ILY HAPPENINGS

September Preparedness Month - Tip #3: Meet the Zeer Pot

In an extended power outage, prepared foods and medications such as insulin and liquid antibiotics will spoil or become less effective without refrigeration. Other items, such as uncooked eggs and vegetables, last longer with colder temperatures. The recommended storage temperature of packaged food and medication is usually printed on the box or label. One way to potentially extend the life of heat sensitive items is to build a simple evaporative cooler that can lower air temperatures by 25-35% in a low humidity environment. A Zeer pot system works by removing heat from items as water evaporates not unlike holding a wet finger to the wind. Built using a larger clay pot and a smaller clay pot, sand fills the space between the two and water is typically added twice per day. A thermometer placed inside can monitor temps as they slowly decrease; using a lid or wet cloth will help keep temperatures down. Keep out of the sun and in an area exposed to air movement. A commercial option for storing insulin & insulin pens in an emergency: www.FrioInsulinCoolingCase.com .

WORSHIP / THE GOOD W

ORD

Jesus told his disciples this parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o'clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.' So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o'clock, and did likewise. Going out about fi ve o'clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' They answered, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard.' When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the fi rst.' When those who had started about fi ve o'clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the fi rst came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, 'These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat.' He said to one of them in reply, 'My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?' Thus, the last will be fi rst, and the fi rst will be last."

Men’s Reading GroupTuesday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Room. At our next meeting, we will be discussing: A Gentleman in Moscow: A Novel, by Amor Towles. In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

Women’s Reading GroupTuesday, October 3, 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Rm. Even if you haven’t read the book, join us for wine, snacks, and lively exchange on Richard Rohr’s Falling Upwards. He shows that those who have fallen or failed are the only ones who understand "up." We think of the second half of life as largely about getting old but he shows why getting older is by far the best and most spiritual time of life.

Kindred SpiritsParish life can be strongly marriage and family oriented with few opportunities for single adults to feel comfortable at social gatherings or in volunteer capacities. Kindred Spirits was formed to create comfortable ways for single adults over 40 to get to know each other, and to build supportive friendships that enhance their participation in parish life as well as create meaningful connections in their lives outside of church. Truly great friendships have evolved through sharing in social events, volunteer projects, and spiritual enrichment activities together. We attend the Saturday vigil Mass each fi rst Saturday, followed by going to a diff erent local restaurant. Other potential activities are discussed and plans made during these fi rst Saturday gatherings. If you would like additional information, please email [email protected].

Children’s Spanish and Bilingual Books

Available in the Bookstore We have been trying to increase our collection of Spanish and bilingual books. Our carefully curated selection of books has grown to 2 shelves in the Children’s Book Section. Here are just a few. This prayer book, updated to conform to The Roman Missal, Third Edition, pro-

vides English and Spanish texts for prayers commonly used by children. It

includes the Our Father, Hail Mary, Apos-tles’ Creed, the Ten Commandments, as well as prayers for confession, the Sta-

tions of the Cross, and the Rosary.

This Bible story book is in the very popular board book format.

Appealing, accessible illustrations help to tell favorite Bible stories from

the Old and New Testament. As patroness of the Americas, there is no doubt that Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most recognized figures in

the spiritual consciousness of Hispan-ics and non-Hispanics alike. Our

Lady’s apparitions to St. Juan Diego continues to be the strongest root of Catholicism in Latin America, as the devotions continues to be passed

down to younger generations. This booklet explores the rich history in an easy bilingual format for children, with a guide for grown-ups to help present

the story to children.

Parents and children can deepen their understanding of the Bible by reading bible

stories together. A collaboration of the American Bible Society and Scholastic

Books, this book includes “Parent Pages” that enhance the discussion of the Bible

between parent and child. Stories from the Old and New Testament

are accompanied by vivid illustrations.

NEW IN THE BOOKSTORE Beginning September 1, the we started offering a “Customer Loyalty Card”. For each purchase made the card will be punched in $5.00 increments. When the card is completely punched you can redeem it for a $20.00 store credit toward a purchase of $20.00 or more. We have the cards at the check-out desk, but if you don’t see them be sure to ask, and bring the card with you every time you shop.
