reset Procedure is also included in the software to walk the user through the complete process. The manual contains the critical reset procedure references along with all the system information including torque specifications. Using the TPM tool in conjunction with the reset manual provides the essential combination for servicing TPMS. The TPM Tool’s main function is to activate the tire sensors in a Direct TPMS. There are a couple different situations that sensors require activation, and in most cases, reading the transmitted data. These are covered in the TPM Tool software under the following features:

Diagnostics The Diagnostic feature allows for quick check of sensor via the Make-Year-Model entry system. Selection of the specific vehicle eliminates the search time of proper protocol. Transmitted sensor information is displayed when available.

Like the Auto Scan feature, this is a powerful feature that allows the technician to validate that all the sensors are functional before any work is started on the wheels/tires.

Auto Scan The Auto Scan features provides the capability to walk up to any TPM equipped vehicle and activate the sensor with the push of a button. This function searches through all the communication protocols until the sensor is activated. After activation, the sensor transmits information which is displayed on the screen.

Kit covers both Direct and Indirect TPMS systems.

Reset Procedure The Reset Procedure is the key function that “resets” or “relearns” the tire locations and will turn off the dash light. This function is accessed via the vehicle entry and graphically walks the user through all the necessary steps to complete the reset procedure. This software feature contains references to the reset manuals supplied with the tool.

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Fob TestThe Remote Keyless Entry feature allows for the testing of RF transmitting devices such as RKE fobs, garage door openers, and tire sensors. In this mode, the screen displays the signal strength and “Fob Detected” is prompted. This feature is perfect for determining signal strength representing battery status of RF devices.

Reset ManualThe Reset Manual is a key part of the reset procedure in that it provides the instruction to put the vehicle in “Learn Mode”, which is a required step in a typical reset procedure. Without this instruction, the technician cannot effectively reset the system, thus the importance of having this information readily available.

The Quick Reference manual covers both Direct and Indirect systems and contains the following topics:

TPMS Description »Reset Requirements »Torque Specifications »Reset Procedures »

The Quick Reference manual provides the key information for placing the vehicle in Learn Mode and completing the Reset Procedure. 20 TPMS Reset Procedures Quick Reference Guide

The TPM system uses a wireless network to monitor tire pressures. Each wheel/tire assembly is equipped with a radio frequency (RF) transmitting pressure sensor. These sensors deliver tire pressure readings to the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR).

When the vehicle is stationary for more than 15 minutes, the sensors go into stationary mode. In this mode the sensors check the pressure in each tire every 30 seconds and transmit if there is a change in pressure. As vehicle speed increases above 32 km/h (20 mph) centrifugal force activates the sensors internal accelerometer, placing the sensor into drive mode. In this mode the sensors transmit once every 60 seconds.

The RCDLR translates the information within the sensors RF transmission into sensor presence, sensor mode and tire pressure. The RCDLR sends the translated tire pressure information to the driver information center (DIC) via the serial data circuit. The DIC provides the display interface where tire pressures and their locations may be viewed.

When the TPM system detects a significantly under- or over-inflated tire; the CHECK TIRE PRESSURE warning message displays on the DIC, the low tire pressure indicator will illuminate on the instrument panel cluster (IPC), and individual tire pressures display.

Adjusting existing tire pressure condition(s) to the recommended kPa/psi can clear all warning indicators.

The sensor's pressure accuracy from -10 to +70° C (+14 to +158° F) is plus or minus 13.7 kPa.

The RCDLR also detects malfunctions within the TPM system and displays the SERVICE TIRE MONITOR message on the DIC.

Learn ProcedureNOTE: Make sure the TPMS option is enabled in the RCDLR and make sure no other TPMS tire pressure adjustments or TPMS resets are being done nearby.1 If using a standard ignition switch, place the

switch in the RUN position. If using an electronic keyless ignition switch, place the switch in the ACCY position.

2 To initiate the sensor learn mode, either use a scan tool or simultaneously press the lock and unlock buttons on the keyless entry transmitter. A horn chirp will sound indicating that the sensor learn mode has been enabled.

NOTE: The learn mode automatically disables after 5 minutes (or after 2 minutes of inactivity). If disabled before learning any sensors, all previous sensor IDs and locations remain stored in the PDM.3 At the left front tire, do the following:

• Hold the antenna of the OTC TPM tool against the tire sidewall close to the wheel rim at the valve stem location and then press and release the Reset Procedure Start button and wait for a horn chirp.

• Increase/decrease the tire pressure for 8 to 10 seconds and then wait for a horn chirp.

NOTE: If the horn does not chirp after 35 seconds, turn the ignition OFF and restart the Procedure.4 Repeat step 3 for the remaining sensors in the

order: right front, right rear, left rear. 5 After the left rear ID is learned, a double horn

chirp sounds to indicate that all sensor IDs are learned. Turn the ignition OFF to exit the learn mode.

6 Adjust the tires to recommended pressures.

Last Saved Data and PrintingLast Saved is available once the Auto Scan or Diagnostics feature has activated a sensor and the received information was saved. Selecting Save from the Activation screen saves the sensor information and allows the current date to be entered. The sensor information, date and vehicle application are all saved under the Last Saved function. From this location the saved data can be printed via the optional printer.

This printout can then be shared with the customer in cases one or more of the sensors are not functional. This provides improved customer satisfaction and limits service liability.

Tire Pressure Reset Tool for NissanThis tool is designed to extinguish the Tire Pressure Warning Light on 2003 and newer Nissan vehicles with TPM Reset Connector. The connector end of the cable mates to the vehicle connector found behind the DLC connector under the dash. The alligator clip is clipped onto the metal bracket that holds the DLC connector. Once connected and the ignition is turned on, the tool trigger is pressed 5 times within 10 seconds causing the warning light to start flashing. With the tool disconnected, the vehicle can be started and driven over 30 mph until the light stops flashing, which completes the procedure. Graphic step-by-step instruction sheet and application chart included in the kit.
